The Phils took a quick 3-0 lead in the first as, with runners on the corners, and with one man out, Chase Utley hits a three-run shot to left, his fifth home run of the year, knocking in Jimmy Rollins, who had lead-off the inning with a double, then stole third base as Shane Victorino walked, and Victorino, who had just walked. The Padres would cut the Phils’ lead in the sixth as, with one man on, and with nobody out, Cameron Maybin hits a two-run home run, his sixth home run of the year, knocking in Mat Latos, who had earlier singled, cutting the Phils’ lead down to 3-2. Two batters later, now with one man out, the Padres tied the game up at three-all as Chase Headley hits a solo home run, his third home run of the season. The Padres then took the lead in the seventh as, with a man on third, and with two men out, Maybin hits an RBI single, scoring Logan Forsythe, who had earlier tripled, giving the Padres a 4-3 lead. The Phils tied the game up at four-all in their half of the seventh as, on one pitch, pinch hitter Ryan Howard hits a solo pinch hit home run, his nineteenth home run of the season. Three batters later, with two men on, and with still nobody out, Michael Martinez hits a three-run home run of his own, his second home run of the season, knocking in pinch runner Wilson Valdez, who was running for pinch hitter Ross Gload, who had got on base with a pinch hit double, then went to third on Chad Qualls’ wild pitch, and Rollins, who had just walked, then went to second on Qualls’ wild pitch, after Martinez had earlier missed on two bunt attempts, giving the Phils a 7-4 lead. Two batters later, now with one man out, Utley hits a solo home run, his sixth home run of the year, and his second home run of the game, giving the Phils an 8-4 lead. The Padres tried to come back in the eighth as, with the bases loaded, via singles by Ryan Ludwick and Chris Denorfia, with Ludwick stopping at second base, and a walk to Forsythe, moving both runners up a base, and with two men out, Antonio Bastardo threw a wild pitch, allowing Ludwick to score, cutting the Phils’ lead down to 8-5, while allowing Denorfia to reach third base, and Forsythe to move up to second base. Two batters later, after Rob Johnson has walked, reloading the bases, the Padres made it an 8-6 Phils’ lead, as pinch hitter Kyle Phillips walked, forcing in Denorfia, while Forsythe and Johnson both moved up a base. The Phils then got out of the inning as, after Phillips was replaced at first base by pinch runner Cory Luebke, Maybin hit into a 1-3 ground out. That would be it as Ryan Madson recorded his seventeenth save of the season by getting Kyle Blanks to strikeout, swinging.
Kyle Kendrick received a no-decision as he went five and two-thirds innings, giving up three runs on six hits and two walks, while he struck out one. Michael Stutes (5-1, 3.38) got the win as he pitched an inning and a third, giving up a run on two hits, as he struck out one. Antonio Bastardo pitched two-thirds of an inning, giving up two runs on two hits, a wild pitch and two walks. David Herndon recorded his third hold of the year as he pitched a third of an inning, giving up a walk. Ryan Madson received his seventeenth save of the season as he pitched a scoreless inning, giving up a hit, while he struck out two. Mat Latos also received a no-decision as he went six innings, giving up three runs on five hits and two walks, as he struck out seven. Chad Qualls blew his fourth save opportunity of the year before taking the lost (4-5, 3.51), as he pitched a third of an inning, giving up five runs on four hits and a walk. Anthony Bass pitched two-thirds of an inning, giving up a hit, as he struck out a batter. Josh Spence pitched a third of an inning, giving up a hit and a walk, while he struck out one.
The Phils had eleven hits in the ballgame, with Chase Utley leading the team with three hits, a single and two home runs, knocking in four runs, as he raised his average to .286. Jimmy Rollins (Double), Michael Martinez (Home Run, 3 RBIs), Shane Victorino (Single), Dom Brown (Double), John Mayberry, Jr. (Single), pinch hitter Ryan Howard (Home Run, RBI), pinch hitter Ross Gload (Double) and pinch hitter Carlos Ruiz (Double), had the other eight Phils’ hits, as the team came out swinging late in the game to win it.
The Phils (63-36, 1st East) will continue their series with the Padres (44-57, 4th West) with an afternoon game, already in progress.
Saturday: Coundown to the Playoffs, Game # 20: The Phils’ rally comes too late as the Phils’ bullpen can not hold back the Mets as they drop one to the Mets, 4-3.
The bats wake up too late as the Phils drop one to the Mets, thanks in part to the bullpen being unable to hold back their rival to the north, as they lose to the Mets, 4-3. A victory by the Braves over the Cardinals lead to a tie for the lead in the NL East.
In the first, the Mets take the lead as, with one man on, and with two men out, Ike Davis hits an RBI ground-rule double, scoring Jesus Feliciano, who had earlier singled, and had moved up to second on David Wright’s walk, giving the Mets a 1-0 lead, while Wright, who had just walked, would stop at third base. The Mets took a 2-0 lead as Jose Reyes hits a lead-off home run, his ninth home run of the season. The Mets increased their lead in the seventh as, with the bases loaded, via singles to J. Feliciano and Angel Pagan, with J. Feliciano going to third and Pagan going to second on Raul Ibanez’s fielding error, and with Wright being intentionally walked, and with two men out, Davis hits a two-run single, scoring both J. Feliciano and Pagan, giving the Mets a 4-0 lead, while sending Wright to second base. The Phils started a comeback in the eighth as, with a runner on second and with one man out, Shane Victorino hits an RBI single, knocking in pinch hitter Ross Gload, who had earlier doubled, making it a 4-1 Mets’ lead. Three batters later, with runners on second and third, and with two men out, Ryan Howard hits a two-run single, knocking in Victorino, who had moved up to second on Placido Polanco’s single, then went to third on Chase Utley’s ground out, 3-unassisted, and Polanco, who had earlier singled, then went to second on Utley’s ground out, cutting the Mets’ lead down to 4-3. The Phils tried to tie the game up in the ninth as they had a runner on third, John Mayberry, who was pinch running for pinch hitter Mike Sweeney, who had earlier doubled, and had (Mayberry) gone to third on Wilson Valdez’s ground out, 3-1, and with two men out. But they would be turned back as Hisanori Takahashi got pinch hitter Carlos Ruiz to end the game by grounding out, 5-3, recording his sixth save of the year.

Chad Durbin and Ryan Madson combine for one and a third scoreless innings, giving up two walks (Madson), while striking out a batter (Durbin). Mike Pelfrey gets the win as he pitches seven and one-third innings, giving up two runs on six hits, as he strikes out five. Bobby Parnell pitches to a batter, giving up a run on a hit. Pedro Feliciano records his seventeenth hold of the year as he pitches a third of an inning, giving up a hit. Manny Acosta receives his first hold of the season as he pitches a third of an inning. Hisanori Takahashi records his sixth save of the year by pitching a scoreless inning, giving up a hit.
The Phils had nine hits in the game, with Raul Ibanez leading the team with two hits, both singles. Shane Victorino, Placido Polanco, Chase Utley, Ryan Howard, Brian Schneider, pinch hitter Ross Gload and pinch hitter Mike Sweeney had the other seven Phils’ hits, with Victorino, Polanco, Utley, Howard and Schneider’s hits being singles, with Victorino knocking in a run and Howard knocking in two runs, while Gload and Sweeney’s hits were pinch hit doubles. The Phils’ offense came to life too late to affect the outcome of the game, as the team fell into a tie for first place (81-61) in the NL East with the Braves as they defeated the Cardinals in Atlanta during the night.

The Phils come back in their half of the ninth to take a 4-3 lead, only to watch it disappear in the bottom of the ninth as Brad Lidge commits his league leading ninth blown save of the year as the Phils lose to lowly Pirates, 6-4. Their lead in the NL East remains at seven games as the Braves lost, while the Marlins win.
The Phils took a quick 1-0 lead as Jimmy Rollins lead-off the game by hitting the first pitch into right center field for a lead-off home run, his sixteenth home run of the year. The Pirates would tie it up at one-all in the second as Ryan Doumit hits a lead-off home run of his own, his eighth home run of the season. The Phils regain the lead in the third as, Rollins hits his second lead-off home run of the night, also off the first pitch, his seventeenth home run of the season, giving the Phils a 2-1 lead. In the sixth, the Pirates took the lead as, with a runner on base, and with two men out, Steve Pearce hits a two-run home run, knocking in Doumit, who had earlier walked, giving the Pirates a 3-2 lead. In the ninth, the Phils would tie the game up at three-all as, with one man on, and with one out, pinch hitter Ben Francisco hits an RBI double, scoring Carlos Ruiz, who had earlier doubled. Two batters later, with a runner on second, and now with two men out, Shane Victorino hits an RBI triple, scoring Francisco, and giving the Phils a 4-3 lead. In the bottom of the ninth, the Phils gave the ball to their closer Brad Lidge, who was pitching for the fourth straight game, to end the game. Sadly, that did not happen. Luis Cruz started the inning off with a single. Cruz would then move up to second on a wild pitch. Pinch runner Brian Bixler then replaces Cruz at second base. Pinch hitter Brandon Moss then hits an RBI single to right, that Jayson Werth at first had a problem handling, before he threw it to the plate, too late to get Bixler, who, at one point, had a late start, before scoring the tying run, making it a four-four ballgame, as Lidge blew his ninth save of the season. On the play, Moss would move up to second base on Werth’s error. Andrew McCutchen then came to the plate, before he hit a 1-0 pitch into the center field seats, his eighth home run of the season, as he gave the Pirates the 6-4 walk-off win, as he scored Moss before him.
Joe Blanton received a no-decision as he had another quality start, as he gave up three runs on six hits and two walks, while he struck out seven, in six innings of work. Tyler Walker pitched two scoreless innings, giving up just two walks, as he struck out two. Brad Lidge took the lost as he blew his ninth save of the season, as he faced three batters, getting none of them out, as he gave up three runs on three hits and a wild pitch. His record is now 0-6 with an ERA of 7.33. Ross Ohlendorf also received a no-decision, as he pitched six and a third innings, giving up two runs on five hits and three walks, as he struck out six. Joel Hanrahan converted his eighth hold as he pitched two-thirds of an inning, striking out a batter. Phil Dumatrait recorded his first hold, as he also pitched two-thirds of an inning, giving up a hit. Jesse Chavez pitched a third of an inning as he recorded his eleventh hold, striking out a batter. Matt Chapps blew his fourth save of the year before getting the win as he pitched an inning, giving up two runs on three hits. His record is now 3-7 with an ERA of 6.38.
The Phils had nine hits in the game, with Jimmy Rollins and Chase Utley leading the team with two hits each, with both of Rollins’ hits being solo home runs and one of Utley’s being a double. Shane Victorino, Ryan Howard, Carlos Ruiz, Eric Bruntlett and Ben Francisco had the Phils’ other five hits, with Victorino’s hits being a triple, knocking in a run, while Howard, Ruiz, Bruntlett and Francisco’s hits were all doubles, with Francisco knocking in a run. All but one of the Phils hits last night were for extra-bases, although the Phils did not get a key hit until the top of ninth, when they got two doubles and a triple to knock in what was thought to be the winning run, until Brad Lidge came in and lost the ballgame on six pitches. Charlie, Charlie, Charlie, when are you going to pull the trigger on Lidge? Yes, he helped the team win the World Series last season, but he is a disaster this year, and he could become a major detriment to the team’s chances of going deep into the playoffs this season, if something isn’t done.
The Phillies (72-51, 1st National League East) continue their three-games series with the Pirates (52-71, 6th National League Central) with a night game tonight. The game will be played at PNC Park and will begin at 7:05 pm Eastern. The Phils starter will be Cole Hamels (7-8, 4.78), who is coming off a lost against the Mets on August 21, where he went only five innings, giving up four runs on ten hits, while striking out six, in the Phils’ 4-2 lost. The Phils are hoping that he can come around against the Bucos. The Pirates will counter with Paul Maholm (7-7, 4.74), who is coming off a win against the Brewers on August 19, where he went seven and two-thirds innings, giving up a run on eight hits and two walks, while striking out five, in the Pirates’ 3-1 win. He will be trying to improve his overall record. The Phillies plan to put what happened to them last night behind them, while hoping that Hamels can regain his stuff while pitching against the Pirates.
Bullpen is unable to save the game as the Phillies fall to the Mets, 9-4.
For the first time in a long while, the Phillies’ bullpen have collectively let a ballgame get away as J.C. Romero and Tom Gordon would combine to blow a save as the Phillies lose to the Mets, 9-4. The Mets would score first in the first inning, as Jose Reyes, who has earlier singled, and then reached third on Ryan Church’s single, would score on a David Wright double play ball, 6-4-3, wiping out Church at second, to give the Mets a 1-0 lead. The Met would then increase their lead in the fourth, when, with runners on first and third, and one out, Jamie Moyer would pick off first base Carlos Beltran, who has just walked. But a Ryan Howard’s throwing error towards second would allow Wright, who has earlier doubled, and has reached third on a stolen base, to score, giving the Mets a 2-0 lead, while Beltran would be safe at second. Beltran would then score on a RBI single by Damion Easley, giving the Mets a 3-0 lead. The Phillies would come back in their half of the fourth, as Howard would hit a three-run home run, his twenty-third home run of the year, scoring Shane Victornio, who has earlier been hit by the pitch, and Chase Utley, who has just walked, to even the score at three. It would remain tied until the bottom of the seventh, when pinch hitter Jayson Werth would hit a RBI single to score Eric Bruntlett, who was pinch running for Pat Burrell. who has earlier singled, to give the Phillies the lead at 4-3. But, Werth would then be thrown out at second, catcher Ramon Castro to second baseman Easley, when he tried to move up to second on the throw to home, ending the inning. The Phillies then gave it to the bullpen to try and close the door. Unfortunately, the bullpen would be unable to do so. With one out, J.C. Romero would give up singles to Easley and Carlos Delgado, which would put runners on the corners. Charlie Manuel would then quickly replace Romero with Tom Gordon. While pitching to Marlon Anderson, Gordon would uncork a wild pitch, which would score Easley, tying the game at four all, and send Delgado to second. After Anderson walks, Endy Chavez would ground out to Howard, moving the runners to second and third base with two outs. Pinch hitter Brian Schneider would then hit a pinch hit double, scoring both Delgado and Anderson, and giving the Mets a 6-4 lead. Then in the ninth, with Rudy Seanez on the mound, pinch hitter Fernando Tatis would start the inning off with a pinch hit double. After moving up to third on a Wright ground out to third, he would score on a ball hit back to Seanez, which he would be unable to field for an error, allowing Beltran to reach first safely, and giving the Mets a 7-4 lead. Easley would then follow with a single, moving Beltran to second. Delgado would then follow with a single, loading the bases. Anderson would then hit a ground ball to second, that would lead to Delgado being thrown out at second for the second out of the inning, as Beltran scores, and Easley moves up to third on the fielder’s choice, making it 8-4 Mets. Easley would then score the Mets’ final run on a RBI single by Chavez. That would be it, as Tony Armas would come in to pitch a 1-2-3 ninth inning.
Jamie Moyer would get a no-decision, as he pitches a quality start, going six and two-thirds innings, giving up only three earned runs on seven hits. Ryan Madson would pitch a third of an inning, getting out the only batter that he would face. J.C. Romero, would take the lost, going one-third of an inning, giving up two earned runs on two hits. He record is now 4-2 with an ERA of 2.43. Tom Gordon will receive a blown save, his first of the year, as he goes two-thirds of an inning, giving up an earned run on one hit. Rudy Seanez would go two-thirds of an inning, giving up three earned runs on four hits. Clay Condrey would pitch a third of an inning, retiring the only man that he would face. John Maine would also get a no-decision, as he leaves the game after having pitched five and two-thirds inning, and with the count 2-2 on Ryan Howard, because of an injury to his non-pitching elbow. He has given up three earned runs on just one hit, Howard’s home run, when he was replaced by Aaron Heilman, who would then strike out Howard on one pitch, who would turn out to be the only man that he would face. Joe Smith would pitch two-thirds of an inning, giving up an earned run on one hit. Pedro Feliciano would get the win, as he would pitch only a third of an inning, giving up no runs on one hit. His record is now 1-2 with an ERA of 2.91. Duaner Sanchez would pitch an inning of scoreless ball, giving up just one hit. Tony Armas would pitch a 1-2-3 ninth to end the game.
The Phillies’ offense was only able to get four hits tonight, even if one of them, Howard’s three-run home run, did bring in a few runs. Moyer had another quality start, but the bullpen did something that it has not done at all this year, be unable to protect a lead late in the ballgame. Unfortunately, it was bound to happen, and hopefully there will not be a repeat performance during the rest of the series.
The four games series between the two rivals will continue tomorrow afternoon from Citizens Bank Park with the third game of their series. The game will begin at 1:35 pm Eastern, The Phillies (48-40) will send to the mound Kyle Kendrick (8-3, 4.58), who is coming off a victory over the Braves on July 1, where he went six plus innings, giving up only three earned runs on seven hits, in the Phillies’ 8-3 win. He will be trying for his ninth win of the year, hoping to make it three straight wins in a row, while trying to get even with the Mets for his early season defeat at their hands. The Mets (43-44) will counter with Oliver Perez (6-5, 4.98), who is coming off a win against the Yankess on June 29, where he went seven innings, giving up just an earned run on three hits, in the Mets’ 3-1 win. He will be gunning for his seventh win of the year whle trying to get the Mets back into the pennant race.
In spite of the lost, the Phillies’ lead is still three and a half games over the Marlins as the fish have once again lost to the Rockies. The Mets now trail the Phillies by four and a half games with tonight’s win. The Braves still trail by seven games as they have lost their game to the Astros. The Phillies will be trying to regroup, so that they can do some more damage and add on to their lead in the Eastern Division.
