A late inning surge gives the Phils the win, as they defeat the Braves, 10-2.
Seven runs scored in the seventh and eighth innings, including a career first grand-slam home run by pinch hitter Carlos Ruiz, gives the Phils a 10-2 win over the Braves.
The Phils took the lead in the first as, with runners on the corners, and with two men out, Ben Francisco hits an RBI single, scoring Shane Victorino who had started the game off with a double, then went to third on Jimmy Rollins’ ground out, 3-1, giving the Phils a 1-0 lead. The Braves tied the game up at one-all in the third as, with one man on, and with nobody out, Freddie Freeman hits an RBI single, knocking in Alex Gonzalez, who had earlier doubled. Two batters later, after Brandon Beachy had moved Freeman up to second base with a sacrifice bunt, 1-4, the Braves took the lead as Martin Prado hits a single to right, which Francisco misfielded for an error, allowing Freeman to score, giving the Braves a 2-1 lead. The Phils retook the lead in the fourth as, with a man on, and with two man out, Brian Schneider hits a two-run home run, his first home run of the season, knocking in Raul Ibanez, who had just walked, giving the Phils a 3-2 lead. The Braves then tried to regain the lead in the sixth, as they loaded the bases, via a single by Chipper Jones, and walks to Brian McCann and Dan Uggla, with two men out. Three batters later, with a man on second, and with two men out, the Phils made it an 8-2 lead as Howard hits an RBI double, knocking in Victorino, who had earlier singled, then stole second base. The Phils then made it a 9-2 lead in the eighth as, with one man on, and with two men out, Ruiz hits an RBI double, scoring pinch hitter Michael Martinez, who had earlier singled. The Mets, after blowing a two on, no out, situation in the first, took a 2-0 lead in the third as, with the bases loaded, via a single by Chirs Young, a bunt single by Jose Reyes, that was not fielded cleanly by Cole Hamels, allowing Young to get to second base, and a walk to Angel Pagan, moving both runners up a base, and with noone out, David Wright hits a two-run single, knocking in both Young and Reyes, and sending Pagan to third. Two batters later, with runners now on second and third, after Wright had stolen second base, and with one man out, Pagan scored on a passed ball, giving the Mets a 3-0 lead, while Wright would move up to third base. The Mets then made it a 4-0 lead as, with two men on, after Scott Hairston had walked, and with still only one man out, Wright scored on Ike Davis’ RBI single, while Hairston would stop at second base. The Mets then took a 5-0 lead as Brad Emaus hits an RBI single, scoring Hairston, while sending Davis up to second base. Two batters later, with two men on, and now with two men out, the Mets made it a 6-0 lead as Young hits an RBI single, scoring Davis, while sending Emaus to second base, while knocking Hamels out of the ball game, as he was unable to get past the third inning. The Phils would get a run back in the fifth as, with two men on, and with one man out, Placido Polanco hits an RBI double, knocking in Wilson Valdez, who had earlier singled, then stole second base, making it a 6-1 Mets’ lead, while sending pinch hitter Michael Martinez, who had earlier walked, to third base. The Mets would get the run back in the sixth as, with a runner on second, and with two men out, Hairston hits an RBI single, knocking in Wright, who had earlier doubled, making it a 7-1 Mets’ lead, while Hairston would move up to second on the late throw to home plate. In other news, Chase Utley did a little jogging before yesterday’s game to test the progress of his right leg. He is progressing, but he is still going to be out for a while. Shane Victorino went back into the lineup yesterday, but sadly went 0 for 5, with three strikeouts. During the weekend, Kyle Kendrick’s home in Washington state was broken into, with a number of items, including both his 2008 World Series and his 2009 NL rings, being stolen. Hopefully, the culprits will be found quickly and brought to justice.

The Phils then increased their lead in the fourth as, with one man on, and with one man out, Carlos Ruiz hits a two-run home run, his seventh home run of the year, knocking in Raul Ibanez, who had just walked, giving the Phils a 4-0 lead. The Phils then made it 6-0 in the fifth as, with two men on, and with one man out, Werth hits an RBI single, scoring Utley, who had earlier walked, and then stole second, as Logan Morrison made a missed catch error on the ball, before allowing Ryan Howard, who had just walked, to score on a throwing error to the plate, allowing Werth to move up to second base. The Marlins then tried to add another run, as they got two men on, via a Dan Uggla fielder’s choice grounder, as Hanley Ramirez, who had just doubled, was caught off second base by shortstop Wilson Valdez, and then put into a run down, before finally being tagged out, 6-5-4, at second base, keeping Uggla at first, and a single by Gaby Sanchez, sending Uggla up to second base. But Blanton got out of the inning by getting Mike Stanton to fly out to right for the inning’s second out, and then by striking out Chad Tracy. The Phils would get the run back in the seventh as pinch hitter Greg Dobbs hits a lead-off pinch hit home run, his fifth home run of the year, giving the Phils an 11-1 lead. The Marlins tried once again to come back as, with one man on, and with one man out, Uggla hits a two-run home run, his thirtieth home run of the season, knocking in Morrison, who had earlier been hit by the pitch, making it an 11-3 Phils’ lead. Three batters later, with a runner on second, and now with two men out, Tracy hits an RBI double, knocking in Stanton, who had earlier doubled, making it an 11-4 Phils’ lead. But, the Phils would finally get out of the inning as David Herndon would get Brad Davis to ground out, 5-3. Danys Baez then came in and pitched a scoreless ninth, getting Ramirez to end the game by grounding out, 5-3.

The Astros then tried to increase their lead as Sanchez tried to score on Carlos Lee’s double, but was instead gun down at home plate, 8-4-2, for the inning’s second out. This base running blunder might have come back to haunt the Phils, as, in the eighth, with two men on, and with two men out, the Astros took the lead as Lee hits a two-run single, scoring pinch hitter Jason Michaels, who had earlier singled, had moved up to second on Bourn’s bunt single, and moved to third on Sanchez’s sacrifice bunt, 5-4, and Bourn, who had gotten on base with a bunt single, when he had in fact went out of the base line to avoid being tagged by Ryan Howard, but was called safe by the first base umpire, which lead to a long argument by Charlie Manuel before he was ejected from the game for arguing the call, and then went to second on Sanchez’s bunt, giving the Astros a 3-2 lead. That would end up being the final score as Brandon Lyon put down the Phils in the ninth for his seventh save of the season.

The Phils lose Saturday night’s game, 7-5, as Brad Lidge gives up a three-run home run after Carlos Ruiz had given them a one run lead in the top of the ninth, before he save the game on Sunday as the Phils’ defeat the Nationals in eleven innings, 6-4.
On Saturday, the Nationals took the lead in the first as, with two men on, and with two men out, Josh Willingham hits an RBI single, knocking in Nyjer Morgan, who had earlier singled, and had gone up to second on Ryan Zimmerman’s single, giving the Nats a 1-0 lead, while sending Zimmerman, who had earlier singled, on to third base. One batter later, with runners on the corners, the Nats made it a 2-0 lead as Roger Bernadina hits an RBI single, knocking in Zimmerman, while sending Willingham up to second base. The Nats then made it a 3-0 lead as Ivan Rodriguez hits an RBI single, scoring Willingham, while sending Bernadina on to third. The Phil made it a 6-4 lead as Werth hits an RBI double, scoring Polanco. The Phils then handed the ball over to Lidge, who this time had a 1-2-3 inning, recording his eleventh save of the year.

The Phils (57-48, 2nd NL East), now two and a half games behind the Braves in the East (if not for Lidge’s blown save on Saturday, they could be a game and a half behind the Braves, as Atlanta lost two of three to the Reds in Cincinnati during the weekend) have the day off today, before they go to face the Marlins for three in Miami, starting tomorrow night. Who would have thought that with all of the problems the Phils have had this year, they would still be within striking distance of the Braves in the East? I’m sure most people wouldn’t, including a lot of my fellow Phillies fans. This means that either this team is very resiliant, or the Braves aren’t as strong as everyone have been thinking they were during the last two months.

The Phils took the lead in the first as, with two men on, and with one man out, Ryan Howard hits an RBI double, knocking in Placido Polanco, who had earlier gotten on base with an infield single, and had moved up to second on Raul Ibanez’s single, giving the Phils a 1-0 lead, while sending Ibanez, who had just singled, on to third. The Phils then added to their lead as, with two men still on base, and now with two men out, Shane Victorino hits a two-run single, scoring both Ibanez and Howard, giving the Phils a 3-0 lead. The Cards got a run back in their half of the first as, with two men on, and with nobody out, Albert Pujols hits an RBI ground out, 6-3, scoring Felipe Lopez, who had earlier singled, and then had gone on to third on Jon Jay’s ground-rule double, making it a 3-1 Phils’ lead. The Cards made it a 3-2 Phils lead in the second as, with runners on second and third, and with one man out, Brendan Ryan hits an RBI ground out, 6-3, scoring Skip Schumaker, who had earlier walked, had moved up to second base on Yadier Molina’s walk, then went to third on Blake Hawksworth’s sacrifice bunt, 1-4, while Molina would move up to second. Two batters later, with no man on, and now with two outs, the Cardinals made it a 6-4 lead as Allen Craig hits a solo home run, the first home run of his career. The next batter, Schumaker, increased the Cardinals’ lead to 7-4 with a solo home run of his own, his third home run of the season. The Cards made it 8-4 in the sixth as pitch hitter Randy Winn hits a pitch hit home run, his second home run of the year. That would end up being the final score, as the Phils would mount no more offense before going down in the ninth as Howard hits into a 6-3 double play to end the game, wiping out at second Ibanez, who had earlier walked.

The Phils will send to the mound Jamie Moyer (9-9, 4.88), who is coming off a lost against the Cubs on July 15, where he pitched only three innings, giving up six runs on five hits, while striking out a batter, in the Phils’ 12-6 lost. In his last three starts, his record is 0-3, as he pitched fourteen and a third innings, giving up fourteen runs, thirteen of which were earned, on seventeen hits and three walks, while he struck out twelve. His will be going for his tenth win for the fourth time, hoping that this time he will actually get the win. The Cards will counter with Chris Carpenter (10-3, 3.16), who is coming off a win over the Dodgers on July 15, as he went eight innings, giving up a run on four hits, while striking out six, in the Cards’ 7-1 win. In his last three starts, his record is 1-2, as he pitched seventeen inning, giving up thirteen runs, twelve of which were earned, on twenty-two hits and four walks, while he struck out fourteen. He will be trying to keep the Phils in their current miserable state. The Phils have now lost four of their first five games in the second half. The offense is starting to hit, and score runs, but the starting pitching is now starting to get bad. What in the bleep have happen to the team that was suppose to be the beast of the National League? I do not know about the rest of you, but this is starting to feel more and more like 1979. If it is, I’m hoping 2011 will be like 1980, without the need for a Dallas Green type of manager at the helm.
