A late inning surge gives the Phils the win, as they defeat the Braves, 10-2.

Seven runs scored in the seventh and eighth innings, including a career first grand-slam home run by pinch hitter Carlos Ruiz, gives the Phils a 10-2 win over the Braves.

The Phils took the lead in the first as, with runners on the corners, and with two men out, Ben Francisco hits an RBI single, scoring Shane Victorino who had started the game off with a double, then went to third on Jimmy Rollins’ ground out, 3-1, giving the Phils a 1-0 lead. The Braves tied the game up at one-all in the third as, with one man on, and with nobody out, Freddie Freeman hits an RBI single, knocking in Alex Gonzalez, who had earlier doubled. Two batters later, after Brandon Beachy had moved Freeman up to second base with a sacrifice bunt, 1-4, the Braves took the lead as Martin Prado hits a single to right, which Francisco misfielded for an error, allowing Freeman to score, giving the Braves a 2-1 lead. The Phils retook the lead in the fourth as, with a man on, and with two man out, Brian Schneider hits a two-run home run, his first home run of the season, knocking in Raul Ibanez, who had just walked, giving the Phils a 3-2 lead. The Braves then tried to regain the lead in the sixth, as they loaded the bases, via a single by Chipper Jones, and walks to Brian McCann and Dan Uggla, with two men out. But Roy Oswalt got out of the inning by getting Jason Heyward to pop up to the third baseman for the inning’s final out. The Phils then broke the game wide open in the seventh as, with the bases loaded, via a double by Ibanez, a pinch hit single by pinch hitter John Mayberry, Jr. sending Ibanez over to third base, and a walk to Wilson Valdez, moving Mayberry, Jr. up to second base, and with nobody out, pinch hitter Carlos Ruiz hits a pinch hit grand-slam home run, his first home run of the season, and his first career grand-slam, knocking in Ibanez, Mayberry, Jr. and Vadez, giving the Phils a 7-2 lead. Three batters later, with a man on second, and with two men out, the Phils made it an 8-2 lead as Howard hits an RBI double, knocking in Victorino, who had earlier singled, then stole second base. The Phils then made it a 9-2 lead in the eighth as, with one man on, and with two men out, Ruiz hits an RBI double, scoring pinch hitter Michael Martinez, who had earlier singled. The Phils then took a 10-2 lead as Victorino hits an RBI single, scoring Ruiz. That would be the final score, as J.C. Romero and Danys Baez would pitch a pair of scoreless innings.

Roy Oswalt (2-0, 2.25) got the win as he pitched six innings, giving up two runs, only one of which was earned, on five runs and two walks, while he struck out only two batters. David Herndon, J.C. Romero and Danys Baez combined for three scoreless innings, giving up only one hit (Baez), while striking out one (Baez). Brandon Beachy (0-1, 3.75) took the lost as he pitched six innings plus one batter, giving up four runs on seven hits and two walks, while striking out two batters. George Sherrill pitched to two batters, giving up two runs on a hit and a walk. Scott Linebrink pitched an inning, giving up two runs on three hits, while striking out two. Cristhian Martinez pitched two innings, giving up two runs on four hits, while also striking out two.

The Phils had fifteen hits in the game, with Shane Victorino leading the team with four hits, three singles and a double, knocking in a run, while scoring two, lifting his average to .375. Jimmy Rollins (Single, Double) and Carlos Ruiz (Grand-Slam Home Run, Double, 5 RBIs) followed with two hits each. Ryan Howard (Double, RBI), Ben Francisco (Single, RBI), Raul Ibanez (Double), Brian Schneider (Home Run, 2 RBIs), Roy Oswalt (Single), pinch hitter John Mayberry, Jr. (Single) and pinch hitter Michael Martinez (Single) had the other seven Phils’ hits. The Phils offense went back to where they had left off on Thursday, while their pinch hitters went three for three, knocking in four runs, all on Carlos Ruiz’s first career grand-slam home run.

The Phils (6-2, 1st) will conclude their three-games series with the Braves (4-5, 3rd) tomorrow with an afternoon game at Turner Field. The game will start at 1:05 pm EDT. The Phils will send to the mound Cole Hamels (0-1, 20.25), who is coming off a horrible start against the Mets on April 5, as he went only two and two-thirds innings, giving up six runs on seven hits, two walks and a hit batter, while striking out only three batters, in the Phils’ 7-1 lost. He will be trying to bounce back from that lost. Derek Lowe (1-1, 0.77), who is coming off a lost against the Brewers on April 5, as he pitched six innings, giving a run on five hits and three walks, while he struck out seven, in the Braves’ 6-1 lost. He will be trying to give the Braves the series win. The Phils will be going for their third series win, while looking to see if Hamels will bounce back from his previous start.

The Phils lose their first game of the season as Cole Hamels’ problem with the Mets continue, as the Phils lose, 7-1.

Cole Hamels troubles with the Mets continue as he is knocked out of the box by the Mets starting pitcher in a six-run third inning, as the Phils drop one to the Mets, 7-1.

The Mets, after blowing a two on, no out, situation in the first, took a 2-0 lead in the third as, with the bases loaded, via a single by Chirs Young, a bunt single by Jose Reyes, that was not fielded cleanly by Cole Hamels, allowing Young to get to second base, and a walk to Angel Pagan, moving both runners up a base, and with noone out, David Wright hits a two-run single, knocking in both Young and Reyes, and sending Pagan to third. Two batters later, with runners now on second and third, after Wright had stolen second base, and with one man out, Pagan scored on a passed ball, giving the Mets a 3-0 lead, while Wright would move up to third base. The Mets then made it a 4-0 lead as, with two men on, after Scott Hairston had walked, and with still only one man out, Wright scored on Ike Davis’ RBI single, while Hairston would stop at second base. The Mets then took a 5-0 lead as Brad Emaus hits an RBI single, scoring Hairston, while sending Davis up to second base. Two batters later, with two men on, and now with two men out, the Mets made it a 6-0 lead as Young hits an RBI single, scoring Davis, while sending Emaus to second base, while knocking Hamels out of the ball game, as he was unable to get past the third inning. The Phils would get a run back in the fifth as, with two men on, and with one man out, Placido Polanco hits an RBI double, knocking in Wilson Valdez, who had earlier singled, then stole second base, making it a 6-1 Mets’ lead, while sending pinch hitter Michael Martinez, who had earlier walked, to third base. The Mets would get the run back in the sixth as, with a runner on second, and with two men out, Hairston hits an RBI single, knocking in Wright, who had earlier doubled, making it a 7-1 Mets’ lead, while Hairston would move up to second on the late throw to home plate. That would be the final score, as the Phils would be unable to mount a rally, thanks in part to the wind denying Ben Francisco a chance for a pair of home runs and three RBIs, as it knocked down a couple of deep hit fly balls to left.

Cole Hamels (0-1, 20.25) took the lost as he pitched only two and two-thirds innings, giving up six runs on seven hits and two walks, while he struck out three. Kyle Kendrick pitched two and a third scoreless innings, giving up two hits and a walk, while striking out one. David Herndon followed with an inning, giving up a run on two hits and a walk, while striking out one. J.C. Romero, Danys Baez and Antonio Bastardo combined for three scoreless innings, giving up two hits (Romero (1), Baez (1)), while striking out two (Romero (1), Bastardo (1)) between them. Chris Young (1-0, 1.69) got the win as he pitched five and a third innings, giving up a run on five hits and four walks, while striking out seven, as he effectively pitched himself out of a couple of jams. D.J. Carrasco pitched an inning and two-thirds, giving up a hit, while striking out a batter. Tim Byrdak and Bobby Parnell combined for two scoreless innings, giving up a hit (Parnell), while striking out one (Byrdak) between them. The Phils’ bullpen did a very admirable job the first time one of the team’s starters did not go deep into a ballgame, as they gave up only one run (Herndon) to the Mets after Hamels got knocked out of the box in the third inning.

The Phils had just seven hits in the game, with Raul Ibanez leading the team with two hits, both singles, as he raised his batting average to .267. Placido Polanco (Double, RBI), Jimmy Rollins (Single), Wilson Valdez (Single), pinch hitter Pete Orr (Single) and pinch hitter Ross Gload (Single), had the other five Phils’ hits, while Ben Francisco was robbed of a pair of home runs as the wind knocked down both of his hard shots to left field.

The Phils (3-1, T-1st) will continue their three games series with the Mets (3-1, T-1st) with a night game at Citizens Bank Park. Game time is 7:05 EDT. The Phils will send to the mound Joe Blanton (0-0, -.–), who is coming off a 9-6 2010, with a 4.82 ERA, finishing the season strong. He will be trying to get the Phils back on the winning track, while evening the series. The Mets will counter with Mike Pelfrey (0-1, 10.38), who is coming off a bad opening day start against the Marlins on April 1, as he pitched four and a third innings, giving up five runs on four hits and four walks, while he struck out two Marlins, in the Mets’ 6-2 lost. He will be trying to even his record, and give the Mets early control of first place. The Phils will be trying to regroup after last night’s lost, to regain sole possession of first place in the East.

In other news, Chase Utley did a little jogging before yesterday’s game to test the progress of his right leg. He is progressing, but he is still going to be out for a while. Shane Victorino went back into the lineup yesterday, but sadly went 0 for 5, with three strikeouts. During the weekend, Kyle Kendrick’s home in Washington state was broken into, with a number of items, including both his 2008 World Series and his 2009 NL rings, being stolen. Hopefully, the culprits will be found quickly and brought to justice.

Countdown to the Playoffs, Game # 18: The bats continue to hit as they support Joe Blanton, as the Phils pound the fish, 11-4.

The offense gave Joe Blanton massive runs support, including four bombs, as they pounded the Marlins, 11-4, staying a game ahead of the Braves in the NL East.

The Phils took the lead in the second as, with one man out, Jayson Werth hits a solo home run, his twenty-first home run of the season, giving the Phils a 1-0 lead. The Phils made it a 2-0 lead in the third as, with two men out, Chase Utley hits a solo home run, his fourteenth home run of the season. The Phils then increased their lead in the fourth as, with one man on, and with one man out, Carlos Ruiz hits a two-run home run, his seventh home run of the year, knocking in Raul Ibanez, who had just walked, giving the Phils a 4-0 lead. The Phils then made it 6-0 in the fifth as, with two men on, and with one man out, Werth hits an RBI single, scoring Utley, who had earlier walked, and then stole second, as Logan Morrison made a missed catch error on the ball, before allowing Ryan Howard, who had just walked, to score on a throwing error to the plate, allowing Werth to move up to second base. Two batters later, with a runner still on second, and now with two men out, Ruiz hits an RBI single, scoring Werth, to give the Phils a 7-0 lead. The Phils made it 8-0 in the sixth as, with runners on the corners, and with nobody out, Placido Polanco hits an RBI single, scoring Joe Blanton, who had earlier singled, then went to third on Shane Victorino’s single, while sending Victorino up to second base. Two batters later, with one man out, the Phils took a 9-0 lead as Howard hits an RBI single, scoring Victorino, while sending Polanco up to second base, before going to third on the late throw to the plate. Then with the bases loaded, as Ibanez is walked, moving Howard up to second base, Ruiz received an RBI walk, forcing in Polanco, making it a 10-0 Phils’ lead, while moving both Howard and Ibanez up a base. Meanwhile, Blanton was setting down the Marlins in the first five innings, giving up only two hits and two walks, while striking out seven. The Marlins then scored in their half of the sixth as Morrison hits a solo home run, his second home run of the season, making it a 10-1 Phils’ lead. The Marlins then tried to add another run, as they got two men on, via a Dan Uggla fielder’s choice grounder, as Hanley Ramirez, who had just doubled, was caught off second base by shortstop Wilson Valdez, and then put into a run down, before finally being tagged out, 6-5-4, at second base, keeping Uggla at first, and a single by Gaby Sanchez, sending Uggla up to second base. But Blanton got out of the inning by getting Mike Stanton to fly out to right for the inning’s second out, and then by striking out Chad Tracy. The Phils would get the run back in the seventh as pinch hitter Greg Dobbs hits a lead-off pinch hit home run, his fifth home run of the year, giving the Phils an 11-1 lead. The Marlins tried once again to come back as, with one man on, and with one man out, Uggla hits a two-run home run, his thirtieth home run of the season, knocking in Morrison, who had earlier been hit by the pitch, making it an 11-3 Phils’ lead. Three batters later, with a runner on second, and now with two men out, Tracy hits an RBI double, knocking in Stanton, who had earlier doubled, making it an 11-4 Phils’ lead. But, the Phils would finally get out of the inning as David Herndon would get Brad Davis to ground out, 5-3. Danys Baez then came in and pitched a scoreless ninth, getting Ramirez to end the game by grounding out, 5-3.

The other Phil’s run came in on an error. The offense continues to explode, while Blanton has added to the team’s recent good starting performances.

The Phils (84-61, 1st) continue their three-game series with the Marlins (73-70, 3rd) with a night game tonight. The game will be played at Sun Life Stadium and will start at 7:10 pm Eastern. The Phils will send to the mound Cole Hamels (10-10, 3.06), who is coming off a win against the Marlins on September 8, as he pitched seven strong shut out innings, giving up just four hits and a walk, while striking out five, in the Phils’ 10-6 win. He will be hoping that the Phils will not have figured him out yet. Saturday: Coundown to the Playoffs, Game # 20: The Phils’ rally comes too late as the Phils’ bullpen can not hold back the Mets as they drop one to the Mets, 4-3.

The bats wake up too late as the Phils drop one to the Mets, thanks in part to the bullpen being unable to hold back their rival to the north, as they lose to the Mets, 4-3. A victory by the Braves over the Cardinals lead to a tie for the lead in the NL East.

In the first, the Mets take the lead as, with one man on, and with two men out, Ike Davis hits an RBI ground-rule double, scoring Jesus Feliciano, who had earlier singled, and had moved up to second on David Wright’s walk, giving the Mets a 1-0 lead, while Wright, who had just walked, would stop at third base. The Mets took a 2-0 lead as Jose Reyes hits a lead-off home run, his ninth home run of the season. The Mets increased their lead in the seventh as, with the bases loaded, via singles to J. Feliciano and Angel Pagan, with J. The Phils’ offense came to life too late to affect the outcome of the game, as the team fell into a tie for first place (81-61) in the NL East with the Braves as they defeated the Cardinals in Atlanta during the night.

The Phils leave L.A. after two straight drubbings of the Dodgers, winning by scores of 8-4 and 5-1.

On Tuesday, the Dodgers took the lead in the first as, with the bases loaded, via a double to Scott Podsednik, Jamey Carroll being hit by the pitch, and a single by Matt Kemp, moving both Podsednik and Carroll up a base, and with one man out, James Loney had an RBI walk, scoring Podsednik, while moving both Carroll and Kemp up a base. The Phils took the lead in the second as, with two men on base, and with one man out, Brian Schneider hits a three-run home run, his fourth home run of the season, knocking in Jayson Werth, who had earlier doubled, and Shane Victorino, who has just walked, giving the Phils a 3-1 lead. The Dodgers then cut the Phils’ lead down to 6-4 in the sixth as, with one man on, and with nobody out, Loney hits a two-run home run, his ninth home run of the season, knocking in Kemp, who had earlier singled. The Phils regain the two runs in the seventh as, with the bases loaded, via walks to Howard and Werth, the two moving up to third and second respectively on Raul Ibanez’s ground out, 4-3, and a intentional walk to Victorino, and with two men out, pinch hitter Carlos Ruiz hits a two-run single, scoring both Howard and Werth, making it an 8-4 Phils’ lead, while sending Victorino up to second base. The Phils then made it 2-0 in the second as Victorino hits a lead-off home run of his own, his sixteenth home run of the year. That would be more than enough for Phils’ starter Roy Oswalt to work with, as he would have a no-hitter going for five and two-third innings, until it was broken up in the sixth by Casey Blake with a single, who moved to second Loney, who had earlier walked. Oswalt would end the threat by getting Ronnie Belliard to pop out to the second baseman. Post No. 800: Phils lose close one thanks in part to a bad call by the first base ump, as they drop one to the Astros, 3-2.

Thanks in part to a bad call by the first base umpire, the Phils drop a close one to the Astros as former Phil Brett Myers come back to stifle his ex-teammates, 3-2.

The Astros took the lead in the first as, with runners on the corners, and with nobody out, Hunter Pence hits a sacrifice fly, scoring Michael Bourn, who had earlier singled, stole second base and then moved up to third on Angel Sanchez’s single, giving the Astros a 1-0 lead, while sending Sanchez, who had just singled, on to second base. The Astros then tried to increase their lead as Sanchez tried to score on Carlos Lee’s double, but was instead gun down at home plate, 8-4-2, for the inning’s second out. The Phils tied it up at one-all in the third as Carlos Ruiz hits a lead-off home run, his sixth home run of the year. The Phils then took the lead later in the inning as, with two men on, and with one man out, Chase Utley hits an RBI single, knocking in Jimmy Rollins, who had earlier singled, before moving up to second on Lee’s fielding error, moved up to third on a fielder’s choice grounder hit by Shane Victorino, as Joe Blanton, who had earlier singled, and had gone to third on Rollins’ single, is thrown out at home, 3-2, giving the Phils’ a 2-1 lead, while Victorino, who was safe at first on the fielder’s choice, moved up to second base. The Phils tried to add to their lead in the sixth as, with a runner on second, Jayson Werth, via a double, and with two men out, after Raul Ibanez had just struck out, swinging, the Astros proceeded to intentionally walk Ruiz, to get to Wilson Valdez, but, after ball four is thrown, Astros catcher Humberto Quintero threw a strike to second base, picking off Werth, 2-6, who’s mind appeared to have been somewhere else, to end the inning. This base running blunder might have come back to haunt the Phils, as, in the eighth, with two men on, and with two men out, the Astros took the lead as Lee hits a two-run single, scoring pinch hitter Jason Michaels, who had earlier singled, had moved up to second on Bourn’s bunt single, and moved to third on Sanchez’s sacrifice bunt, 5-4, and Bourn, who had gotten on base with a bunt single, when he had in fact went out of the base line to avoid being tagged by Ryan Howard, but was called safe by the first base umpire, which lead to a long argument by Charlie Manuel before he was ejected from the game for arguing the call, and then went to second on Sanchez’s bunt, giving the Astros a 3-2 lead. That would end up being the final score as Brandon Lyon put down the Phils in the ninth for his seventh save of the season.

Joe Blanton receives a no-decision as he pitches seven strong innings, giving up just one run on six hits, while striking out nine. Ryan Madson records his fourth blown save of the year before taking the lost as he pitches an inning, giving up two runs on three hits, while striking out a batter. The offense did not get the much needed key hit last night.

The Phils (70-54, 2nd East) will continue their series with the Astros (55-69, 4th Central) with a night game tonight. The game will be played at Citizens Bank Park and will start at 7:05 pm Eastern. In his last three starts, his record is 0-3, as he pitched twenty innings, giving up seven runs on eighteen hits and three walks, while striking out twenty-four. He will be hoping that the bats will finally give him some runs so that he can finally end his win-less streak. You ever have one of those days…? The Phils are crushed by the Dodgers, 15-9.

The Phils’ pitching staff is beaten up by the Dodgers’ bats, despite the offense supplying some runs, as the Phils lose to the Dodgers, 15-9.

The Dodgers took a quick 1-0 lead in the first as, with one man on, and with one man out, Andre Ethier hits an RBI single, scoring Scott Podsednik, who had earlier singled, and had moved up to second on Ryan Theriot’s ground out, 6-3. The Dodgers added to their lead in the third as, with one man on, and with one man out, Ethier hits an RBI double, scoring Theriot, who had just singled, to give the Dodgers a 2-0 lead. Three batters later, with runners on the corners, and now with two men out, Jay Gibbons hits an RBI single, scoring Ethier, who had moved up to second base on James Loney’s walk, then went to third when Casey Blake’s hit a grounder to third, for a 5-4 force out at second of Loney for the inning’s second out, giving the Dodgers a 3-0 lead, while sending Blake, who was safe at first on the force out, to third. The Dodgers then increased their lead in the fourth as, with the bases loaded, via a single to Brad Ausmus, who then moved up to second as Jimmy Rollins made a miss catch error on a throw from Phils’ starter Kyle Kendrick on a ball hit by Dodgers’ starter Vicente Padilla, who was then safe on first on the error, and a single by Podsednik, which sent Ausmus to third, and Padilla to second, and with nobody out, Theriot hits a sacrifice fly, scoring Ausmus, to give the Dodgers a 4-0 lead, while moving Padilla to third base after the catch. After Kendrick is replaced by Antonio Bastardo, he is greeted by Ethier with an RBI single, scoring Padilla, giving the Dodgers a 5-0 lead, while sending Podsednik up to second base. The next batter, Loney, gave the Dodgers a 6-0 lead with an RBI single, scoring Podsednik, while moving Ethier to second base. The Phils tried to make a come back in their half of the fourth as, with the bases loaded, via a single to Placido Polanco and walks to Raul Ibanez and Jayson Werth, and with one man out, Dom Brown hits a sacrifice fly, scoring Polanco, making it a 7-1 Dodgers’ lead. The Phils then made it a 7-2 Dodgers’ lead in the fifth as, with runners on the corners, and with one man out, Polanco hits an RBI ground out, 5-3, knocking in Wilson Valdez, who had earlier singled, and had gone to third on Rollins’ single, while moving Rollins up to second base. The next batter, Ross Gload, then followed with a two-run home run, his fifth home run of the year, knocking in Rollins, cutting the Dodgers’ lead to 7-4. The Dodgers would get a run back in the sixth as, with two men on, and with nobody out, Loney hits an RBI double, scoring Theriot, who had earlier singled, and then stole second base, giving the Dodgers an 8-4 lead, while sending Ethier, who had just walked, to third base. The Dodgers then made it a 9-4 lead as, with runners on second and third, and with still nobody out, Blake hits a sacrifice fly, scoring Ethier. The Dodgers then took an 11-4 lead as Gibbons hits a two-run home run, his first home run of the season, knocking in Loney. The Phils then made it an 11-5 Dodgers’ lead as, with one man out, Brown hits a solo home run, his first career home run. The Dodgers then added to their lead in the seventh as, with the bases loaded again, via a single by Theriot, a single by Ethier, sending Theriot to second base, a force out by Loney, 1-6, forcing out Ethier at second, while Theriot went to third and Loney would beat the throw to first, and a walk to Blake, moving Loney up to second base, and with two men out, pinch hitter Matt Kemp hits a two-run single, scoring both Theriot and Loney, giving the Dodgers a 13-5 lead, while moving Blake up to third. The Phils would make it a 13-7 Dodgers’ lead as, with a runner on base, and with two men out, Gload hits a two-run home run, his sixth home run of the year and his second home run of the night, knocking in pinch hitter Greg Dobbs, who had just singled. The Dodgers then made it 15-7 in the ninth as, with a runner on base, and with one man out, Blake hits a two-run home run, his twelfth home run of the year, knocking in Ethier, who was earlier hit by the pitch. The Phils then cut the Dodgers’ lead down to 15-9 as, with the bases loaded, via Gload reaching base on a force out, 4-6, wiping out Rollins, who had earlier singled, at second base, a Raul Ibanez single, sending Gload to second, and a Werth walk, moving both runners up a base, and with two men out, Brown hits a two-run double, scoring both Gload and Ibanez, while sending Werth on to third. But that would be it as pinch hitter Cole Hamels flied out to left, ending the game.

Kyle Kendrick took the lost as he pitches just three and a third innings, giving up six runs, five of which were earned, on eight hits and two walks, while striking out one. Placido Polanco, Raul Ibanez, Jayson Werth, pinch hitter Greg Dobbs and pinch hitter Mike Sweeney had the other five Phils’ hit, all singles, with Polanco knocking in a run. The Phils’ offense was unable to catch up as the bullpen was unable to stop the previously slumping Dodgers.

The Phils (62-50, 2nd NL East) will continue their series with the Dodgers (59-54, 3rd NL West) with a night game tonight. The game will be played at Citizens Bank Park, and will start at 7:05 pm Eastern. The Phils lose Saturday night’s game, 7-5, as Brad Lidge gives up a three-run home run after Carlos Ruiz had given them a one run lead in the top of the ninth, before he save the game on Sunday as the Phils’ defeat the Nationals in eleven innings, 6-4.

After Morgan moves Moore up to second on a sacrifice bunt, 3-4, for the inning’s first out, Lidge walks Adam Kennedy to put two men on base. The Phils would retake the lead in the eleventh as, with a runner on third, and with two men out, Polanco hits an RBI single, knocking in Valdez, who was safe at first on a bunt attempt, although replays showed that he was actually out, the Phils catching a break, moved up to second on pinch hitter Roy Oswalt’s sacrifice bunt, 3-4, and then went to third on Rollins’ fly out to center, giving the Phils a 5-4 lead. The Phils’ offense, while scoring runs, haven’t busted open a game on the road since the All-Star break. They’re due for a few, although they might not be able to do it for a while with Ryan Howard being day-to-day because of his ankle injury.

The Phils (57-48, 2nd NL East), now two and a half games behind the Braves in the East (if not for Lidge’s blown save on Saturday, they could be a game and a half behind the Braves, as Atlanta lost two of three to the Reds in Cincinnati during the weekend) have the day off today, before they go to face the Marlins for three in Miami, starting tomorrow night. Who would have thought that with all of the problems the Phils have had this year, they would still be within striking distance of the Braves in the East? I’m sure most people wouldn’t, including a lot of my fellow Phillies fans. This means that either this team is very resiliant, or the Braves aren’t as strong as everyone have been thinking they were during the last two months.

Phils win series with the Rockies with a breakout win on Saturday, 10-2 and a wierd win on Sunday, 4-3.

After the game was held up for over ninety minutes by a rain delay, the Phils regained the lead in the seventh. Pinch hitter Wilson Valdez started the inning off with a pinch hit ground-rule double, before scoring on an RBI single by Rollins, tying the game up at three-all, before he moved up to second on a fielding error by Gonzalez. Four batters later, with runners on the corners, via Rollins stealing third, and Howard walking, and with two men out, Rollins scored the go-ahead run on a wild pitch by Rafael Betancourt, as Betancourt did not cover home plate, giving the Phils a 4-3 lead. That would be the final score as Brad Lidge would record his ninth save of the year as he got out of a bases loaded jam, via a walk to Jonathan Herrera, a single to Mora, sending Herrera to second, and a walk to pinch hitter Jason Giambi, moving both Herrera and Mora up a base, and with two men out, by striking out Stewart on a call third strike.

The last Phil run scored on a wild pitch. The Phils’ offense seems to have responded to the firing of hitting coach Milt Thompson, as they have now won four straight games, and seven straight at home.

The Phils (52-46, 2nd NL East) conclude their series with the Rockies (51-47, 4th NL West), going for the series sweep, with an afternoon game, already in progress, with the Phils leading in the eighth inning.

The Cards made it a 3-2 Phils lead in the second as, with runners on second and third, and with one man out, Brendan Ryan hits an RBI ground out, 6-3, scoring Skip Schumaker, who had earlier walked, had moved up to second base on Yadier Molina’s walk, then went to third on Blake Hawksworth’s sacrifice bunt, 1-4, while Molina would move up to second. The Phils increased their lead in the fourth as, with two men on, and with two outs, Jimmy Rollins hits an RBI single, knocking in Carlos Ruiz, who had earlier doubled, making it a 4-2 Phils’ lead, while sending Kyle Kendrick, who had just walked, on to second base. In the fifth, the wheels came off, as Kendrick ran into trouble. The Cardinals made it a 4-3 Phils’ lead as, with one man on, and with one out, Jay hits an RBI double, scoring Lopez, who had just walked. The Cardinals then took the lead as Pujols hits a two-run home run, his twenty-second home run of the year, knocking in Jay, giving the Cards a 5-4 lead. Two batters later, with no man on, and now with two outs, the Cardinals made it a 6-4 lead as Allen Craig hits a solo home run, the first home run of his career. The next batter, Schumaker, increased the Cardinals’ lead to 7-4 with a solo home run of his own, his third home run of the season. The Cards made it 8-4 in the sixth as pitch hitter Randy Winn hits a pitch hit home run, his second home run of the year. That would end up being the final score, as the Phils would mount no more offense before going down in the ninth as Howard hits into a 6-3 double play to end the game, wiping out at second Ibanez, who had earlier walked.

Kyle Kendrick took the lost as he pitches five innings, giving up seven runs on seven hits and three walks, while striking out two. His record is now 5-4 with a 4.82 ERA. Chad Durbin pitches an inning, giving up a run on one hit. J.C. Romero and Ryan Madson threw a pair of 1-2-3 innings. Blake Hawksworth gets the win as he pitches six innings, giving up four runs on ten hits and three walks, while striking out a batter. His record is now 4-5 with a 4.85 ERA. Trever Miller, Jason Motte and Kyle McClellan combine for three scoreless innings, giving up three hits (Miller (1), Motte (2)) and a walk (McClellan) between them, while striking out 1 batter (Miller).

The Phils had a total of thirteen hits in a losing cause, with Raul Ibanez, Ryan Howard, Jayson Werth and Carlos Ruiz all leading the team with two hits each. Ibanez and Werth’s two hits were singles, while Ruiz’s hits were a single and a double, scoring a run, and Howard’s hits were also a single and a double, knocking in a run, and scoring a run. Jimmy Rollins, Placido Polanco, Shane Victorino, pinch hitter Greg Dobbs and pinch hitter Ross Gload had the other five Phils’ hits, all singles, with Rollins knocking in a run and Victorino knocking in two runs. The Phils’ offense is still not getting the key hits, as the starting pitching is now starting to get bad.

The Phils (48-44, 3rd NL East) continue their lousy road trip with the second of four games against the Cards (52-41, 1st NL Central). The game will be played at Busch Stadium and will start at 8:15 pm Eastern (7:15 pm Central). The Phils will send to the mound Jamie Moyer (9-9, 4.88), who is coming off a lost against the Cubs on July 15, where he pitched only three innings, giving up six runs on five hits, while striking out a batter, in the Phils’ 12-6 lost. In his last three starts, his record is 0-3, as he pitched fourteen and a third innings, giving up fourteen runs, thirteen of which were earned, on seventeen hits and three walks, while he struck out twelve. His will be going for his tenth win for the fourth time, hoping that this time he will actually get the win. The Cards will counter with Chris Carpenter (10-3, 3.16), who is coming off a win over the Dodgers on July 15, as he went eight innings, giving up a run on four hits, while striking out six, in the Cards’ 7-1 win. In his last three starts, his record is 1-2, as he pitched seventeen inning, giving up thirteen runs, twelve of which were earned, on twenty-two hits and four walks, while he struck out fourteen. He will be trying to keep the Phils in their current miserable state. The Phils have now lost four of their first five games in the second half. The offense is starting to hit, and score runs, but the starting pitching is now starting to get bad. What in the bleep have happen to the team that was suppose to be the beast of the National League? I do not know about the rest of you, but this is starting to feel more and more like 1979. If it is, I’m hoping 2011 will be like 1980, without the need for a Dallas Green type of manager at the helm.
