The Phils then tied the game up at two-all in their half of the second as, with one man on, and with nobody out, John Mayberry, Jr. hits an RBI single, scoring Hunter Pence, who had started the inning off with a double. The game then became a pitchers’ duel between the Phils’ starter Cliff Lee, who only gave up only two more hits after the homer to Goldschmidt, and one more walk after the walk to Young, for the next five innings, while striking out a total of seven batters, and D-backs’ starter Joe Saunders, who would give up no more hits during the next four innings that he’d pitched, while walking a total of three Phils, as he struck out three. The Phils then retook the lead in the seventh as, with two men on, and with nobody out, Wilson Valdez hits a two-run double, scoring Pence, who had earlier walked, then went to third base on Mayberry’s single, and Mayberry, who had just singled, giving the Phils a 4-2 lead. The Phils then made it a 5-2 lead as, with a runner now on third, as Valdez moved up a base on Brian Schneider’s sacrifice bunt, 5-4, and with one man out, pinch hitter Ben Francisco hits a sacrifice fly, scoring Valdez. The Phils then broke the game wide open in the eighth as, with two men on, and with nobody out, Ryan Howard, who had started the inning off with a single, then stopped at second base on Pence’s single, scored from second base on Mayberry’s infield single, as third baseman Cody Ransom committed a throwing error, giving the Phils a 6-2 lead, while Pence, who had just singled, would stop at second base. Two batters later, after a force attempt throwing error by relief pitcher Brad Ziegler on a Valdez grounder loaded up the bases, as Pence beat out Ziegler’s throw to third, while Mayberry would stop at second base, and Valdez would be safe at first, Schneider made it a 7-2 Phils’ lead as he hits an RBI single, scoring Pence, while both Mayberry and Valdez would move up a base, leaving the bases still loaded. Two more batters later, with the bases still loaded, and now with one man out, Rollins hits a sacrifice fly, scoring Mayberry, making it an 8-2 Phils’ lead. The Phils then took a 9-2 lead as Shane Victorino hits an RBI double, scoring Valdez, while sending Schneider on to third. That would be the final score as Ryan Madson easily handled the D-backs in the ninth.

The Phils took the lead in the first as, with two men on, and with two men out, Hunter Pence hits an RBI single, scoring Jimmy Rollins, who had earlier doubled, giving the Phils a 1-0 lead, while sending Chase Utley, who had earlier walked, over to third, as Pablo Sandoval committed a miss catch error on Carlos Beltran’s throw to third base. The Phils then took a 2-0 lead as Utley scored on Eli Whiteside’s passed ball. That would remain the score for the next seven and a half innings, as the Giants’ starter Matt Cain and the Phils’ starter Cole Hamels would be involved in a pitcher’s duel as Cain would allow only two more man on base via a single and a walk, while striking out eight batters, while Cole would allow only six hits, as he is helped out of trouble in both the first and the fourth innings by a strikeout, one of five, and two doubleplays, and by a pop up with two men on in the eighth. After Raul Ibanez flied out to left for the inning’s first out, Dom Brown followed with a single to right, his second hit of the night, moving Victorino up to second base. The runners then both moved up a base on a ground out to first by Brian Schneider, who had just returned from the DL, putting runners on second and third, with two men out. The Cards took the lead in the fifth as, with the bases loaded, via singles to Yadier Molina, Daniel Descalsco, with Molina stopping at second base, and Skip Schumaker, with the runners stopping at third and second base, and with one man out, Ryan Theriot hits into an RBI force out, 5-4, forcing out Schumaker at second base, as Molina scored, as Placido Polanco was slow getting the ball out of his glove, giving the Cards a 1-0 lead, while Descalsco would move up to second base, as Theriot would beat the throw to first. The Phils would tie the game up at one-all in the seventh as, with two men on, and with two men out, pinch hitter Ross Gload hits an RBI single, knocking in Raul Ibanez, who had earlier walked, then went to second base on Carlos Ruiz’s single, crossing the plate before Ruiz, who had earlier singled, was tagged out between second and third by third baseman Descalsco, who had just cut off Matt Holliday’s throw to the plate, for the inning’s final out. Francisco then gave the Phils a 3-2 lead with an RBI single, knocking in Utley, while moving up both Howard and Valdez, leaving the bases still loaded. LaRussa then replaced Tallet with Miguel Batista, who proceeded to walk Ruiz on five pitches, forcing in Howard as the Phils took a 4-2 lead, while both Valdez and Francisco moved up a base, the bases remaining loaded. Michael Martinez is then sent up to pinch hit for Michael Stutes, and proceeded to take a walk, forcing in a run, as Valdez scores, giving the Phils a 5-2 lead, while sending Francisco up to third base, and Ruiz over to second, as the Phils batted around. The Phils took the lead in the second as Ryan Howard hits a lead-off home run, his eighth home run of the year, giving the Phils a 1-0 lead. After turning back a pair of bases loaded threats by the Phils in the second and third innings, the Marlins tied the game up at one-all in the third as, with two men on, and with one man out, Emilio Bonifacio hits a sacrifice fly, scoring Josh Johnson, who had earlier walked, then went to third on Chris Coghlan’s double, while Coghlan, who had just doubled, would move up to third. The game would then become a pitchers’ duel between Johnson, who would pitch six innings, only giving up one run on six hits and three walks, while striking out seven, as he would pitch himself out of trouble early in the game, and Phils’ starter Roy Halladay, who in the first seven innings, would also give up just a run, on three hits and two walks, while striking out eight. The Marlins then took the lead in the eight as Omar Infante would reach base on a Jimmy Rollins throwing error, before moving up to second base on a Halladay wild pitch. Infante would then move up to third on a ground out, 4-3, by pinch hitter Osvaldo Martinez. Coghlan then followed with an RBI single, scoring Infante and giving the Marlins a 2-1 lead. That would be the final score as Leo Nunez collected his twelfth save of the season by pitching a scoreless ninth, getting Shane Victorino to ground out, 3-1, to end the game.
Roy Halladay (5-2, 2.05) took the lost as he gave up two run, only one of which was earned, on five hits and two walks, while striking out nine. Josh Johnson received a no-decision, as he went six innings, giving up a run on six hits and three walks, while striking out seven. Michael Dunn (3-2, 1.26) gets the win as he pitched a 1-2-3 inning, striking out a batter. Leo Nunez recorded his twelfth save of the year as he pitched a scoreless inning, walking a batter, while striking out one.
The Phils had just six hits with Raul Ibanez leading the team with two hits, a single and a double, as he raised his batting average to .231. Jimmy Rollins (Single), Shane Victorino (Single), Ryan Howard (Home Run, RBI) and Ben Francisco (Single), had the other four Phils’ hits, as the offense was not able to get the key hit when they had Josh Johnson on the ropes in the early going.
The Phils (23-12, 1st) will conclude their three-game set with the Marlins (21-14, 2nd) with a night game at Sun Life Stadium. The game will begin at 7:10 pm EDT. The Phils will send to the mound Cliff Lee (2-3, 3.69), who is coming off a lost against the Braves on May 6, as he pitched seven innings, giving up three runs on nine hits and a walk, while striking out sixteen in the Phils’ 5-0 lost. He will once again try for his third win of the season, while hoping that the offense will decide to help him this time. The Mets took the lead in the fourth as, with two men on, and with nobody out, Carlos Beltran hits an RBI single, knocking in Daniel Murphy, who had earlier singled, and then moved up to second on David Wright’s infield single, beating out Placido Polanco’s throw to second base, giving the Mets a 1-0 lead, while sending Wright, who had just singled, up to second base. Roy Halladay would then get out of trouble by getting Jason Bay to fly out to center field for the first out, as Wright would move up to third, then get Ike Davis to foul out to the third baseman for the inning’s second out, before ending the inning by getting Josh Thole to ground out, 6-3. The game would then be a pitcher’s duel, with Halladay giving up just one run for seven innings on six hits, as he struck out seven, helped along by a double play, while Mets’ starter Jon Niese kept the Phils off-balance for six innings, scattering four hits and one walk, while striking out two. The Phils would then tie the game up at one-all in the seventh as John Mayberry, Jr. hits a lead-off home run, his first home run of the year. The Phils then took the lead five batters later as, with the bases loaded, via a single by Wilson Valdez, a walk by Dane Sardinha, sending Valdez to second base, and a single by Shane Victorino, sending Valdez on to third, and Sardinha to second, and with one man out, Polanco hits a sacrifice fly, scoring Valdez, giving the Phils a 2-1 lead, while sending Sardinha on to third. That would be more than enough for Roy Halladay, as he would give up only one more hit, and a walk, being helped by a double play in the eighth and his eighth strikeout in the ninth, before ending the game by getting Davis to ground out, 3-1.

Jon Niese (1-4, 4.71) took the lost as he went six and one-third innings, giving up two runs on six hits and two walks, while striking out three. Taylor Buchholz pitched two-thirds of an inning, giving up a hit. Tim Byrdak pitched a third of an inning, getting out the only man he would face. Jason Isringhausen pitched two-thirds of an inning, giving up a walk.
The Phils had only seven hits in the game, with Placido Polanco, with a single and a double, while knocking in a run with a sac fly, and John Mayberry, Jr. with a single and a home run, with an RBI, both leading the team with two hits apiece. Shane Victorino (Single), Jimmy Rollins (Single) and Wilson Valdez (Single) had the other three Phils’ hits, with Valdez ending a hitless streak. With his two hits, Polanco now has 41 hits in April, establishing a new team hits record for the month, while the team won their eighteenth game, establishing a new team wins record for the month.
The Phils (18-8, 1st) will conclude their three-game series with the Mets (11-16, 5th) tomorrow, with a night game that will be televised by ESPN. The game will be played at Citizens Bank Park and will start at 8:05 pm EDT.
