The Phils leave the evil empire on a high note as they defeat the Yanks again, 7-1.
Behind the surprisingly strong pitching of Kyle Kendrick, the Phils leave new Yankee Stadium on a high note as they defeat the World Champions Yankees, 7-1, giving them a 3-3 spilt on the road, after having been crushed in two straight games during the weekend by the BoSox.
The Phils took a 1-0 lead in the fourth as, with two men on base, and with one man out, Ryan Howard hits an RBI single, knocking in Shane Victorino, who had earlier singled and then reached second base on a force out attempt as Ramiro Pena committed a fielding error on a Placido Polanco grounder, while Placido would stop at second base. The Phils would increase their lead in the fifth as, with a runner on second, and with two men out, Victorino hits a two-run home run, his eleventh home run of the year, knocking in Carlos Ruiz, who had earlier walked and then went to third on Wilson Valdez’s ground out, 6-3, to give the Phils a 3-0 lead. The Yanks got a run back in the sixth as, with two men on, and with two men out, Robinson Cano hits an RBI single, knocking in Mark Teixeira, who had earlier walked, and then went to second base on Alex Rodriguez’s single, making it a 3-1 Phils’ lead, while sending Rodriguez up to second. The Phils then put the game away in the ninth by playing like the team they were back in April and May before meeting the Red Sox. The Phils first increased their lead as, with a runner on second, and with nobody out, Valdez hits an RBI single, shooting it through the hole just vacated by shortstop Derek Jeter when the Yanks expected the Phils to sacrifice Ruiz, who had earlier doubled, to third, scoring Ruiz, and giving the Phils a 4-1 lead. Three batters later, with the bases loaded, via a walk to Victorino, after Valdez had stolen second base, and a walk to Chase Utley, moving both Valdez and Victorino up a base, and still with nobody out, Polanco hits a sacrifice fly for the first out of the inning, scoring Valdez, to give the Phils a 5-1 lead, and sending Victorino to third. The next batter, Howard, with runners on the corners, and now with one man out, would make it a 6-1 Phils’ lead by hitting a sacrifice fly, scoring Victorino. Two batters later, the Phils would make it a 7-1 lead as, with two men on, and now with two men out, Raul Ibanez hits an RBI double, scoring Utley, who had earlier stole second base, while sending Jayson Werth, who had just walked, over to third. That would be the final score as Jose Contreras and J.C. Romero would combine for a 1-2-3 ninth inning.

Victorino’s two hits were a two-run home run and a single, knocking in two runs, while Ruiz’s two hits were both doubles, as he scored two runs. Blanton will be trying to recover from his pounding at the hands of the BoSox, like Moyer did on Wednesday night. The Twins will counter with Nick Blackburn (6-3, 4.96), who is coming off a no-decision against the Braves on June 12, where he pitched seven innings, giving up two runs on six hits and two walks, while he struck out two, in the Twins’ 3-2 lost. He will be gunning for his seventh win of the season. The Phils will be trying for this third win in a row, while trying to even up their record in interleague play.

Three batters later, with the bases loaded, via a walk to Brian Schneider, sending Dobbs to second, and an infield single to Wilson Valdez, moving both Dobbs and Schneider up a base, and with still one man out, Shane Victorino hits a three-run triple, scoring Dobbs, Schneider and Valdez, giving the Phils a 4-0 lead. The Yankees got a run back in their half of the second as, with one man out, Robinson Cano hits a solo home run, his fourteen home run of the year, making it a 4-1 Phils’ lead. The Phils got the run back in the third as Ryan Howard hits a lead-off home run, his eleventh home run of the season, to give the Phils a 5-1 lead. The next batter, Jayson Werth, made it a 6-1 Phils’ lead as he hits his eleventh home run of the season, giving the Phils’ their first back-to-back home run display of the season. The Phils threathen to add to their lead in the fourth as they loaded the bases, via a walk to Victorino, who then stole second base, a Chase Utley single, sending Vitctorino to third, and an intentional walk to Werth, with two men out, but they were turned back as Ibanez grounded out, 4-3. That would be the last time that the Phils’ offense would do anything that night, as Yankees’ relief pitching would shut them down for the rest of the night. Meanwhile, the Yanks would cut the Phils’ lead down to 6-2 as, with one man out in the fifth, Jorge Posada hits a solo home run, his ninth home run of the season. After that, Phils’ starter Jamie Moyer would only give up a walk to Alex Rodriguez in the seventh, who is then wiped out at second as Cano hits into an inning ending 5-4-3 double play, and one more hit, an infield single to Kevin Russo in the eighth. The Yankess then tried to get back into the game in the ninth as, with a runner on second, and with two men out, Rodriguez his an RBI double, knocking in Mark Teixeira, who had earlier walked, and then went to second on defensive indifference, making it a 6-3 Phils’ lead. Two batters later, with runners on the corners as Russo followed Rodriguez with a single, moving A-Rod to third, and still with two men out, Brad Lidge finally ended the game by striking out Posada swinging.

He will be trying to repeat his world series performance against the Phils. The Phils then took the lead one batter later as, with one man on base, and with still one man out, Raul Ibanez hits a two-run home run to right, his fourth home run of the year, scoring Werth before him, giving the Phils a 3-1 lead. Two batters later, with a man once again on second, and with still only one man out, Juan Castro hits an RBI single to right field, scoring Ben Francisco, who had earlier doubled, making it a 4-1 Phils’ lead. That would be the score until the top of the ninth, as first Phils’ starter Cole Hamels, and then reliever Jose Contreras in the eighth inning, would pitch themselves out of jams by getting BoSox batters to hit into a couple of double plays. Then, with a runner on third, and with one man out, Francisco hit a sacrifice fly, scoring Werth, who had earlier walked, stoled second, and then stole third, giving the Phils a 5-1 lead. Then, in the bottom of the ninth, with David Ortiz on third, via a double and a fly out to right by Mike Lowell, and with one man out, Ortiz scored on a Carlos Ruiz’s pass ball, making it a 5-2 Phils’ lead. Three batters later, with a runner on second, and with two men out, Daniel Nava hits an RBI single, knocking in J.D. Drew, who had earlier walked, and had gone to second on defensive indifference, making it a 5-3 Phils’ lead. After being held scoreless during the Mets’ series, the Phils finally end their thirty straight innings without scoring a run with a run in the fourth, before going on to defeat the fish, 3-2.
The Marlins took a quick 2-0 lead in the third as, with runners on the corners, and with two men out, Phils’ starter Kyle Kendrick committed a two-base throwing error on a Hanley Ramirez ground ball back to him, as his errant throw gets past the outstretched arm of first baseman Ryan Howard, allowing both Chris Coghlan, who had earlier singled, and then went to third on Gaby Sanchez’s single, and Sanchez, who had just singled, to score, while allowing Ramirez to reach second base. What, at first, looks like the start of another bad night for the slumping Phils would instead turn around in the fourth. In that inning, with a man on first and with nobody out, Raul Ibanez hits an RBI triple, the first Phil RBI since Ross Gload’s pinch hit home run against the Bosox on Sunday, as the ball shoot pass Cameron Maybin in center field, scoring Howard, who had just singled, to cut the Marlins’ lead to 2-1. The Phils then tied up the game at two-all in the fifth as, with one man on, and with two outs, Howard hits an RBI single, knocking in Chase Utley, who had earlier walked, and then stole second. In a wild game, the Phils hold on in the ninth as Jose Contreras pitches himself out of a two on, two out, jam, to defeat the Cubs, 5-4.
The Phils took a quick 1-0 lead as, with two men out, Chase Utley hits a solo home run, his tenth home run of the season. The Cubs tied the game up at one-all in the fifth as, with a runner on third, and with one man out, Starlin Castro hits an RBI single, scoring Alfonso Soriano, who had earlier doubled, and then went to third on a Mike Fontenot ground out, 3-unassisted. The Phils regained the lead in the sixth as, with two men on, and with two men out, Jimmy Rollins hit a three-run bomb, knocking in Placido Polanco, who had earlier doubled, and Utley, who had just walked, giving the Phils a 4-1 lead. The Cubs then comes back in the seventh as, with nobody out, Derrek Lee hits a lead-off home run, his fifth home run of the year, making it a 4-2 Phils’ lead. Four batters later, with the bases loaded via a walk to Soriano and singles to Fontenot and Castro, and with one man out, pinch hitter Tyler Colvin hits a sacrifice fly, knocking in Soriano, making it a 4-3 Phils’ lead, while sending Fontenot to third. The Cubs then tied it up at four-all in the eighth as, with nobody out, Kosuke Fukudome hits a lead-off home run, his sixth home run of the season. The Phils retook the lead in their half of the eighth as, with two men on, and with two men out, Raul Ibanez hits an RBI single, scoring Utley, who had earlier walked, and had moved up to second on Rollins’ walk, giving the Phils a 5-4 lead, while sending Rollins, who had just walked, over to third. That would be the final score as Jose Contreras would records his second save of the season by pitching himself out of a two on, no outs jam by first striking out Castro and Aramis Ramirez and then by getting Geovany Soto to foul out to first to end the ballgame.
Joe Blanton receives a no-decision as he pitches seven strong innings, giving up three runs on five hits and a walk, while striking out three. Antonio Bastardo is credited with his first blown save as he gives up a home run to the only batter that he would face. Danys Baez picks up the win as he pitches a scoreless inning, striking out a batter. His record is now 2-1 with a 5.00 ERA. Jose Contreras records his second save of the season as he pitches a scoreless inning, giving up a hit and hitting a batter, while striking out two. Ryan Dempster also receives a no-decision as he pitches six innings, giving up four runs on five hits and a walk, while striking out three. James Russell and Jeff Stevens combines for one and a third scoreless inning, giving up a hit (Russell) between them. John Grabow took the lost as he pitches two-thirds of an inning, giving up a run on a hit and two walks. His record is now 0-3 with a 8.44 ERA.
The Phils had seven hits in the game, with Placido Polanco and Raul Ibanez having two hits a piece, with Polanco’s hits being a double and a single, with him scoring a run, while Ibanez’s hits were both singles, with him knocking in a run. Chase Utley, Jimmy Rollins and pinch hitter Ben Francisco having the other three Phils’ hits, with Utley and Rollins’ hits being home runs, Utley’s a solo shot, and Rollins’ a three-run dinger, while Francisco’s hit was a single.
The Phils (25-15, 1st National League East) will conclude their home stand with three interleague series games with the Red Sox (22-20, 4th American League East). The game will be played at Citizens Bank Park and will start at 7:05 pm Eastern. The Phils will send to the mound Cole Hamels (4-2, 4.29), who is coming off a win against the Brewers on May 16, when he pitched six and two-third innings, giving up two runs on six hits and three walks, while he struck out three, in the Phils’ 4-2 win. Hamels will be going for his third win in a row and his third strong start in his last four. The Bosox will counter with John Lackey (4-2, 4.86), who is coming off a lost to the Tigers on May 16, as he pitched seven innings, giving up five runs on nine hits and four walks, while striking out four, in the Bosox’s 5-1 lost. He will be trying to make the Phils’ night a long one. The Phils will be trying to start Interleague Play this year on a high note.
The Hall of Fame has come calling and…
Has just announced that they have elected Andre Dawson with 77.9 of the votes or 420 of the 539 ballots. Dawson, who spent 21 seasons (1976-1996) in the majors playing mainly both center and right field with the Montreal Expos (now the Washington Nationals), the Chicago Cubs, Boston Red Sox and Florida Marlins, batted .279 while amassing 2774 hits, 438 home runs and 1591 rbis, was an eight time all-star (1981-83, 1987-91), won the gold glove eight times (1980-85, 1987-8), won the silver slugger award four times (1980-81, 1983, 1987), won the National League MVP in 1987 and the NL Rookie of the Year Award in 1977. Dawson will be inducted into the Hall on July 25, along with manager Whitey Herzog and umpire Doug Harvey, who were both elected last month by the Veterans Committee.

Jamie Moyer picks up his eleventh win of the season after pitching six shut out innings for his first win in relief since pitching in relief for the Red Sox on May 15, 1996, as he took over for Pedro Martinez, who was taken out of the game after pitching only three innings because of a sixty-six minutes rain delay, as the Phils defeat the D-backs, 5-1.
The D-backs took the lead in the first as their lead-off man, Stephen Drew, hits a 3-2 changeup into right field for his eleventh home run of the season, giving the D-backs a 1-0 lead. After Ryan Roberts followed with a single, Pedro Martinez buckled down, and then got the next eight batters out, starting with a double play ball, 1-6-3, off of the bat of Gerardo Parra, wiping out Roberts at second base. The Phillies, meantime, blew opportunities to score runs in the first two innings against D-backs’ starter Jon Garland. Then in the bottom of the third, the rains came down in buckets, delaying the ballgame for sixty-six minutes. When play resumed, the Phillies’ offense went to work. With a man on base, and with two men out, Jayson Werth tied the ballgame up at one-all with an RBI double, knocking in Chase Utley, who had earlier been hit by the pitch. Then two batters later, the Phils took the lead on a Pedro Feliz RBI single, scoring Werth, making it 2-1 Phils, while sending Raul Ibanez, who had earlier been intentionally walked, over to third, before Feliz would move on up to second on D-backs’ left fielder’s Roberts throwing error. Carlos Ruiz then made it 3-1 Phils as he hits an RBI single to right, scoring Ibanez. But, Feliz, who was following Ibanez, was tagged out at the plate, 9-2, for the inning’s final out. In the top of the fourth, the Phils sent out Jamie Moyer in relief of Martinez. After giving up a single to Garland, Moyer would proceed to get out the next eleven batters before giving up another hit. In the meantime, the Phils would add to their lead. In the fifth, the Phils made it 4-1 as, with one out, Werth hits a solo home run, his career high twenty-fifth home run of the year. The Phils then made it 5-1 in the sixth as Carlos Ruiz started the inning off by hitting a solo home run, his sixth home run of the year. That, and later singles to Moyer, his second hit of the night, and to Shane Victorino, with one man out, would lead to Garland’s exit, and his replacement by Daniel Schlereth. Schlereth proceeded to throw a wild pitch that would move Moyer up to third and Victorino up to second base. After Utley is walked to load the bases, Schlereth is able to get out of the inning by first striking out Ryan Howard, and then getting Werth to ground out, 5-3. In the seventh, Moyer would give up his second hit of the night, a two-out single to Miguel Montero. But he then gets out the next seven batters, ending the game as Parra lined out to Werth for the final out, recording the win.
Pedro Martinez received a no-decision, as he pitched only three innings, being taken out after the rain delay, as he gave up only a run on two hits, as he struck out three. Jamie Moyer picked up the win in relief, as he went six strong innings, giving up just two hits, while striking out five. His record is now 11-9 with a 5.22 ERA. Jon Garland took the lost as he pitched five and a third innings, giving up five runs on eleven hits, a hit batter and two walks, as he struck out three. His record is now 6-11 with a 4.42 ERA. David Schlereth, Leo Rosales and Jon Rauch combined for three and two-thirds shut out innings, giving up just one hit (Rauch) and two walks (Schlereth and Rosales with a walk each), while they struck out three (one batter for each pitcher).
The Phils had twelve hits in the game, with Carlos Ruiz leading the way with three hits, one of which was a solo home run, scoring two RBIs, as he raised his batting average to .235. He was followed by Shane Victorino, Jayson Werth, and, of all people, Jamie Moyer, with two hits each, with Werth’s two hits being a double and a solo home run, also knocking in two RBIs. Jimmy Rollins, Chase Utley and Pedro Feliz each followed with a hit, with Feliz knocking in the final Phils’ run. Although scoring several runs last night, the Phils are still having problems scoring runners in scoring position, as they left the bases loaded in both the first and sixth innings.
The Phils (67-49, 1st National League East) continue their short home stand tonight with the Diamondbacks (54-66, 4th National League West) with a night game. The game will be played at Citizens Bank Park and will start at 7:05 pm Eastern. The Phils will send to the mound their new ace Cliff Lee (10-9 (3-0), 2.86 (1.13)), who is coming off a strong start against the Cubs on August 13, as he pitched eight innings, giving up only one run on six hits and three walks, while he struck out eight, in the Phils’ 6-1 win. He will try to make it four straight wins since joining the Phils from the Indians, while giving the Phils a series win at home. The D-backs will try to counter with Dan Haren (12-7, 2.50), who is coming off a win against the Dodgers on August 14, where he went eight innings, giving up a run on six hits and two walks, while striking out eight, in the D-backs’ 4-1 win. He will be trying to see if he can derail the Lee’ Express. The Phils will be trying to give Lee some more run support while Lee will be seeing if he can continue his dominance of National League hitters.
