The Phils leave the evil empire on a high note as they defeat the Yanks again, 7-1.

Behind the surprisingly strong pitching of Kyle Kendrick, the Phils leave new Yankee Stadium on a high note as they defeat the World Champions Yankees, 7-1, giving them a 3-3 spilt on the road, after having been crushed in two straight games during the weekend by the BoSox.

The Phils took a 1-0 lead in the fourth as, with two men on base, and with one man out, Ryan Howard hits an RBI single, knocking in Shane Victorino, who had earlier singled and then reached second base on a force out attempt as Ramiro Pena committed a fielding error on a Placido Polanco grounder, while Placido would stop at second base. The Phils would increase their lead in the fifth as, with a runner on second, and with two men out, Victorino hits a two-run home run, his eleventh home run of the year, knocking in Carlos Ruiz, who had earlier walked and then went to third on Wilson Valdez’s ground out, 6-3, to give the Phils a 3-0 lead. The Yanks got a run back in the sixth as, with two men on, and with two men out, Robinson Cano hits an RBI single, knocking in Mark Teixeira, who had earlier walked, and then went to second base on Alex Rodriguez’s single, making it a 3-1 Phils’ lead, while sending Rodriguez up to second. The Phils then put the game away in the ninth by playing like the team they were back in April and May before meeting the Red Sox. The Phils first increased their lead as, with a runner on second, and with nobody out, Valdez hits an RBI single, shooting it through the hole just vacated by shortstop Derek Jeter when the Yanks expected the Phils to sacrifice Ruiz, who had earlier doubled, to third, scoring Ruiz, and giving the Phils a 4-1 lead. Three batters later, with the bases loaded, via a walk to Victorino, after Valdez had stolen second base, and a walk to Chase Utley, moving both Valdez and Victorino up a base, and still with nobody out, Polanco hits a sacrifice fly for the first out of the inning, scoring Valdez, to give the Phils a 5-1 lead, and sending Victorino to third. The next batter, Howard, with runners on the corners, and now with one man out, would make it a 6-1 Phils’ lead by hitting a sacrifice fly, scoring Victorino. Two batters later, the Phils would make it a 7-1 lead as, with two men on, and now with two men out, Raul Ibanez hits an RBI double, scoring Utley, who had earlier stole second base, while sending Jayson Werth, who had just walked, over to third. That would be the final score as Jose Contreras and J.C. Romero would combine for a 1-2-3 ninth inning.

Kyle Kendrick gets the win as he pitches a surprising seven strong innings against the Bronx Bombers, giving up just one run on four hits and two walks, striking out three. His record is now 4-2 with an ERA of 4.48. Jose Contreras receives his fifth hold of the year as he pitches one and one-third scoreless innings, as he strikes out one. J.C. Romero pitches two-thirds of an inning, getting out the two men that he would face. Andy Pettitte took the lost as he pitches seven innings, giving up three runs on six hits and three walks, while striking out seven. His record is now 8-2 with an ERA of 2.47. David Robertson pitches a 1-2-3 inning, striking out a batter. Joba Chamberlain pitches to three batters, giving up three runs on two hits and a walk. Damaso Marte pitches two-thirds of an inning, giving up a run on no hits and two walks. Chan Ho Park pitches a third of an inning, as he gives up two hits.

The Phils had ten hits in the game, with Shane Victorino and Carlos Ruiz leading the team with two hits apiece. Victorino’s two hits were a two-run home run and a single, knocking in two runs, while Ruiz’s two hits were both doubles, as he scored two runs. Placido Polanco, Ryan Howard, Jayson Werth, Raul Ibanez, Ben Francisco and Wilson Valdez  had the other six Phils’ hits, with Polanco, Howard, Werth, Francisco and Valdez’s hits being singles, with Polanco and Valdez knocking in a run each, Polanco’s via a sac fly, while Howard knocked in two, with one via a sac fly, while Ibanez’s hit was a double, scoring a run. It would appear that the Phils’ offense is almost back. The question now is can they maintain the momentum from their last four games? Only time will tell.

The Phils (34-30, 3rd NL East) will start a nine-game home stand beginning with a three-game weekend series with the Twins (38-28, 1st AL Central), starting with a night game tonight. The game will be played at Citizens Bank Park, and will start at 7:05 pm Eastern. The Phils will send to the mound Joe Blanton (1-5, 7.28), who is coming off a lost against the Red Sox on June 12, where he got bombed by the BoSox for nine runs on thirteen hits and a walk, while striking out four, in four innings of work, in the Phils’ 10-2 lost. Blanton will be trying to recover from his pounding at the hands of the BoSox, like Moyer did on Wednesday night. The Twins will counter with Nick Blackburn (6-3, 4.96), who is coming off a no-decision against the Braves on June 12, where he pitched seven innings, giving up two runs on six hits and two walks, while he struck out two, in the Twins’ 3-2 lost. He will be gunning for his seventh win of the season. The Phils will be trying for this third win in a row, while trying to even up their record in interleague play.

Jamie Moyer wins career victory no. 265, his first in the New Yankee Stadium, as the Phils defeat the World Champs, 6-3.

Behind the pitching of Jamie Moyer, who won his 265 career win, and his first in the new Yankee Stadium, the Phils’ bat struck long enough to defeat the World Champions Yankees, 6-3.

The Phils’ bat erupted for four runs in the second inning to take the lead. The Phils scored their first run, taking a 1-0 lead as, with a runner on second, and with one man out, Greg Dobbs hits an RBI single, scoring Raul Ibanez, who had earlier walked, and then stole second. Three batters later, with the bases loaded, via a walk to Brian Schneider, sending Dobbs to second, and an infield single to Wilson Valdez, moving both Dobbs and Schneider up a base, and with still one man out, Shane Victorino hits a three-run triple, scoring Dobbs, Schneider and Valdez, giving the Phils a 4-0 lead. The Yankees got a run back in their half of the second as, with one man out, Robinson Cano hits a solo home run, his fourteen home run of the year, making it a 4-1 Phils’ lead. The Phils got the run back in the third as Ryan Howard hits a lead-off home run, his eleventh home run of the season, to give the Phils a 5-1 lead. The next batter, Jayson Werth, made it a 6-1 Phils’ lead as he hits his eleventh home run of the season, giving the Phils’ their first back-to-back home run display of the season. The Phils threathen to add to their lead in the fourth as they loaded the bases, via a walk to Victorino, who then stole second base, a Chase Utley single, sending Vitctorino to third, and an intentional walk to Werth, with two men out, but they were turned back as Ibanez grounded out, 4-3. That would be the last time that the Phils’ offense would do anything that night, as Yankees’ relief pitching would shut them down for the rest of the night. Meanwhile, the Yanks would cut the Phils’ lead down to 6-2 as, with one man out in the fifth, Jorge Posada hits a solo home run, his ninth home run of the season. After that, Phils’ starter Jamie Moyer would only give up a walk to Alex Rodriguez in the seventh, who is then wiped out at second as Cano hits into an inning ending 5-4-3 double play, and one more hit, an infield single to Kevin Russo in the eighth. The Yankess then tried to get back into the game in the ninth as, with a runner on second, and with two men out, Rodriguez his an RBI double, knocking in Mark Teixeira, who had earlier walked, and then went to second on defensive indifference, making it a 6-3 Phils’ lead. Two batters later, with runners on the corners as Russo followed Rodriguez with a single, moving A-Rod to third, and still with two men out, Brad Lidge finally ended the game by striking out Posada swinging.

Jamie Moyer gets the win, the 265th of his career, tying him for 38th place on the all-time wins list with Jim McCormick, as he went eight innings, giving up two runs on three hits and a walk, while he struck out five, as he recovers from the shelling that he had received in Boston the previous Friday night. His record is now 7-6 with a 4.76 ERA. Brad Lidge pitches an inning, giving up a run on two hits and a walk, as he strikes out three. A.J. Burnett took the lost as he pitches only three and a third innings, giving up six runs on six hits and four walks, while striking out only three. His record is now 6-5 with a 4.33 ERA. Boone Logan and Chad Gaudin combine for five and two-thirds scoreless innings, giving up only a walk (Logan), while striking out six Phils (three each).

The Phils had only six hits in the game, with Shane Victorino, Chase Utley, Ryan Howard, Jayson Werth, Greg Dobbs and Wilson Valdez each getting a hit. Victorino’s hit was a triple, knocking in three runs. Howard and Werth’s hits were solo home runs. Utley, Dobbs and Valdez’s hits were singles, with Dobbs’ hit knocking in a run, while Valdez’s was an infield single. While the Phils’ offense appears to be breaking out of its slump, it is still not putting together the sustain attack that it was putting on the field in April and early May. Hopefully it will not be too much longer before that feared attack finally returns to make the rest of the NL squirm.

The Phils (33-30, 3rd NL East) will conclude their three games series with the Yankees (41-24, 1st-T AL East) with a night game at the new Yankee Stadium. The game will begin at 7:05 pm Eastern. The Phils will send to the mound Kyle Kendrick (3-2, 4.80), who last pitched on June 11 in a relief appearance against the Red Sox, as he pitched two scoreless innings, giving up just two hits and a walk, while striking out two, in the Phils’ 12-2 lost to the BoSox. He will be trying for his first win since his six innings performance against the Marlins on May 28, in the Phils’ 3-2 win over the fish. He will be trying to build on his good relief appearance, after having pitched two straight no-decisions, one good, one bad. The Yankees with counter will Andy Pettittee (8-1, 2.46), who is coming off a win against the Astros on June 11, as he went seven and one-third innings, giving up two runs on four hits and a walk, while striking out four, in the Yanks’ 4-3 win. He will be trying to repeat his world series performance against the Phils. The Phils will be trying to win the series, while hoping for a measure of revenge against Pettitte for the two world series’ defeats.

The Phils leave Boston with a win as they defeat the BoSox, 5-3.

After being crushed in the previous two games of the series, the Phils leave Boston with a victory, as they are able to hold on to defeat the Red Sox, 5-3.

Boston took an early lead in the second as Adrian Beltre hits an 0-2 cutter deep into left field for a lead-off home run, his ninth home run of the season, to give the BoSox a 1-0 lead. The Phils tied the game up at one-all in the fourth as, with a runner on second, and with one man out, Jayson Werth hits an RBI single into center field, knocking in Ryan Howard, who had earlier doubled. The Phils then took the lead one batter later as, with one man on base, and with still one man out, Raul Ibanez hits a two-run home run to right, his fourth home run of the year, scoring Werth before him, giving the Phils a 3-1 lead. Two batters later, with a man once again on second, and with still only one man out, Juan Castro hits an RBI single to right field, scoring Ben Francisco, who had earlier doubled, making it a 4-1 Phils’ lead. That would be the score until the top of the ninth, as first Phils’ starter Cole Hamels, and then reliever Jose Contreras in the eighth inning, would pitch themselves out of jams by getting BoSox batters to hit into a couple of double plays. Then, with a runner on third, and with one man out, Francisco hit a sacrifice fly, scoring Werth, who had earlier walked, stoled second, and then stole third, giving the Phils a 5-1 lead. Then, in the bottom of the ninth, with David Ortiz on third, via a double and a fly out to right by Mike Lowell, and with one man out, Ortiz scored on a Carlos Ruiz’s pass ball, making it a 5-2 Phils’ lead. Three batters later, with a runner on second, and with two men out, Daniel Nava hits an RBI single, knocking in J.D. Drew, who had earlier walked, and had gone to second on defensive indifference, making it a 5-3 Phils’ lead. But that would be the final score as Brad Lidge records his fourth save of the season by getting Marco Scutaro to pop out to third for the final out.

Cole Hamels gets the win as he pitches seven strong innings, giving up just one run on five hits and two walks, while striking out eight. His record is now 6-5 with a 3.74 ERA. Romero pitches a third of an inning, giving up two runs on one hit, a walk, and a pass ball. The Phils (32-29, 3rd NL East) have the day off today.

The Phils finally ends their losing streak by defeating the Marlins, 3-2.

After being held scoreless during the Mets’ series, the Phils finally end their thirty straight innings without scoring a run with a run in the fourth, before going on to defeat the fish, 3-2.

The Marlins took a quick 2-0 lead in the third as, with runners on the corners, and with two men out, Phils’ starter Kyle Kendrick committed a two-base throwing error on a Hanley Ramirez ground ball back to him, as his errant throw gets past the outstretched arm of first baseman Ryan Howard, allowing both Chris Coghlan, who had earlier singled, and then went to third on Gaby Sanchez’s single, and Sanchez, who had just singled, to score, while allowing Ramirez to reach second base. What, at first, looks like the start of another bad night for the slumping Phils would instead turn around in the fourth. In that inning, with a man on first and with nobody out, Raul Ibanez hits an RBI triple, the first Phil RBI since Ross Gload’s pinch hit home run against the Bosox on Sunday, as the ball shoot pass Cameron Maybin in center field, scoring Howard, who had just singled, to cut the Marlins’ lead to 2-1. The Phils then tied up the game at two-all in the fifth as, with one man on, and with two outs, Howard hits an RBI single, knocking in Chase Utley, who had earlier walked, and then stole second. The Phils then took the lead in the seventh, their first lead in a week, as, with two men on base, and with one man out, Utley hits an RBI ground out, 6-3, scoring Shane Victorino, who was earlier safe on first on a force out, 4-6, as pinch hitter Ben Francisco, who had earlier walked, was forced out at second, moved up to second on Wilson Valdez’s single, and then stole third as part of a double steal, giving the Phils a 3-2 lead, while Valdez, who had earlier singled, and was the back half of the double steal, went to third. That would be the final score as Jose Contreras records his third save of the season, as he got out of a two on, one out jam, by first striking out Cody Ross and then getting Ronny Paulino to fly out to center.

Kyle Kendrick got the win as he pitches six innings, giving up two unearned runs on five hits, while striking out one. His record is now 3-2 with an ERA of 5.04. Chad Durbin records his seventh hold as he pitches a 1-2-3 inning, striking out a batter. Jose Contreras records his third save of the year as he pitches a scoreless inning, giving up two hits, while striking out two. Chris Volstad took the lost as he pitches seven and one-third innings, giving up three runs on seven hits and three walks, while striking out six. His record is now 3-6 with an ERA of 4.31. Taylor Tankersley and Jorge Sosa combine for two and two-thirds scoreless innings, getting out the eight men that they would face.

The Phils had seven hits in the game, with Wilson Valdez and Ryan Howard leading the team with two hits apiece, all singles, with Howard knocking in a run, while also scoring a run. Raul Ibanez, Ross Gload and Carlos Ruiz had the other three Phils’ hits, with Ibanez’s hit being a triple, knocking in a run, while Gload and Ruiz’s hits were singles. Chase Utley knocks in the other Phil run with a ground out.

The Phils (27-20, 1st) continue their series with the Marlins (24-25, 5th) with a night game. The game will be played at Sun Life Stadium and will start at 7:10 pm Eastern. The Phils will send to the mound their ace Roy Halladay (6-3, 2.22), who is coming off a lost to the Bosox on May 23, when he pitched only five and two-thirds innings, being rocked for six runs on eight hits and two walks, while striking out only one, in the Phils’ 8-3 lost. He’ll be looking for his first win in four starts. The Marlins will counter with their ace Josh Johnson (5-1, 2.43), who is coming off a win against the Chisox on May 23, as he went six innings, giving up only six hits and two walks, in the Marlins’ 13-0 win. He will be shooting for his sixth win of the year. The Phils will be trying to build a new winning streak, while trying to give Doc some much needed offense.

Sunday: Roy Halladay gets crushed by his old nemesis as the Phils lose to the Red Sox, 8-3.

Roy Halladay had an off day Sunday as he got crushed by his old AL nemesis the Red Sox, as the Phils lost to the Red Sox, 8-3.

The Bosox took the lead in the second as, with a runner on third, and with nobody out, J.D. Drew hits an RBI ground out, 3-1, scoring Kevin Youkilis, who had earlier tripled, giving the Bosox a 1-0 lead. The Bosox added to their lead in the fourth as, with the bases loaded, via a single to Victor Martinez, a walk to Youkilis, moving Martinez up to second base, and a single to Drew, moving both Martinez and Youkilis up a base, and with one man out, Greg Dobbs committed a fielding error on an Adrian Beltre grounder that went through his legs, allowing both Martin and Youkilis to score, making it a 3-0 Bosox’s lead, while allowing Drew to reach second and Beltre to be safe at first. The Bosox would then break the game wide open in the sixth. Youkilis made it a 4-0 Bosox’s lead as he hit a lead-off home run, his ninth home run of the season. Three batters later, with runners on the corners, and with one man out, Marco Scutaro hits an RBI single, scoring Drew, who had earlier doubled and had gone to third on Beltre’s single, giving the Bosox a 5-0 lead, while sending Beltre up to second base. Two batters later, the Bosox made it 7-0 as, now with runners on second and third, thanks to a Tim Wakefield sacrifice bunt moving both Beltre and Scutaro up a base, and now with two men out, Jacoby Ellsbury hits a two-run infield single, knocking in both Beltre and Scutaro, with the later running home as Juan Castro, who had fielded the ground ball, threw to third base in the hopes of catching Scutaro coming back to third. The Bosox made it 8-0 in the ninth as, with the bases loaded, via a walk to Dustin Pedroia, a double to Martinez, sending Pedroia to third, and Pedroia being safe at third on a fielder’s choice grounder to Dobbs, who threw home to Paul Hoover, catching Pedroia in a run down, and a throwing error by Hoover, whose throw hit Pedroia, allowing pinch hitter Darnell McDonald to be safe at first, and with one man out, Beltre hits a sacrifice fly, scoring Pedroia. In the meantime, Bosox’s starter Wakefield and his knuckleball kept the Phils off the scoreball through eight innings, as he gave up only five hits and two walks. The Phils finally scored in their half of the ninth as, with a runner on second, and with nobody out, Raul Ibanez hits an RBI double, knocking in Jayson Werth, who had earlier doubled, making it an 8-1 Bosox’s lead. Three batters later, with a man still on base, and now with two men out, pinch hitter Ross Gload hits a two-run pinch hit home run, his second home run of the year, scoring Ibanez, making it 8-3 Bosox. That would be the final score as Ramon Ramirez finally ended the game by getting Shane Victorino to fly out to center.

Roy Halladay took the lost as he went only five and two-thirds innings, giving up seven runs, only six of which were earned, on eight hits and two walks, while striking out only one batter. His record is now 6-3 with a 2.22 ERA. Chad Durbin pitched one and one-third scoreless innings, striking out one. J.C. The Phils (26-17, 1st) after taking yesterday off, start a nine-game road trip with a three-game series against the Mets (22-23, 5th). The game will be played at Citi Field and will start at 7:10 pm Eastern. The Phils will send to the mound Jamie Moyer (5-2, 4.30), who is coming off a lost against the Cubs on May 19, where he went seven strong innings, giving up two runs on four hits and a walk, while striking out seven, in the Phils’ 4-1 lost. He will try to record his sixth win of the season, while hoping to continue the Mets’ present woes. The Mets will send to the mound R.A. Dickey (0-0. 3.00), who is coming off a no-decision against the Nationals on May 19, as he went six innings, giving up two runs on five hits and four walks, while striking out two, in the Mets’ 5-3 lost. He will be trying to add to the Phils’ problems with knuckleballers. The Phils will be trying to start their road trip off with a good series against the Mets.

The Phils avoid being no-hit before they lose to the Bosox, 5-0.

A single by Juan Castro in the bottom of the eight, with two men out, breaks up a no-hit bid by  Daisuke Matsuaka, before the Phils fall to the Bosox, 5-0.

The Bosox took the lead in the fourth as, with two men on base, and with one man out, Jeremy Hermida hits a sacrifice fly, knocking in David Ortiz, who had earlier been safe on a force out, 3-6, wiping out J.D. Drew at second, who had earlier singled, and had gone to third on Adrian Beltre’s double, giving the Red Sox a 1-0 lead. The Bosox then broke it open in the fifth as, with runners on the corners, and with two men out, Drew hits an RBI single, knocking in Marco Scutaro, who had earlier doubled, and had gone to third on Daisuke Matsuaka’s sacrifice bunt, giving the Bosox a 2-0 lead, while sending Jacoby Ellsbury, who had earlier walked, on to second base. One batter later, with still two men out, Ortiz hits an RBI double, knocking in Ellsbury, giving the Bosox a 3-0 lead, while sending Drew on to third. One batter later, and still with two men out, Beltre hits a two-run double, scoring both Drew and Ortiz, making it a 5-0 Bosox lead. That would be all the scoring as Matsuaka would shut down the Phils, not giving up a hit until the bottom of the eighth, when, with two out, Juan Casto got a two out single, breaking up the no-hit bid, before Daniel Bard came in to pitch a 1-2-3 ninth.

Kyle Kendrick took the lost as he last only four and two-thirds innings, giving up five runs on eight hits and two walks, while striking out two. His record is now 2-2 with a 5.66 ERA. The Phils (26-16, 1st NL East) will conclude their interleague series with the Red Sox (23-21, 4th AL East) with an afternoon game, already in progress.

A strong pitching effort by Cole Hamels and two home runs help lead the Phils to a victory over the Red Sox, 5-1.

A strong seven innings, three-hit effort from Cole Hamels and two home runs from Ryan Howard and Jayson Werth help lead the Phils to a victory over the Red Sox, 5-1.

The Red Sox took the lead in the first as, with two men out, Victor Martinez hits a solo home run, his sixth home run of the season, giving the Bosox a 1-0 lead. But, it would be all that the Bosox would be able to get as Phils’ starter Cole Hamels would give up just two more hits, a lead-off single in the third to Darnell McDonald, before he is left stranded on second, and a double to Adrian Beltre, with two outs in the seventh, before he ends the inning by getting Bill Hall to fly out to right. Only one other Bosox would get on base against Hamels, a walk to J.D. Drew in the fourth, while he strikes out eight. Meanwhile, the Phils would tie the game up at one-all in the fourth as Ryan Howard hits a lead-off home run, his eighth home run of the season. Three batters later, with a runner on second, and with one man out, Shane Victorino give the Phils the lead with an RBI single, knocking in Jayson Werth, who had earlier doubled, giving the Phils a 2-1 lead. The Phils would increase their lead in the fifth as, with one man on, and with one man out, Werth hit a two-run bomb to left, his nine home run of the year, scoring Howard, who had earlier walked, making it a 4-1 Phils’ lead. The Phils would add another run in the sixth as, with two men on base, and with two men out, Howard hits an RBI single, knocking in Juan Castro, who was pinch running for Jimmy Rollins, who had earlier singled, as he had reinjured his calf muscle, and had moved up to second on Chase Utley’s single, giving the Phils a 5-1 lead, while sending Utley, who had just singled, up to second base. That would be the final score as J.C. Romero would get out of a bases loaded, two out, jam, by getting pinch hitter David Ortiz to fly out to center for the final out, recording his second save of the season.

Cole Hamels gets the win as he pitches seven strong innings, giving up just one run on three hits and a walk, while striking out eight. His record is now 5-2 with a 3.92 ERA. David Herndon pitches a 1-2-3 eighth, striking out a batter. Danys Baez pitches a third of an inning, giving up a hit and a walk. J.C. Jimmy Rollins, before leaving the game with an injury, Chase Utley, Raul Ibanez, Shane Victorino and Cole Hamels, had the other five Phils’ hits, with Ibanez’s hit being a double and the rest being singles. Victorino knocks in the other Phil run.

The Phils (26-15, 1st NL East) will continue their three-game Interleague Play series with the Red Sox (22-21, 4th AL East) with a night game. The game will be played at Citizens Bank Park and will start at 7:10 pm Eastern. This will be a nationally televised game and will be shown on Fox. The Phils will send to the mound Kyle Kendrick (2-1, 5.24), who is coming off a win against the Pirates on May 17, as he threw eight strong innings, giving up just two runs on five hits and a walk, while striking out four, in the Phil’s 12-2 rout. He will be going for his third straight win, and his second straight good start. The Red Sox will counter with Daisuke Matsuzaka (2-1, 7.89), who is coming off a no-decision against the Yankees on May 17, as he pitched just four and two-thirds innings, giving up seven runs on nine hits and three walks, while striking out three in the Bosox’s 11-9 lost. He will be trying to regain his form. The Phils will be trying to win the series tonight, before handing the ball over to their ace tomorrow afternoon.

The Phils hold on to defeat the Cubs, 5-4.

In a wild game, the Phils hold on in the ninth as Jose Contreras pitches himself out of a two on, two out, jam, to defeat the Cubs, 5-4.

The Phils took a quick 1-0 lead as, with two men out, Chase Utley hits a solo home run, his tenth home run of the season. The Cubs tied the game up at one-all in the fifth as, with a runner on third, and with one man out, Starlin Castro hits an RBI single, scoring Alfonso Soriano, who had earlier doubled, and then went to third on a Mike Fontenot ground out, 3-unassisted. The Phils regained the lead in the sixth as, with two men on, and with two men out, Jimmy Rollins hit a three-run bomb, knocking in Placido Polanco, who had earlier doubled, and Utley, who had just walked, giving the Phils a 4-1 lead. The Cubs then comes back in the seventh as, with nobody out, Derrek Lee hits a lead-off home run, his fifth home run of the year, making it a 4-2 Phils’ lead. Four batters later, with the bases loaded via a walk to Soriano and singles to Fontenot and Castro, and with one man out, pinch hitter Tyler Colvin hits a sacrifice fly, knocking in Soriano, making it a 4-3 Phils’ lead, while sending Fontenot to third. The Cubs then tied it up at four-all in the eighth as, with nobody out, Kosuke Fukudome hits a lead-off home run, his sixth home run of the season. The Phils retook the lead in their half of the eighth as, with two men on, and with two men out, Raul Ibanez hits an RBI single, scoring Utley, who had earlier walked, and had moved up to second on Rollins’ walk, giving the Phils a 5-4 lead, while sending Rollins, who had just walked, over to third. That would be the final score as Jose Contreras would records his second save of the season by pitching himself out of a two on, no outs jam by first striking out Castro and Aramis Ramirez and then by getting Geovany Soto to foul out to first to end the ballgame.

Joe Blanton receives a no-decision as he pitches seven strong innings, giving up three runs on five hits and a walk, while striking out three. Antonio Bastardo is credited with his first blown save as he gives up a home run to the only batter that he would face. Danys Baez picks up the win as he pitches a scoreless inning, striking out a batter. His record is now 2-1 with a 5.00 ERA. Jose Contreras records his second save of the season as he pitches a scoreless inning, giving up a hit and hitting a batter, while striking out two. Ryan Dempster also receives a no-decision as he pitches six innings, giving up four runs on five hits and a walk, while striking out three. James Russell and Jeff Stevens combines for one and a third scoreless inning, giving up a hit (Russell) between them. John Grabow took the lost as he pitches two-thirds of an inning, giving up a run on a hit and two walks. His record is now 0-3 with a 8.44 ERA.

The Phils had seven hits in the game, with Placido Polanco and Raul Ibanez having two hits a piece, with Polanco’s hits being a double and a single, with him scoring a run, while Ibanez’s hits were both singles, with him knocking in a run. Chase Utley, Jimmy Rollins and pinch hitter Ben Francisco having the other three Phils’ hits, with Utley and Rollins’ hits being home runs, Utley’s a solo shot, and Rollins’ a three-run dinger, while Francisco’s hit was a single.

The game will be played at Citizens Bank Park and will start at 7:05 pm Eastern. Jamie Moyer picks up a win in relief as he pitch six shut out innings in relief of Pedro Martinez after a rain delay.

Jamie Moyer picks up his eleventh win of the season after pitching six shut out innings for his first win in relief since pitching in relief for the Red Sox on May 15, 1996, as he took over for Pedro Martinez, who was taken out of the game after pitching only three innings because of a sixty-six minutes rain delay, as the Phils defeat the D-backs, 5-1.

The D-backs took the lead in the first as their lead-off man, Stephen Drew, hits a 3-2 changeup into right field for his eleventh home run of the season, giving the D-backs a 1-0 lead. After Ryan Roberts followed with a single, Pedro Martinez buckled down, and then got the next eight batters out, starting with a double play ball, 1-6-3, off of the bat of Gerardo Parra, wiping out Roberts at second base. The Phillies, meantime, blew opportunities to score runs in the first two innings against D-backs’ starter Jon Garland. Then in the bottom of the third, the rains came down in buckets, delaying the ballgame for sixty-six minutes. When play resumed, the Phillies’ offense went to work. With a man on base, and with two men out, Jayson Werth tied the ballgame up at one-all with an RBI double, knocking in Chase Utley, who had earlier been hit by the pitch. Then two batters later, the Phils took the lead on a Pedro Feliz RBI single, scoring Werth, making it 2-1 Phils, while sending Raul Ibanez, who had earlier been intentionally walked, over to third, before Feliz would move on up to second on D-backs’ left fielder’s Roberts throwing error. Carlos Ruiz then made it 3-1 Phils as he hits an RBI single to right, scoring Ibanez. But, Feliz, who was following Ibanez, was tagged out at the plate, 9-2, for the inning’s final out. In the top of the fourth, the Phils sent out Jamie Moyer in relief of Martinez. After giving up a single to Garland, Moyer would proceed to get out the next eleven batters before giving up another hit. In the meantime, the Phils would add to their lead. In the fifth, the Phils made it 4-1 as, with one out, Werth hits a solo home run, his career high twenty-fifth home run of the year. The Phils then made it 5-1 in the sixth as Carlos Ruiz started the inning off by hitting a solo home run, his sixth home run of the year. That, and later singles to Moyer, his second hit of the night, and to Shane Victorino, with one man out, would lead to Garland’s exit, and his replacement by Daniel Schlereth. Schlereth proceeded to throw a wild pitch that would move Moyer up to third and Victorino up to second base. After Utley is walked to load the bases, Schlereth is able to get out of the inning by first striking out Ryan Howard, and then getting Werth to ground out, 5-3. In the seventh, Moyer would give up his second hit of the night, a two-out single to Miguel Montero. But he then gets out the next seven batters, ending the game as Parra lined out to Werth for the final out, recording the win.

Pedro Martinez received a no-decision, as he pitched only three innings, being taken out after the rain delay, as he gave up only a run on two hits, as he struck out three. Jamie Moyer picked up the win in relief, as he went six strong innings, giving up just two hits, while striking out five. His record is now 11-9 with a 5.22 ERA. Jon Garland took the lost as he pitched five and a third innings, giving up five runs on eleven hits, a hit batter and two walks, as he struck out three. His record is now 6-11 with a 4.42 ERA. David Schlereth, Leo Rosales and Jon Rauch combined for three and two-thirds shut out innings, giving up just one hit (Rauch) and two walks (Schlereth and Rosales with a walk each), while they struck out three (one batter for each pitcher).

The Phils had twelve hits in the game, with Carlos Ruiz leading the way with three hits, one of which was a solo home run, scoring two RBIs, as he raised his batting average to .235. He was followed by Shane Victorino, Jayson Werth, and, of all people, Jamie Moyer, with two hits each, with Werth’s two hits being a double and a solo home run, also knocking in two RBIs. Jimmy Rollins, Chase Utley and Pedro Feliz each followed with a hit, with Feliz knocking in the final Phils’ run. Although scoring several runs last night, the Phils are still having problems scoring runners in scoring position, as they left the bases loaded in both the first and sixth innings.

The Phils (67-49, 1st National League East) continue their short home stand tonight with the Diamondbacks (54-66, 4th National League West) with a night game. The game will be played at Citizens Bank Park and will start at 7:05 pm Eastern. The Phils will send to the mound their new ace Cliff Lee (10-9 (3-0), 2.86 (1.13)), who is coming off a strong start against the Cubs on August 13, as he pitched eight innings, giving up only one run on six hits and three walks, while he struck out eight, in the Phils’ 6-1 win. He will try to make it four straight wins since joining the Phils from the Indians, while giving the Phils a series win at home. The D-backs will try to counter with Dan Haren (12-7, 2.50), who is coming off a win against the Dodgers on August 14, where he went eight innings, giving up a run on six hits and two walks, while striking out eight, in the D-backs’ 4-1 win. He will be trying to see if he can derail the Lee’ Express. The Phils will be trying to give Lee some more run support while Lee will be seeing if he can continue his dominance of National League hitters.
