The Marlins tried to get back into the game in the top of the seventh as they loaded up the bases, via a single by Marcell Ozuna, and walks to Rob Brantley and Adeiny Hechavarria, and with one man out, before Antonio Bastardo ended the threat by first striking out pinch-hitter Austin Kearns, swinging, for the inning’s second out, and then striking out pinch-hitter Matt Diaz, looking, for the inning’s final out. After Mike Adams put down a two-on, one-out threat in the eighth, Jonathan Papelbon came in and recorded his fifth save of the season as he pitched a 1-2-3 ninth.

He is still looking for his first win of 2013. The Phils hope to make it three straight wins against the fish.

The Phils start their home stand with the bats returning as they crush the Marlins, 7-2.

Philadelphia_PhilliesBehind the once again good pitching of Kyle Kendrick, the Phils’ bats once again come alive as they crush the listless Marlins, 7-2.

The Marlins took the lead in the top of the first as, with runners on the corners, and with nobody out, Placido Polanco hits into a 5-4-3 doubleplay, wiping out at second base, for the inning’s first out, Donovan Solano, who had just singled, as he knocked in Juan Pierre, who had started the game off with a walk, moved up to second base on Solano’s single, then stole third base, the 600th steal of his career, giving the Marlins a 1-0 lead. Two batters later, after Brown had moved up to second base on John Mayberry Jr’s ground out, 1-3, and now with one man out, the Phils made it a 6-2 lead as Nix scored on pitcher Tom Koehler’s wild pitch, while Brown would move up to third base. Jon Rauch pitched a scoreless inning, giving up a walk, while striking out a batter. Tom Koehler pitched two innings as he gave up three runs on two hits, two walks and a wild pitch.

The Phils had eight hits in the game, with Dom Brown (2 Singles, Home Run, 2 RBIs) leading the team with three hits, followed by Michael Young (Single, Double) with two. Ryan Howard (Home Run, RBI), Erik Kratz (Single, RBI) and Kyle Kendrick (Single) had the other three Phils’ hits. The other three Phils’ runs came in on a sacrifice fly, a passed ball and a wild pitch. The Phils also had five walks (Howard (2), Laynce Nix (1), John Mayberry, Jr. (1), Kratz (1)) in the ballgame.

The Phils increased their winning streak to three games as they defeat the Marlins in extra-innings, 3-1.

Philadelphia_PhilliesThe Phils reached .500 as they increase their winning streak to three-games as they defeat the last place Marlins, 3-1.

The Phils broke up a o-o tie in the top of the sixth as, with a runner on third, and with two men out, Dom Brown hits an RBI double, knocking in Ryan Howard, who had earlier doubled, then moved up to third base on Michael Young’s ground out, 6-3, giving the Phils a 1-0 lead. The Marlins would tie the game up at one-all in their half of the sixth as, with a runner on second, and with two men out, Placido Polanco hits an RBI single, knocking in Juan Pierre, who had earlier been hit by the pitch, then moved up to second base on Donovan Solano’s ground out, 6-3. The score would stay tie until the top of the tenth as the Phils had a man on first, with two men out, as Chase Utley hits an RBI triple, knocking in Ben Revere, who had earlier singled, giving the Phils a 2-1 lead. The Phils increased their lead two batters later, after Howard is intentionally walked to put runners on first and third, and with still two men out, Young hits an RBI infield single, knocking in Utley, as Marlins’ shortstop Adeiny Hechavarria is unable to force out Howard at second base, giving the Phils a 3-1 lead. That would be the final score as Jonathan Papelbon recorded his second save of the year by pitching a 1-2-3 inning.

The Phils (5-5, 4th) continue their series with the Marlins (1-9, 5th) with a night game tonight. The game will be played at Marlins Park and is to start at 7:10 pm EDT. The Phils will send to the mound their ace Cole Hamels (0-2, 10.97), who is coming off a lost against the Royals on April 7, as he pitched five and two-thirds innings, giving up eight runs on nine hits and four walks, as he struck out only two, in the Phils’ 9-8 lost. Hamels will be going for his first win, as he hopes to regain his grove at the Marlins’ expense. The Marlins plan to counter with Jose Fernandez (0-0, 1.80) as he came off a n0-decision against the Mets on April 7, as he threw five innings, giving up a run on three hits and a walk, while striking out eight, in the Marlins’ 4-3 lost. He will be trying for his first major league victory. The Phils will be trying for their fourth straight win, while hoping that Hamels will finally come out of his present rut.

The Phils will begin a three-games series with the last place Marlins.

Philadelphia_PhilliesThe Phils (4-5, 4th), after leaving Citizens Bank Park with their first series win of 2013, will start a three-games series with the last place Marlins (1-8, 5th), the team with presently the worst record in the National League. The game will be played at Marlins Park and will start at 7:10 EDT.

The Phils will put on the mound their fifth-game starter John Lannan (0-0, 3.86), who is coming off a rather good start against the Royals on April 6, in his first start as a Phil, as he went seven innings, giving up three runs on five hits, while striking out five, holding off the Royals until the Phils were able to make a comeback in the ninth inning to win the game by the score of 4-3. He will be trying to win his first start as a Phil, while trying to lead the club to their first three-game winning streak. The Marlins will counter with Ricky Nolasco (0-1, 3.97), who is making his third start of the season, as he comes off a no-decision against the Mets on April 6, as he went five and a third innings, giving up three runs on six hits and three walks, while striking out three, in the Marlins’ 7-3 lost. He will once again be looking for his first win of the season, while the fish will be looking for their second win of 2013. The Phils will be trying to take advantage of the Marlins’ early season woes, while trying to move up in the NL East standings, while trying to keep from falling any further behind the first place Braves.

After nine games, the Phils have three regulars with a .300 or better batting average, third baseman Michael Young (.375 (12 for 32)), second baseman Chase Utley (.333 (11 for 33)) and shortstop Jimmy Rollins (.316 (12 for 38)), with Utley presently leading the team with nine RBIs and is tied for the team’s lead in home runs with two (tied with Dom Brown) and for the team’s lead in triple with one (along with Young), while Rollins is the team’s leader in doubles with five. Utley and Rollins are tied for second place in stolen bases with three each, both trailing Ben Revere, who presently has four. Rollins is tied for second in RBIs with five with both Ryan Howard and Brown, as they all trail Utley. Rollins, for now, is batting a lot better as the second batter in the Phils’ line-up, looking like the Rollins of 2007-2008, while Utley appears to have gone back to what he was doing before his foot problems of the last two seasons (2011-2012). The biggest disappointment, at the moment, is Howard, who is presently batting (.200 (7 for 35)), despite him showing that he might have finally gotten it during spring training (.322 (28 for 87)), but seems to have gone back to swinging at the junk pitches of breaking balls out of the strike zone and high fastballs, as he have collected only one extra-base hit, a home run, as he has struck out a team leading twelve times. As long as he continue to go after the junk, opposing pitchers will not throw him any good pitches to hit, unless Young start to force them to start pitching to Howard by continuing to hit.

The Phils come back from an early Marlins’ lead to defeat the fish, 9-5.

But, the Phils then gets out of the inning as pinch hitter Austin Kearns strikes out, swinging, for the inning’s second out, but the ball gets away from Ruiz, and Lee attempts to score from third, but Ruiz gets to the ball, and throws to the plate, which was covered by Bastardo, who then tagged out Lee for the inning’s final out, for a strikeout-doubleplay. The Phils got that run back in the ninth as, with a man on third, and with two men out, Kevin Frandsen hits an RBI single, knocking in Darin Ruf, who had earlier doubled, giving the Phils a 9-6 lead. Ramos pitched two-thirds of an inning, giving up a run on two hits and two walks, while striking out a batter. Chad Gaudin pitched a third of an inning, striking out the only batter that he would face. Chris Hatcher pitched an inning, giving up a run on two hits.
