33 games in 31 days: Game #29: The Phils reached the low point as the bullpen melts down in the third as the Phils lose their eighth straight game, 6-3.
After taking a quick lead, the Phils had a five-run meltdown by the bullpen in the third, as the Phils lose their eighth straight game, 6-3.
The Phils took the lead in the second as, with runners on the corners, and with nobody out, Wilson Valdez hits an RBI single, knocking in Ross Gload, who had earlier doubled, then went to third on Brian Schneider’s single, giving the Phils a 1-0 lead, while sending Schneider, who had earlier singled, up to second base. Two batters later, after Joe Blanton had hit into a bunt force out, 1-5, as Schneider is forced out at third base for the inning’s first out, while Valdez would reach second base on the play, while Blanton would be safe at first, the Phils added to their lead as Jimmy Rollins hits an RBI single, scoring Valdez, giving the Phils a 2-0 lead, while sending Blanton up to second base. The Phils then made it a 3-0 lead as, with one man on, and with two men out, Gload hits an RBI double, knocking in Hunter Pence, who had earlier been safe at first on a force out, 1-4, as Chase Utley had earlier reached base on second baseman Justin Turner’s fielding error. The Phils’ then pulled out Blanton before the start of the Mets half of the third, who was doing fine after pitching two scoreless innings, giving up just one hit and started auditioning for bullpen spot(s) on the playoff roster, which turned out to have been a mistake. The Mets cut the Phils’ lead down to 3-2 as, with two men on, and with two men out, Willie Harris hits a deep fly ball to right that Pence was unable to catch, scoring Ruben Tejada, who had reached first base on a fielder’s choice, as Jason Pridie, who had earlier singled, then stole second base, was caught in a rundown before being tagged out, 1-4-5-6-4, before reaching second base during the rundown, and Turner, who had earlier walked, before he reached third base. The Mets then tied the game up at three-all two battters later, after David Wright had walked, putting runners on the corners as Nick Evans hits an RBI double, knocking in Harris, while sending Wright up to third. The Mets then took the lead as, with two men on, and with still two men out, Josh Thole hits a two-run single, scoring both Wright and Evans, giving the Mets a 5-3 lead. The Mets then made it a 6-3 lead in the fourth as, with a runner on third, and with one man out, Tejada hits an RBI single, scoring Pridie, who had earlier hit a ground-rule double, then moved up to third on Dillon Gee’s sacrifice bunt, 2-4. That would be the final score as the Phillies were put down easily in the ninth as Manny Acosta collected his fourth save of the season.
Joe Blanton received a no-decision as he went two shutout innings, giving up just a hit, while he struck out three. David Herndon (1-4, 3.38) took the lost as he pitched two-thirds of an inning, giving up four unearned run on a hit and two walks, while striking out one. Kyle Kendrick pitched an inning and a third, giving up two runs on four hits, while striking out a batter. Michael Schwimer, Michael Stutes and Justin De Fratus combined for four scoreless innings, striking out six batters (two batters each) between them. Dillon Gee (13-6, 4.43) gets the win as he pitched six innings, giving up three runs on nine hits and two walks, while striking out two. Bobby Parnell collected his eleventh hold of the year as he pitched one and two-third scoreless innings, striking out a batter. Daniel Herrera collected his first hold of the season as he pitched a third of an inning, getting out the only man that he would face. Manny Acosta received his fourth save of the year as he pitched a scoreless inning, giving up a hit and a walk.
The Phils had ten hits in the ballgame, with Jimmy Rollins leading the team with three hits, all singles, knocking in a run. Ross Gload followed with two hits, both doubles, knocking in a run. Shane Victorino (Single), Chase Utley (Double), Brian Schneider (Single), Wilson Valdez (Single, RBI) and pinch hitter Erik Kratz (Single) had the other five Phils’ hits.
The Phils (98-60, 1st) will conclude their series with the Mets (76-82, 4th), with a game in progress, with the Phils in complete control.
Sunday: Countdown to the Playoffs, Game # 7: The Mets prevent the Phils from clinching the Eastern Divison flag at home, as the Phils lose, 7-3.
Cole Hamels was not at his best, while also getting no help from the umpire, as the Mets prevent the Phils from clinching the division title at home, as the Phils lose to the Mets, 7-3, while the Braves lose again to the Nationals, cutting the Phils’ magic number down to one game.
The Mets took the lead in the second as David Wright hits a lead-off home run, his twenty-sixth home run of the year, giving the Mets a 1-0 lead. The Mets added to their lead in the fourth as, with the bases loaded, via singles by Angel Pagan and Ike Davis, with Davis’ single sending Pagan to third base, Joaquin Arias being safe at first on a fielder’s choice grounder as Pagan is caught between third and home by Cole Hamels on Arias’ grounder, before being caught in a rundown, and then being tagged out, 1-2-5, while Davis went to third on the play, and a Henry Blanco walk, sending Arias to second, and with two men out, after Mets’ starter Pat Misch struck out swinging, Jose Reyes hits an RBI infield single, which Wilson Valdez threw to second late, after being slow to get it out of his glove, allowing Davis to score, giving the Mets a 2-0 lead, while moving Arias to third base and Blanco to second, with the bases still loaded. The next batter, Nick Evans then hits a two-run double on a ball that Jayson Werth in right was unable to catch and then let get behind him, allowing both Arias and Blanco to score, making it a 4-0 Mets’ lead, before Reyes, who also tried to score on the play, is thrown out at the plate by a strong throw from Shane Victorino, who was backing up the play, 8-2, to finally end the inning. The Mets then made it a 5-0 lead in the fifth as Carlos Beltran hits a solo home run, his sixth home run of the year. The Phils then came back in their half of the fourth as, with two men on, and with two men out, Chase Utley hits a three-run home run, his sixteenth home run of the season, knocking in Valdez, who had earlier singled, and pinch hitter John Mayberry, Jr, who had a pinch hit infield single, moving Valdez up to second base, making it a 5-3 Mets’ lead. The Mets increased their lead in the ninth as, with one man on, and with nobody out, Beltran hits a two-run home run, his second home run of the ballgame and his seventh home run of the year, knocking in Evans, who had earlier singled, giving the Mets a 7-3 lead. That would be the final score as Hisanori Takahashi pitches a scoreless ninth, getting Utley to end the game by flying out to center.
Cole Hamels took the lost as he pitches just four innings, plus a batter, as he gives up five runs on nine hits and three walks, while striking out two. His record is now 12-11 with a 3.09 ERA. David Herndon, Vance Worley, Chad Durbin and Jose Contreras combine for four scoreless innings, giving up one hit (Durbin) and three walks (Herndon, Worley and Durbin one each), while striking out four (Herndon (2), Worley (1), Durbin (1)) between them. Ryan Madson pitches to three batters, giving up two runs on two hits and a walk, getting out none of the batters that he would face. Danys Baez pitches a scoreless inning, striking out two. Pat Misch gets a no-decision as he pitches four and two-thirds innings, giving up three runs on seven hits and a walk, while striking out three. Sean Green pitches a third of an inning, getting out the only man that he would face. Manny Acosta gets the win as he pitches an inning and a third, giving up a hit and a walk. His record is now 3-1 with a 3.12 ERA. Pedro Feliciano records his twenty-first hold as he pitches two-thirds of an inning, getting out both men that he would face. Elmer Dessens receives his tenth hold as he pitches a scoreless inning, giving up a walk. Hisanori Takahashi pitches a scoreless inning, giving up a hit.
The Phils had nine hits in the game, with Raul Ibanez leading the team with two hits, a single and a double. Shane Victorino, Placido Polanco, Chase Utley, Ryan Howard, Jayson Werth, Wilson Valdez and pinch hitter John Mayberry, Jr. had the other seven Phils’ hits, with Victorino, Polanco, Werth, Valdez and Mayberry’s hits being singles, Howard’s hit being a double and Utley’s hit being a three-run home run. The Phils were unable to get a key hit when they needed it.
The Phils (93-63, 1st) would go on the road for the last time during the regular season, to start a series with the Nationals (67-89, 5th) in Washington, looking to clinch the East, as they have already clinched at least a tie for both the Eastern Division and the Wild Card, as the Padres have also lost.
Pat Burrell’s three-run shot in the eight help keep the Phillies in first place as they defeat the D-backs, 6-3.
Pat Burrell’s three-run home run will help keep the Phillies in first place in the East before the All-Star break as the Phillies defeat the Diamondbacks, 6-3. The D-backs would score the game’s first run in the top of the second as Cole Hamels would throw a fastball on a 1-2 pitch that Chad Tracy would hit out of the park for a solo home run, his fifth home run of the season, to give the D-backs a 1-0 lead. The D-backs would increase their lead in the fourth as Hamels would give up a two out RBI single to Robby Hammock, scoring Chris Young, who has gotten on base earlier with a bunt single, and has gone to second on a Chris Burke infield single, to give the D-backs a 2-0 lead. Normally, that would be the ballgame, as the D-backs’ starter, Brendon Webb was getting the Phillies’ batters out with a nasty changeup, which he was throwing in conjunction with his curveball. But, it wouldn’t be so today, as the Phillies would refuse to go down easily. In the fifth, the Phillies would cut the D-backs lead to 2-1, as with one out, Hamels would hit a RBI double, which would score Pedro Feliz, who has earlier singled, all the way from first base as the ball went into the gap in left center field. Hamels would then keep the score at 2-1 as he stopped two attempts by the D-backs to break the game open. In the sixth, after Mark Reynolds would get on base with the only walk that Hamels would give up and then goes to second on Tracy’s single, Hamels would end the threat by first striking out Young and Burke, and then getting Hammock to fly out to right. Then in the seventh, Webb would lead off the inning with a single, and then move to second on Stephen Drew’s single. But, the Phillies would get the first out as Conor Jackson pushes a hard bunt down the third base line that would be picked up by Feliz, who would then touch third base, getting Webb out, but is unable to double up Jackson, while Drew goes to second on the play. The next batter, Orlando Hudson, would then get a single deep to right, which would hit the wall in front of Geoff Jenkins. This would turn out to be good luck for the Phillies, as the D-backs’ third base coach, unable to tell whether Jenkins has caught the ball or not, would stop Drew at third base, which in turn would force Jackson to stop at second, as Chase Utley would relay Jenkins’ throw to catcher Chris Coste. As soon as he has caught it, Coste would see Hudson, who has thought that he was going to get a double on his hit, trapped near second base, since Johnson was still standing on the bag. After looking over at Drew, he threw the ball to Ryan Howard. Howard, while also keeping an eye on Drew, to make sure thst he wouldn’t score during the rundown, forced Hudson back towards second. When Hudson tried to run out of the basepath to keep from being tagged by Howard, he was automatically called out by the umpire, for the second out of the inning, with men on second and third. Hamels would then end the threat by striking out Reynolds for his eighth strike out of the game. In the Phillies’ half of the seventh, with two outs and a man on second, Jimmy Rollins would get a RBI double off of Webb, scoring Carlos Ruiz, who was pinch running for Coste, who has earlier singled, that would tie the game at two all. After Ryan Madson would put down the D-backs in the top of the eighth, the Phillies went to work on the D-backs’ reliever Chad Qualls. Utley would start the inning off with a single to center, then would go to second on Howard’s single to left. With two men on, Qualls would throw a 2-2 slider to Pat Burrell which Burrell would hit to left, into the flower garden, for a three-run homer, for his twenty-third home run of the season, to give the Phillies a 5-2 lead. Two batters later, with one out, Feliz would hit a solo home run, his twelfth home run of the year, to give the Phillies a 6-2 lead. In the ninth inning, with Brad Lidge pitching, Hudson would hit a RBI single, scoring Emilio Bonifacio, who has earlier singled, to make it 6-3 Phillies. But that would be it as Lidge would end the game by striking out Reynolda.
Cole Hamels would get a no-decision, pitching seven innings, as he gives up only two earned runs on eleven scattered hits, while striking out eight D-backs. Ryan Madson would get the win, as he pitched a shut out inning while giving up one hit. His record is now 2-0 with a 2.77 ERA. Brad Lidge would pitch the ninth, giving up an earned run on two hits. Brandon Webb would also get a no-decision as he goes seven innings, giving up two earned runs on seven hits while he struck out six. Chad Qualls would take the lost as he goes only a third of an inning, giving up four earned runs on four hits. His record is now 2-7 with a ERA of 3.89. Connor Robertson would go two-thirds of an inning, giving up no runs on no hits.
With the win, the Phillies will stay in first place in the National League East, no matter what either the Marlins or the Mets will do tonight. The Phillies’ players will now spend the next four days, except for Chase Utley and Brad Lidge who will both be in Yankee Stadium on Tuesday night for the All-Star Game, trying to relax and get refresh, before they play their first series of the second half against the Marlins in Miami on July 18.
The Phillies (52-44), with the win, remain in first place as the 30 major league teams head into the All-Star break. They presently lead the Mets by a game as the Mets prepare to play the Rockies later tonight. The Phillies now lead the Marlins by a game and a half as they lost to the Dodgers. The Braves remain six and a half games behind the Phillies after their win against the Padres today.
Edit: The Phils’ lead over the Mets stay at half as the Mets’ defeated the Rockies with ease. (I need to start drinking more caffeine if I want to avoid making such factual errors late at night.)
