The Phils took the lead in the first as, with one man out, Chase Utley hits a solo home run, his eleventh home run of the year, giving the Phils a 1-0 lead. The Phils increased their lead in the third as, with a man on third, and with one man out, Jimmy Rollins hits an RBI single, knocking in Carlos Ruiz, who had earlier doubled, then went to third on Roy Oswalt’s sacrifice bunt hit, giving the Phils a 2-0 lead, while sending Oswalt, who was safe on his sacrifice bunt attempt, would move up to second base. Two batters later, after Oswalt had moved up to third base on Utley’s fly out to center, and Rollins had stolen second base, and with still one man out, Hunter Pence hits a sacrifice fly, scoring Oswalt, giving the Phils a 3-0 lead. The Phils then took a 4-0 lead in the fourth as, with runners on the corners, and with nobody out, Placido Polanco hits a sacrifice fly, knocking in Shane Victorino, who had earlier singled, then stopped at third on Raul Ibanez’s single. The Phils added to their lead in the fifth as, with one man on, and with one man out, Pence hits a two-run home run, his twenty-second home run of the season, and his eleventh home run as a Phil, knocking in Rollins, who had earlier singled, then reached second base on catcher Brian McCann’s passed ball, giving the Phils a 6-0 lead. The Phils then made it a 7-0 lead in the seventh as, with one man out, Rollins hits a solo home run, his sixteenth home run of the season. The Braves would get on the scoreboard in the ninth as Martin Prado hits a lead-off home run, his thirteenth home run of the year, making it a 7-1 Phils’ lead. But that would be the final score as Kyle Kendrick would get out the next three batters, striking out Freddie Freeman, looking, to end the ballgame.
Roy Oswalt (9-10, 3.69) got the win as he pitched six shutout innings, giving up just three hits and a walk, while striking out four. Joe Savery and Antonio Bastardo combined for two 1-2-3 innings, striking out two batters (one batter each) between them. Kyle Kendrick pitched an inning, giving up a run on a hit, as he struck out a batter. Derek Lowe (9-17, 5.05) took the lost as he pitched four innings, plus a batter, giving up five runs on six hits, while he struck out two. Arodys Vizcaino pitched an inning, giving up a run on a hit, while striking out a batter. Julio Teheran pitched three innings, giving up a run on two hits, while striking out three. Scott Linebrink pitched a scoreless inning, giving up a walk, while striking out a batter.
The Phils had nine hits in the game, with Jimmy Rollins leading the team with three hits, two singles and a home run, knocking in two runs. Chase Utley followed with two hits, a single and a home run, knocking in a run. Hunter Pence (Home Run, 3 RBIs), Shane Victorino (Single), Raul Ibanez (Single) and Carlos Ruiz (Double), had the other four Phils’ hits. Placido Polanco knocked in the other Phils’ run with a sacrifice fly.
The Phils (101-60, 1st) will conclude their regular season as they play the last game of their three-games series with the now desperate Braves (89-72, 2nd). The game will be played at Turner Field and it will start at 7:10 pm EDT. The Phils will send to the mound Joe Blanton (1-2, 5.03), who is coming off a no-decision against the Mets on September 24, as he pitched two scoreless innings, giving up just a hit, while striking out three, in the Phils’ 6-3 lost. He will be trying to pitch his way onto the playoff roster. The Braves will counter with Tim Hudson (16-10, 3.23), who is coming off a win against the Nationals on September 23, as he went five and two-thirds innings, giving up three runs on nine hits, as he struck out four, in the Braves’ 7-4. He will be trying to keep the Braves’ hopes of winning the Wild Card alive. The Phils will be going out to break the team’s franchise record in wins, while trying to add to their present momentum going into the playoffs.
