Happ’s pitching and the Phils’ offense defeat the hapless Astros as the Phils win, 8-0.
Behind the pitching of J.A. Happ and the bullpen, and the relentless bats of the Phils’ offense, the Phils defeat the presently winless Astros, 8-0. The Phils, with their victory, and with losses by both the Braves and the Marlins, took sole possession of 1st place in the NL East.
The Phils took a quick 1-0 lead in the first as, with runners on first and second, and with one man out, Ryan Howard hits an RBI double, knocking in Jimmy Rollins, who has earlier walked, moves up to second on Placido Polanco’s single, and then went to third on a Chase Utley fly out, while sending Polanco, who had earlier singled, over to third base. Two batters later, with runners still on second and third, and now with two outs, Raul Ibanez joins the Phils’ hitting parade with a two-run double, scoring both Polanco and Howard, giving the Phils a 3-0 lead. After being kept from scoring on bases loaded opportunties in both the second and the third innings, the Phils added to their lead in the fourth when, with one man out, Utley hits a solo home run, his first home run of the season, to make it a 4-0 Phils’ lead. Three batters later, with a runner on second, and now with two men outs, Ibanez hits an RBI double, knocking in Howard, who has earlier doubled, making it 5-0 Phils. The Phils continued their scoring in the fifth as, with a runner on second, and once again with two men out, Polanco hits an RBI double, scoring Rollins, who has just doubled, giving the Phils a 6-0 lead. One batter later, the Phils increased their lead to 7-0 as Utley hits an RBI single, knocking in Polanco. As the Phils were scoring, their starter, J.A. Happ, continues where he left off from his rookie season, as he blanks the Astros in six innings, pitching out of trouble, as he gives up only six hits and two walks, while striking out five Astros, followed by the bullpen which pitches four shut out innings, while striking out five more Astros. The Phils add their last run in the seventh as, with runners on first and second, and with one man out, Polanco hits an RBI single, knocking in Carlos Ruiz, who has earlier singled, and has gone to second on a walk to Rollins, while sending Rollins to third, while he would move up to second on the throw, giving the Phils an 8-0 lead. That would be the final score as Jose Contreras pitches a 1-2-3 ninth.

David Herndon, Danys Baez and Jose Contreras combine for four shut out innings, giving up just two hits (Herndon), while striking out five (Herndon (2), Baez (1), Contreras (2)). Bud Norris took the lost as he lasts only two and two-thirds innings, giving up three runs on six hits and four walks, while striking out three. His record is now 0-1 with a 10.13 ERA. Wilton Lopez pitches an inning and a third, giving up two runs on three hits, while striking out one. Brian Moehler pitches three innings, giving up three runs on six hits and a walk, while striking out one. Chris Sampson pitches a scoreless inning, giving up just a hit. Jeff Fulchino also pitches a scoreless inning, striking out a batter.

An eleven hits, eleven runs offensive attack and an eight inning pitching performance by Cliff Lee gives the Phils a two games to one lead in the National League Championship Series, as the Phils crushed the Dodgers, 11-0.
The Phils took a quick 2-0 lead in the first as, with runners on the corners, and with one man out, Ryan Howard hits a two-run triple, knocking in Shane Victornio, who had earlier singled, stole second base, and then moved up to third on Chase Utley’s single, and Utley, who had just singled. The next batter, Jayson Werth, increased the Phils’ lead to 4-0 by hitting a two-run home run, his first home run of the series, knocking in Howard. The Phils then made it 5-0 in the second as, with one man on, and with one man out, Jimmy Rollins hits an RBI double, scoring Carlos Ruiz, who had earlier doubled, and then went to third on Cliff Lee’s sacrifice bunt, 1-4. Three batters later, with the bases loaded, via a walk to Victorino, both Rollins and Victorino then moving up a base on a wild pitch, and then a walk to Utley, Howard hits an RBI ground out, 3-unassisted, bringing in Rollins, to give the Phils a 6-0 lead, while sending Victorino to third and moving Utley up to second base. The Phils would make it 7-0 in the fifth as, with a runner on first, and with two men out, Pedro Feliz hits an RBI triple, knocking in Raul Ibanez, who had just walked. Ruiz then made it an 8-0 Phils’ lead with an RBI single, scoring Feliz. Meanwhile, Lee was throwing a three-hitter against the Dodgers, giving up a pair of lead-off singles to Manny Ramirez, one in the second inning, and the other in the fifth, and a lead-off single to Ronnie Belliard in the seventh, with Belliard being the only Dodgers to reach second base, doing so on a Andre Ethier ground out, 4-3, with nobody out, for the inning’s first out, before Lee would end the inning by striking out both Ramirez and Matt Kemp, swinging, as two of his ten strike outs victims. The Phils added their last runs in the eighth as, with two men on, and with one man out, Victorino hits a three-run home run, his first home run of the series, knocking in Ruiz, who had earlier walked, moved up to second base on Lee’s single, then went to third on Rollins’ ground out, 3-unassisted, and Lee, who had earlier singled, then went to second on Rollins’ ground out, giving the Phils an 11-0 lead. Chad Durbin then came in to pitched the ninth, recording a 1-2-3 inning.

Scott Elbert pitched a third of an inning, walking two batters. Chad Billingsley pitched three and a third innings, giving up two runs on two hits and two walks, while striking out three batters. Cliff Lee pitches a complete game shut out of the Nats as the Phils defeat Washington, 5-0.
Cliff Lee threw his first complete game shut out as a Phil (his second one this season) as the Phils defeat the Nationals, 5-0. The Phils’ magic number is now down to twelve over both the Marlins and the Braves as their lead over the fish remains at seven games.
The Phils jumped to a quick 1-0 lead in the first inning as, with a man on third, and with one man out, Chase Utley hits an RBI single, scoring Jimmy Rollins, who had earlier doubled, and had gone over to third on Shane Victorino’s sacrifice bunt, 2-3. The Phils would then bust the game wide open in the second as, with the bases loaded, via a double by Raul Ibanez, a single by Jayson Werth, which sent Ibanez over to third, and a Pedro Feliz walk, which moved Werth up to second base, and with no outs, Carlos Ruiz hits a three-run double, knocking in Ibanez, Werth and Feliz, giving the Phils a 4-0 lead. And two batters later, after Phils’ starter Cliff Lee flied out to center for the Phils’ first out, Rollins hits an RBI single, scoring Ruiz, making it 5-0 Phils. After Rollins’ hit, the Phils’ offense would get only four more hits on the night. But, it would not matter as Cliff Lee easily handled the Nationals, giving up only six hits and three walks as he pitched a complete game shut out, his first since being traded to the Phils, his second of the season, and the fourth complete game shut out of his career.

Garrett Mock took the lost as he pitched six innings, giving up five runs on seven hits and two walks, while he struck out two. His record is now 3-8 with a 5.89 ERA. Saul Rivera, Ron Villone and Logan Kensing combined for two scoreless innings, giving up only three hits (Rivera (1), Kensing (2)) and a walk (Villone), while they struck out only one batter among them (Kensing).

He will be trying to get back on track as he once again attempt to win his tenth game of the season. The Nats will counter with Livan Hernandez (8-10, 5.30), who is coming off a win against the Phils on September 10, as he pitched seven and a third innings, giving up just two runs on six hits and a walk, while striking out only two, in the Nats’ 8-7 win. He will be trying for his second straight win against the Phils in as many starts. The Phils will be trying to continue their present winning streak while trying to lower their magic number against both the Marlins and the Braves even more.
Happ wins his seventh game as the Phils increased their lead over the Marlins to seven games as the Phils win a shut out, 5-0.
J.A. Happ once again pitch seven strong innings, as he and the bullpen shut down the fish once again as the Phils defeat the Marlins, 5-0. The win increase the Phils lead to seven games in the NL East, while they increase their winning streak to a season high eight games.
The game would start with a very wild first inning. Jimmy Rollins lead off the game with a triple. But, with Shane Victorino batting, and with the infield back, except at third base, Rollins made a mistake by running towards home on Victorino’s grounder, as the ball went to the Marlins’ third baseman Emilio Bonifacio, who then threw home, where Rollins is tagged out by the catcher for the first out of the inning, 5-2, while Victorino would be safe at first on the fielder’s choice. Victorino would then go to second on Braves’ starter Andrew Miller’s throwing error on a pick-off attempt. After Chase Utley flied out to center for the inning’s second out, first Raul Ibanez and then Jayson Werth walked, loading the bases, with two men out. But Pedro Feliz would end the inning by hitting into a force out, 6-5, rubbing out Werth at second base. The Marlins, after dodging the bullet, tried to take the lead in their half of the first. Bonifacio lead off the inning with a double. Jeremy Hermida was then hit by the pitch, putting two men on, with nobody out. Hanley Ramirez then flied out to center for the inning’s first out, as Bonifacio tagged up and moved to third base, putting runners on the corners. Jorge Cantu then flied out to short right field for the second out of the inning, with Bonifacio deciding not to test Werth’s arm. The next batter, Dan Uggla, then ended the inning by grounding out, 6-3, for the final out, leaving it a 0-0 game. The Phils then took the lead in the second, as, with the bases loaded via an infield single to Phils’ starter J.A. Happ, a single to Rollins and an infield single to Victorino, and two men out, Utley is hit by the pitch, forcing in Happ, and giving the Phils a 1-0 lead, as both Rollins and Victorino moved up a base. The next batter, Ibanez, followed with a two-run double, knocking in both Rollins and Victorino, making it a 3-0 Phils lead, while sending Utley to third. The Phils would increase their lead in the third as, with a runner on second, and two men out, Rollins hits an RBI double, knocking in Carlos Ruiz, who had earlier walked, and had moved up to second on Happ’s sacrifice bunt, making it a 4-0 Phillies’ lead. Happ would then keep the Marlins at bay, before running into trouble in the sixth, as the Marlins loaded up the bases on singles by Cantu and Uggla, and a fielding error by Feliz on a Cody Ross ground ball, with nobody out. But Happ soon got himself out of the inning. First, he got Phillies’ killer Ronny Paulino to pop out to shortstop, 6-unassisted, under the Infield Fly Rule for the first out of the inning. He then struck out Brett Carroll swinging for the second out, and then got pinch hitter Wes Helms to strike out looking to end the threat, keeping it a 4-0 Phils’ lead. The Phils would then add to their lead in the ninth as, with the bases loaded again, via an Utley single, a walk to Ibanez and a walk to Feliz, which would move pinch runner John Mayberry, Junior, up to second base, while Utley went to third, and two men out, Utley would score on a wild pitch that would hit Paulino’s shin guard and go up the third base line, making it a 5-0 Phils’ lead. That would be the final score as Scott Eyre and Brad Lidge would combine for a scoreless ninth inning.

Brian Sanches, Burke Badenhop, Luis Ayala and Renyel Pinto would combine for five and a third scoreless innings of relief, giving up only one hit (Sanches) and two walks (Badenhop, Pinto), while striking out seven (Sanches (3), Badenhop (3), Ayala (1)). Dan Meyer pitched a third of an inning, giving up a run on a hit and a walk. Brendan Donnelly pitched two-thirds of an inning, giving up two walks and a wild pitch.

The offense seems to be doing everything right now, while starting pitching, outside of the team’s ace Cole Hamels, seems to be now throwing quality starts, thus giving the bullpen some much needed rest, as the trading deadline draws near.

The game will be played at Citizens Bank Park and will begin tonight at 7:05 pm. The Phils’ starter will be Rodrigo Lopez (1-0, 3.18), who is coming off a no-decision against the Reds on July 8, as he left the game because of injuries, as he gave up two runs on five hits and a walk, while striking out four, in five innings of work, in the Phils’ 3-2 win. He will be going for his second win of the season since returning to the majors. The Cubbies will counter with Ted Lilly (9-6, 3.18), who is coming off a win against the Cardinals on July 11, when he went eight strong innings, giving up a run on four hits and a walk, while striking out four, in the Cubs’ 5-2 win. He will be trying for his tenth win of the season. The Phils will be trying to show that they can continue their present winning ways at home, while improving their record against Central Division teams.

A combine one-hit shut out by Jamie Moyer and the bullpen, and three home runs from Raul Ibanez and Ryan Howard starts off the Phils’ second half with a win, as they defeat the second place Marlins, 4-0. The victory increased the Phils’ lead in the NL East to five games, guaranteeing that they’ll leave Florida with the lead by the time the four-games series is over.
The Phils took the lead in the second as, with one man on, and nobody out, Raul Ibanez hits a two-run home run, his twenty-third home run of the season, scoring Ryan Howard, who had earlier singled, giving the Phils a 2-0 lead. The Phils increased their lead in the fourth as, with one man out, Ibanez hits a solo home run, his second home run of the night, and his twenty-fourth home run of the season, making it a 3-0 Phils’ lead. In the sixth, the Phils made it 4-0 as, with one man out, Ryan Howard launched a solo shot of his own, his twenty-three home run of the season, and the 200th home run of his career, becoming the fastest man to do so as he broke Hall of Famer Ralph Kiner’s old record of doing so in his 706th game, as he hit his in his 658th career game. Meanwhile, Jamie Moyer was having an easy time with the Marlins, only getting into trouble in the Marlins’ fifth, as he gave up a lead-off single to Jorge Cantu, and a one-out walk to Ronny Paulino, moving Cantu to second base. But, he would then get out of the inning by getting Cody Ross to foul out to the catcher, 2-unassisted, for the inning’s second out, and then getting Brett Carroll to hit into a force out, 5-4, wiping out Paulino at second base. The Marlins would never threathen again after that, as Moyer handed the ball over to Ryan Madson, who pitched a 1-2-3 eighth inning, and who in turned handed the ball to J.C. Romero, who pitched a 1-2-3 ninth, preserving both the one-hitter and the shut out.

His record is now 9-6, as he won his 255th career victory, placing him in 41st place on the All-Time Wins List, with a 5.58 ERA. Ryan Madson and J.C. Romero combined for two scoreless innings, as they got out all six men that they would face, striking out one batter (Romero) between them. Chris Volstad took the lost, as he pitched six innings, giving up four runs on seven hits and a walk, while striking out five. His record is now 6-9 with an ERA of 4.53. Luis Ayala, Brendan Donnelly and Kiko Calero all combined for three scoreless innings, as they gave up three hits, (one hit apiece) and one walk (Donnelly), while they struck out five batters (Ayala (1), Donnelly (2), Calero (2)).

The Phils start the second half on a winning note, as they continue to be the best road team in the majors while they increased their winning streak to six games.
The Phillies (49-38, 1st) continue their four-games series with the Marlins (46-45, 2nd) tonight. The game will be played at Land Shark Stadium and will start at 7:10 pm. The Phils starter will be Cole Hamels (5-5, 4.87), who is coming off of a no-decision against the Pirates on July 11, as he pitched six innings, giving up five runs on seven hits, as he struck out six, in the Phils’ dramatic 8-7 come from behind win. He will once again try to show that he is indeed the ace of the Phillies rotation. The Marlins will oppose with Ricky Nolasco (6-7, 5.76), who is coming off a lost against the D-backs on July 10, as he pitched six innings, giving up seven runs on nine hits and a walk, while he struck out eight, in the Marlins’ 8-0 lost. He will be trying to keep the Marlins from trailing the Phils even further in the pennant race. The Phils will be seeing if they can increase their winning streak to seven games while increasing their lead in the NL East to six full games, thus making things easier for them for the rest of the season.
Blanton and the bullpen blanks the Mets as the Phils sweep their major rival in the East, 2-0.
For only the third time at home this season, the Phils have swept a series, doing it for the first time against a team not named the Nationals as they defeated the Mets with a 2-0 win over their ace Johan Santana.
The Phils took the lead in the bottom of the first as, on a 1-0 fastball, Jimmy Rollins hits a lead-off home run into the left field seats, his seventh home run of the year, to give the Phils a 1-0 lead. The game then developed into a pitchers’ duel between Phils’ starter Joe Blanton, who would give up only a single and a walk during his first five innings, while Mets’ starter Johan Santana would give up only one more hit, a single to Rollins, and a walk, after giving up the solo shot to Rollins, in five innings. The Mets then threathen to score in the sixth as they loaded the bases on a walk to Luis Castillo, a single to Santana, moving Castillo up to second base, a sacrfice bunt by Alex Cora, 5-4, moving both runners up a base, and a walk to Daniel Murphy, with only one man out. But Blanton was able to get out of the inning by getting the next batter, David Wright, to hit into a 4-6-3 double play, wiping out Murphy at second, to keep it a 1-0 ballgame. Then, in the Phils’ half of the sixth, with two men out, Chase Utley made it a 2-0 Phils’ lead by hitting an 0-2 fastball into the right field seats for a solo home run, his eighteenth home run of the year. After putting the Mets down in the seventh, although giving up a single, Blanton started off the eighth by giving up a single to Castillo. After striking out pinch hitter Gary Sheffield for the inning’s first out, Charlie Manuel replaces Blanton with J.C. Romero, to face Cora. Sadly, the move did not work as Romero hits Cora with his second pitch, moving Castillo up to second base, putting the tying run on base, with still one man out. Manuel then replaces Romero with Chan Ho Park, to face pinch hitter Fernando Tatis. Park got the job done as he got Tatis to hit into a 4-6-3 double play, the Phils’ third double play of the game, wiping out Cora at second, and keeping it a 2-0 Phils’ lead. In the ninth, Brad Lidge threw his sixteenth save of the season, as he pitched a 1-2-3 inning, striking out the side as he preserves the shut out.
Joe Blanton got the win as he pitched a strong seven and a third innings of shut out ball, giving up just four hits and three walks, while striking out five. His record is now 5-4 with his ERA reduced to 4.69. J.C. Romero pitched to one batter, hitting him. Chan Ho Park recored his fifth hold, as he pitched to one batter, getting a double play ball, as he pitched two-thirds of an inning. Brad Lidge recorded his sixteenth save of the season as he pitched a 1-2-3 inning, striking out the side. Johan Santana took the lost, as he went seven innings, giving up two runs on three hits and two walks, while striking out three. His record is now 9-7 with an ERA of 3.29. Bobby Parnell pitched a scoreless inning, walking a batter, while striking out one.

After a closed club-house meeting after Friday night’s embarrassing lost, the Philles would proceed to unload their Interleague Play frustrations on the Blue Jays with a 10-run outburst while Happ would pitch both his first career complete game and first career shut out as he threw less than 100 pitches in the process, as the Phillies crush the Blue Jays, 10-0.
The Phils took a quick 2-0 lead in the first as, with one man on, and nobody out, Jayson Werth hits a two-run home run, his fourteenth home run of the year, scoring Shane Victorino, who had earlier walked. Four batters later, with a runner on first, and two men out, Pedro Feliz hits a two-run home run of his own, his fourth home run of the year, knocking in Ryan Howard, who had earlier singled, making it a 4-0 Phils’ lead. The Phils would make it 5-0 in the fourth, as, with one man on, and two men out, Carlos Ruiz hits an RBI double, knocking in Chris Coste, who had earlier singled. The Phils then put the game away for good in the fifth, as, with two men on, and nobody out, Howard hits an RBI double, knocking in Werth, who had earlier doubled, giving the Phils a 6-0 lead, while sending Chase Utley, who had earlier walked, over to third. Three batters later, with the bases loaded, after John Mayberry, Jr., is hit by the pitch, sending Howard on to second, and now with one man out, Coste hits an RBI single, scoring Utley, making it a 7-0 Phils’ lead, while moving both Howard and Mayberry up a base. Eric Bruntlett then followed with a sacrifice fly to center for the inning’s second out, scoring Howard, giving the Phils a 9-0 lead. Ruiz would make it 10-0 Phils with an RBI single, scoring Mayberry from second, while sending Coste up to second base. The Phils would score their final run in the sixth, as Werth hits a lead-off home run, his fifteenth home run of the season, his second home run of the game and his eighth career home run against the Blue Jays, making it 10-0 Phils. The Phils threathen to score more runs in both the seventh and eighth innings, but would be turned away by the Blue Jays’ bullpen. Meanwhile, Phils’ starter J.A. Happ would have his way with the Blue Jays’ batters, throwing strikes, and staying out of trouble thanks to a pair of doubleplays, before mowing the Blue Jays’ down, 1-2-3, in the ninth, thus pitching both his first career shut out and first career complete game, and doing with less than 100 pitches.
J.A. Happ got the win as he pitched a complete game shut out, giving up just five hits, as he struck out four. His record is now 5-0 with a 3.00 ERA. Brad Mills took the lost, as he pitched only four innings, plus three batters, giving up eight runs on eight hits and two walks, while striking out seven. His record is now 0-1 with an ERA of 14.09. Shawn Camp pitched an inning in relief, giving up a run on two hits and a hit batter. B.J. Ryan then followed, also pitching an inning, as he also gave up a run on two hits. Brandon League, Dirk Hayhurst and Jesse Carlson then combined to keep the Phils off the scoreboard during the last three innings, giving up just two hits (League (1), Hayhurst (1)) and two walks (Hayhurst), while striking out two (Hayhurst (1), Carlson (1)).

He will be trying for his sixth win of the season, while trying to help the Blue Jays win the series. The Phils will be trying to even things up on their road trip, before going to Atlanta to meet the Braves, while trying to increase their lead over the Mets.

Brett Myers and the bullpen would combine to shut out the Dodgers on thirteen hits as the Phillies would complete their four games sweep of the Dodgers, their first four games sweep of the Bums in Philly since 1929. After Brett Myers and Dodgers’ starter Chad Billingsley are both able to get out of first inning jams, the Phillies would score their first runs in the second inning, as, with two men on and two outs, Jimmy Rollins would hit a two-run single, scoring Jayson Werth, who has gotten on base earlier with a walk, and Pedro Feliz, who has earlier singled, and who would both move up a base on Myers’ sacrifice bunt, to give the Phillies a 2-0 lead. The Phillies would increase their lead in the fifth, as Pat Burrell would hit into a double play, doubling up Chase Utley, who has earlier singled, as Rollins scored on the play, having gotten on base with a double, and moving over to third on Utley’s single, to make it 3-0 Phillies. They would then threathen to score some more runs in the inning by loading up the bases via a walk to Ryan Howard, a single to Shane Victorino and another walk to Werth. But Billingsley would finally end the inning by getting Feliz to ground out. The Dodgers would then threathen to score in the top of the seventh as they loaded up the bases via two singles (Mark Sweeney and Andre Ethier) and a walk (Matt Kemp), with one out. But Myers would get out of the inning by first striking out Jeff Kent, and then getting Manny Ramirez to fly out deep to right. The Phillies would then score their final runs in their half of the seventh, as, with a man on third with one out, Werth would hit a RBI single, scoring Howard, who has earlier doubled and then move to third on Burrell’s ground out to first, to give the Phillies a 4-0 lead. After moving to second base on Feliz’s single, Werth would score all the way from second on Chris Coste’s ground out, second to first, as he kept on running off of the crack of the bat, to make it 5-0 Phillies. That would be the ballgame as J.C. Romero and Clay Condrey would both come in to pitch a pair of scoreless innings, although the Dodgers would threathen to score in both innings.

Chan Ho Park would pitch an inning, giving up two earned runs on three hits. Tanyon Sturtze would pitch a scoreless inning, giving up no hits.
For the third time in the four games series, the offense would end up getting ten hits, with Jimmy Rollins leading the way this time as he is just a hit short of getting the cycle, as he goes 3 for 3 with a single, a double and a triple, along with a walk and also being hit by the pitch, as he also knocks in two runs while scoring one more, as he has his first multi-hit game since the August 9 game against the Pirates. He was followed by Chase Utley and Pedro Feliz who each had two hits, as all of the starters, except for Pat Burrell and Chris Coste, who both took the collar, would have at least one hit. If the Phillies’ offense continues like this in their series with the Mets, the team from New York might soon find themselves once again trailing the Phillies.

In his last start against the Phillies on July 7, he would get the win as he pitches five and one thirds inning, giving up two earned runs on five hits, in the Mets’ 10-9 win. He will be trying to keep the Mets in first place in the East against a resurgent Phillies’ offense.
