The Phils break up a o-o tie in the top of the fifth as, with two men on, and with one man out, Marlon Byrd hits an RBI double, knocking in A.J. Burnett, with had started the inning off with a single, then stopped at second base on Ben Revere’s single, giving the Phils a 1-0 lead, while sending Revere, who had earlier singled, on to third base. The Phils then took a 2-0 lead as Ryan Howard hits a sacrifice fly to left, scoring Revere. The Dodgers would get a run back in their half of the fifth as, with a runner on third, and with one man out, Carl Crawford hits a sacrifice fly, scoring Tim Federowicz, who had started the inning off with a double, then went to third base on Hyun-Jin Ryu’s sacrifice bunt, 1-4, for the inning’s first out, making it a 2-1 Phils’ lead. The Dodgers would tie the game up at two-all in the bottom of the seventh as, with a runner on third, and with two men out, pinch-hitter Justin Turner hits an RBI single, scoring Dee Gordon, who had earlier doubled, then stole third base. The Phils regain the lead in the top of the tenth as, with a runner on second, and with one man out, Dom Brown hits an RBI double, knocking in Carlos Ruiz, who had earlier reached second base on left fielder Crawford’s two-base fielding error, giving the Phils a 3-2 lead. That would end up being the final score as Jonathan Papelbon recorded his sixth save of the season as he pitched a scoreless inning, getting Hanley Ramirez to pop up to the second baseman for the game’s final out.
A.J. Burnett received a no-decision as he pitched six and two-thirds innings, giving up two runs on six hits, a walk and a wild pitch, while he struck out five. Jake Diekman pitched a third of an inning, getting out the only batter whom he would face. Mike Adams pitched a 1-2-3 inning. Antonio Bastardo (3-1, 4.35) got the win as he pitched a scoreless inning, giving up a hit, while striking out two. Jonathan Papelbon collected his sixth save of the season as he pitched a scoreless inning, giving up a hit. Hyun-Jin Ryu also received a no-decision as he went six innings, giving up two runs on nine hits and two walks, while striking out three. Chris Withrow, Brian Wilson and Kenley Jansen combined for three scoreless innings, giving up a hit (Jensen) and hitting a batter (Wilson) between them, while striking out four (Withrow (2), Jensen (2)). J.P. Howell (1-2, 1.00) took the lost as he gave up an unearned run on a hit, while striking out one.
The Phils had eleven hits in the game, with Ben Revere leading the team with four hits, all singles, followed by A.J. Burnett (Singles) with three. Marlon Byrd (Double, RBI), Ryan Howard (Single, RBI), Carlos Ruiz (Single) and Dom Brown (Double, RBI) had the other four Phils’ hits. The Phils also had two walks (Ruiz, Brown), a stolen base (Revere (6)) and a caught stealing (Jayson Nix) in the game.
The Phils (10-10, 4th East) continue their series with the Dodgers (12-9, 1st West) with a game tonight. The game will be played at Dodgers Stadium and is to start at 10:10 pm EDT (7:10 pm PDT). The Phils will send to the mound Cole Hamels (0-0, -.–) who will be making his first start of 2014. He will be trying to help lead the Phils to their fourth straight win, and the series win. The Dodgers will counter with Zack Greinke (3-0, 2.42), who is coming off a no-decision against the D-backs on April 18, as he went six innings, giving up a run on three hits and two walks, while striking out eight, in the Dodgers’ 4-2 extra-innings lost. He will be trying to put a stop to the Dodgers’ current losing streak. The Phils will be trying to give some support to Hamels in his first start of 2014, as well as win the series against the Dodgers.
