The offense waste another good pitching performance, as they Phils lose to the Cards in the ninth, 2-1.
The lack of offense has allowed another good starting performance to go to waste as the Phils lose in the bottom of the ninth to the Cards, 2-1.
The Cards took the lead in the fourth as, with two men on, and with one man out, Yadier Molina hits an RBI single, scoring Lance Berkman, who had earlier walked, then stopped at second base on Allen Craig’s single, beating Dane Sardinha’s bad tag, giving the Cards a 1-0 lead. The Phils would tie the game up at one-all in the eighth as, with runners on the corners, and with one man out, Placido Polanco hits a sacrifice fly, scoring Jimmy Rollins, who was safe at first on second baseman Tyler Greene’s fielding error as he dropped Rollins’ pop up, and then stopped at third on Michael Martinez’s single. The Cards then won the game in the bottom of the ninth as, with the bases loaded, via singles by Ryan Theriot, Jon Jay and Albert Pujols, and with one man out, as Matt Holliday hits into a forced out at the plate on a grounder to short, 6-1, forcing out Theriot, while moving up a base both Jay and Pujols, Berkman hits an RBI single, scoring Jay, giving the Cards a 2-1 walk-off win.
Roy Oswalt received a no-decision as he pitched five strong innings, giving up a run on seven hits and a walk, while striking out three, in his return from the disabled list. Michael Stutes pitched to one batter, throwing three balls, before being taken out of the game because of an injury to his right side. Kyle Kendrick pitched two scoreless innings, giving up a hit and a walk. Antonio Bastardo threw a scoreless innings, giving up a hit and a walk, while striking out two. Danys Baez (1-2, 4.41) took the lost as he pitched a third of an inning, giving up a run on three hits. J.C. Romero pitched to a batter, giving up a hit. Jaime Garcia also received a no-decision as he pitched eight innings, giving up an unearned run on five hits and a walk, while striking out five. Fernando Salas (2-0, 1.02) got the win as he pitched a 1-2-3 inning, striking out a batter.
The Phils had just five hits in the game, with Michael Martinez leading the team with two hits, both singles. Placido Polanco (Single, RBI), John Mayberry, Jr. (Single) and Wilson Valdez (Double), had the other three Phils’ hits, as the offense was once again easily handled by an opposing team’s pitching staff, as they keep being impatient at the plate and swinging at the pitcher’s pitches, not their pitches. What is it going to take to get this bunch to stop making easy outs?!?

The game is to be played at Citizens Bank Park, and is suppose to start at 7:05 pm EDT. The Phils will be sending to the mound Cole Hamels (4-2, 3.19), who will be coming off a no-decision against the Braves on May 13, as he pitched six innings, giving up four runs on eight hits and a walk, while striking out seven, in the Phils’ 5-4 come from behind win. Hamels will be trying to end the Phils’ present losing streak at four game, if the offense would just cooperate and HELP!!! The Rockies will counter with Jorge De Le Rosa (5-1, 3.70), who will be coming off a win against the Padres on May 13, as he went five and two-thirds innings, giving up five runs on nine hits and three walks, while striking out three, in the Rockies’ 12-7 win. He will be going for his sixth win of the season. The Phils will be trying to snap a four game losing streak, if the offense would just concentrate and STOP BEING WILD SWINGERS!!!

The Phils and Astros spent the first five innings in a pitchers’ duel between Phils’ starter Roy Halladay and Astros’ starter Brett Myers, with Halladay giving up only three hits, while he struck out six batters, while Myers would give up just two hits. The Astros finally took the lead in the sixth as, with two men on base, and with one man out, Bill Hall hits an RBI ground out, 4-3, scoring Angel Sanchez, who had earlier singled, then went to third on Hunter Pence’s double, giving the Astros a 1-0 lead, while sending Pence, who had earlier doubled, over to third base. The Astros would increase their lead in the seventh as, with two men on, and with one man out, Michael Bourn hits a two-run triple, knocking in Brett Wallace, who had lead-off the inning with a single, moved up to second base on Humberto Quintero’s single, then went to third on Myers’ sacrifice bunt, 3-4, and Quintero, who had earlier singled, then went to third on Myer’s sac bunt, giving the Astros a 3-0 lead. The Astros then took a 4-0 lead when Sanchez hits a sacrifice fly, scoring Bourn. The Phils then started to come back in their half of the seventh as, with two men on, and with nobody out, Ryan Howard hits a sac fly, scoring Placido Polanco, who had earlier walked, moved up to second base on Jimmy Rollins’ single, then went to third on catcher Quintero’s passed ball, making it a 4-1 Astros’ lead, while sending Rollins, who had earlier singled, then moved up to second base on the pass ball, on to third base. The Phils then made it 4-2 Astros as Raul Ibanez hits an RBI ground out, 3-unassisted, knocking in Rollins. The Phils then went to work in the ninth as, with two men on, and with one man out, Ben Francisco hits an RBI single, scoring Rollins, who had started the rally with a single, then went to second base on Howard’s single, before stealing third with Francisco batting, making it a 4-3 Astros’ lead, while Howard, who had earlier singled, would stop at second base. Then two batters later, after Carlos Ruiz had loaded the bases with a single, moving both Howard and Francisco up a base, and with still one man out, Wilson Valdez hits an RBI single, scoring Howard, tying the game up at four-all, while sending Francisco to third, and Ruiz to second base. One batter later, with the bases still loaded and with one man out, pinch hitter John Mayberry, Jr. hits a ball over the center fielder Bourn’s head for a walk-off RBI single, scoring Francisco, to give the Phils a 5-4 walk-off win.

The Pirates took a 1-0 lead in the third as, with runners on the corners, and with one man out, Corey Wimberly hits into an RBI ground out, 6-3, knocking in Josh Rodriguez, who had earlier singled, then moved up to second base on Pedro Ciriaco’s single, then stopped at third on Brad Lincoln’s force out, 5-4, forcing out Ciriaco at second base, while sending Lincoln, who had just hit into a force out, up to second base. The Pirates then made it 2-0 as, with a runner on second and now with two men out, John Bowker hits into an RBI double, knocking in Lincoln. The Phils cut the Pirates’ lead in their half of the third as, with a runner on third, and with two men out, Shane Victorino hits an RBI double, knocking in Michael Martinez, who had earlier walked, moved up to second on Roy Oswalt’s sacrifice bunt, 3-4, then went to third on Jimmy Rollins’ ground out, 1-unassisted, making it a 2-1 Pirates’ lead. The Phils would win the game in the ninth as, with runners on second and third, and with two-men out, Tuffy Gosewisch hits a two-run single off of Josh Harrison’s glove, knocking in Pete Orr, who had earlier reached base on a bunt single to first, was safe at second on a force out of Erik Kratz’s grounder, 5-unassisted as Ben Francisco, who had reached base on a bunt single, ran out of the base path, then stopped at second on Orr’s bunt single, and stopped at third on Martinez’s ground out, 4-3, and Kratz’s who was safe at first as Francisco was out at third as he went out of the base line to try and avoid the tag, and then stopped at second on Martinez’s ground out, giving the Phils a 3-2 win.

The Phils made it 2-0 in the sixth as Raul Ibanez hits a lead-off home run, his ninth home run of the season. The D-backs would cut the Phils’ lead in half in the seventh as, with one man out, Miguel Montero hits a solo home run, his third home run of the year, making it a 2-1 Phils’ lead. The D-backs would tie the game up at two-all in the ninth as, with runners on the corners, and with nobody out, Montero hits an RBI ground out, 6-3, knocking in Justin Upton, who had earlier doubled, and had gone to third on Adam LaRoche’s single, while sending LaRoche, who had just singled, up to second base, before being replaced by pinch runner Rusty Ryal. The D-backs then tried to take the lead as they loaded the bases, via a Mark Reynolds intentional walk, and a walk to Stephen Drew, moving up both Ryal and Reynolds, and with still one man out, but are stopped as Gerardo Parra hits into a 4-6-3 double play, wiping out Drew at second, to end the inning, before Parra is thrown out of the game for throwing him helmet in frustration. The Phils won the game in the eleventh as, with two men on, and with one man out, Wilson Valdez hits an RBI single, scoring Ransom, who had earlier walked, and had gone on to second on Ruiz’s single, as the throw to the plate hits the mound, slowing it up, giving the Phils’ a walk-off 3-2 win.

The Nationals will counter with Craig Stammen (2-4, 5.50), who is coming off a no-decison against the Brewers on July 23, as he pitched five innings, giving up three runs on five hits and a walk, while striking out three, in the Nats’ 7-5 lost. In his last three starts, his record is 0-1 with two no-decisions, as he pitched sixteen and a third innings, giving up eight runs on seventeen hits and six walks, while he had struck out eleven. He will be trying to hand the Phils’ their first lost in nine games. The Phils’ will be trying to extend their winning streak to nine games at the expense of the Nats, while hoping to shrink the Braves’ lead in the East to a game and a half.

In a very close game that started out as a pitchers’ duel between a shut out (Roy Halladay) and a no-hit bid (Travis Wood), the game ended as an extra-inning Phils win as Jimmy Rollins hits a two out single in the bottom of the eleventh to defeat the Reds for their third straight extra-inning walk-off win, 1-0. The three straight walk-off wins have occurred for the first time in the club’s history.
For the first seven innings the game developed into a classic pitchers’ duel between veteran Roy Halladay and rookie Travis Wood, in which Halladay would give up three hits and a walk, helped by two doubleplays, as he struck out six, whle Wood got out the first twenty-one men that he would face, thanks mostly to the batters chasing his high fastball, as he struck out eight batters. In the eight, the Reds threathen to take the lead as Miguel Cairo got on base with a lead-off double off of Ryan Howard’s glove. The next batter, Drew Stubbs moved Cairo up to third base on a sacrifice bunt, 5-4, for the first out. But Halladay got out of the inning by getting strike outs numbers seven and eight by getting Ryan Hanigan swinging for out number two and then Travis Wood swinging for the final out. After Wood set down batters twenty-two to twenty-four in the Phils’ half of the eighth, Halladay also put down the Reds in the top of the ninth, striking out victim number nine, although giving up his fifth and final hit of the game. In the Phils’ half of the ninth, Carlos Ruiz broke up Wood’s no-hit bid with a lead-off double to center. The next batter, pinch hitter Wilson Valdez then messes up a bunt attempt by popping up to the third baseman for the first out. The following hitter, pinch hitter Raul Ibanez flied out to center field for the inning’s second out, sending Ruiz to third, which might have won the game if Valdez had done his job. Jimmy Rollins then ended the inning by popping out to the first baseman, sending the game into extra-innings for the third straight game. The Reds then tried to take the lead against Brad Lidge in the tenth as Jay Bruce started the inning off with a lead-off double. Cairo followed with a sacrifice bunt, 1-4, sending Bruce on to third with one man out. After Lidge had walked Stubbs to put runners on the corners, Stubbs then stole second base to put runners on second and third, with one man out. Hanigan then followed by striking out swinging for out number two. The next batter, pinch hitter Laynce Nix is then intentionally walked to load up the bases, bringing up Brandon Phillips, who then flied out to center to end the inning. The Phils then went down in the tenth, making no real threat against first Nick Masset, then Bill Bray, although getting one hit in the inning. In the top of the eleventh, Jose Contreras puts down the Reds 1-2-3, striking out two batters. Then in the Phils’ half of the eleventh, they made their second major threat of the game as, after Cody Ransom strikes out for the inning’s first out, Ruiz hit his second double of the ballgame, this time to left. Valdez is then intentionally walked to put two men on with one out. Pinch hitter Ross Gload then flies out to right for the inning’s second out. Bray is then replaced on the mound by Logan Ondrusek, to face Rollins. On an 1-0 fastball, Rollins hits it near the right field line, scoring Ruiz from second, winning the game 1-0, on a walk-off single.
