The Blue Jays added to their lead in the third as, with two men on, and with two men out, Thames hits an RBI single, scoring Yunel Escobar, who had earlier walked, then reached second base on Placido Polanco’s fielding error of Encarnacio’s grounder, giving the Blue Jays a 3-0 lead, while sending Encarnacion, who was earlier safe at first on Polanco’s error, up to second base. The Phils got a run back in the fourth as, with a man on third, and with one man out, Hunter Pence hits an RBI single, scoring Polanco, who had earlier doubled, making it a 3-1 Blue Jays’ lead. Two batters later, after Laynce Nix is safe at first on a fielder’s choice force out, 3-2-6, as Pierre is tagged out, before moving up to second base on the rundown, the Phils’ took a 2-0 lead as John Mayberry, Jr. hits an RBI single, scoring Nix. The Phils then made it a 3-0 lead in the second as, with no one out, Pete Orr hits a lead-off home run, his first home run of the spring. Freddy Galvis then followed with a solo home run of his own, his second home run of the spring, giving the Phils a 4-0 lead. Two batters later, now with runners on the corners, as Escobar moved up to third on Omar Vizquel’s single, and with still one man out, Jose Bautista hits an RBI ground out, 5-3, scoring Escobar, giving the Blue Jays a 2-1 lead, while sending Vizquel up to second base. The Pirates then took a 2-0 lead in the third as, with two men on, and with one man out, Casey McGehee hits an RBI ground out, 5-3, scoring Marte, who had earlier singled, stopped at second base on Clint Barmes’ single, then went to third on Cliff Lee’s wild pitch, while sending Barmes, who had earlier singled, then stopped at second base on Lee’s wild pitch, would move up to third base. The Pirates then made it a 3-0 lead in the fifth as pinch hitter Jake Fox hits a solo home run. The Phils finally get on the board in the ninth as, with the bases loaded, via Hector Luna being hit by a pitch, then moving up to second on Lou Montanez’s grounder before going on to third on third baseman Matt Pogue’s force attempt throwing error, Montanez reaching first base on Pogue’s error, and a walk to Tuffy Gosewisch, sending Montanez up to second base, and with one man out, Kevin Frandsen hits a sacrifice fly, scoring Luna, making it a 3-1 Pirates’ lead. while sending Montanez on to third. Justin Wilson, Kyle McPherson and Daniel Moskos all received their first hold of the spring as they combined for three scoreless innings, giving up three hits (McPherson (1), Moskos (2)) and a walk (Wilson) between them, while striking out one (Wilson). Bryan Morris recorded his first save of the spring as he pitched an inning, giving up two runs on a hit, a walk and a hit batter, while striking out one.

The Tigers would get a run back in the ninth as, with a man on second, and with nobody out, Patterson hits an RBI single, knocking in Quintin Berry, who had just doubled, cutting the Phils’ lead to 7-5. But, that would be the final score as Brian Sanches ended the game by getting Argenis Diaz to field out to center for the final out.

Roy Halladay received a no-decision as he went three innings, giving up three runs on four hits, while striking out four. Joel Pineiro pitched two innings, giving up a run on two hits, striking out a batter. Jeremy Horst (1-0, 0.00) picked up the win as he pitched an inning and two-thirds of shutout ball, giving up two hits, while striking out a batter. David Herndon picked up his first hold of the spring as he pitched an inning and a third of scoreless ball, giving up two hits and a walk. Brian Sanches recorded his first save of the spring as he pitched an inning, giving up a run on two hits, while striking out a batter. Max Scherzer also received a no-decision as he pitched three and one-third innings, giving up a hit and two walks, while striking out two batters. Adam Wilk recorded his second hold of the spring as he went two and a third innings, giving up three runs on four hits. Tyler Stohr recorded his first hold of the spring as he pitched a third of an inning, getting out the only man that he would face. David Pauley (1-1, 16.88) blew his first save attempt of the spring before taking the lost, as he pitched two-thirds of an inning, giving up four runs on five hits and two walks. Collin Balester pitched an inning and a third, giving up a hit. Daniel Schlereth pitched a scoreless inning, striking out a batter.

The Phils had eleven hits in the ballgame, with Lou Montanez leading the team with two hits (Singles, RBI). Juan Pierre (Single), Scott Podsednik (Single), John Mayberry, Jr. (Double, RBI), Hunter Pence (Single), Laynce Nix (Single), Carlos Ruiz (Home Run, 3 RBI), Kevin Frandsen (Single, RBI), Freddy Galvis (Single) and Michael Martinez (Single) had the other nine Phils’ hit. The Astros took an early 1-0 lead in the first as, with two men on, and with one man out, J.D. Martinez hits an RBI ground out, 6-3, knocking in Jordan Schafer, who had started the game off with a single, stopped at second base on Jose Altuve’s single, then went to third on Vance Worley’s wild pitch. The Astros increased their lead in the second as, with runners on the corners, and with one man out, Jason Castro hits an RBI single, scoring Jed Lowrie, who had earlier walked, then went to third on Brett Wallace’s single, giving the Astros a 2-0 lead, while sending Wallace, who had just singled, up to second base. The Astros then made it a 3-0 lead in the fourth as, with two men on, and with one man out, Schafer hits an RBI double, knocking in Wallace, who was earlier safe on a force out, 3-6, wiping out at second base Matt Downs, who had earlier singled, then moved up to second base on Castro’s single, while sending Castro, who had just singled, on to third. Two batters later, with two men still on, and now with two men out, the Astros busted the game open as Brian Bogusevic reached base on a throwing error by third baseman Kevin Frandsen, allowing Castro to score, making it a 4-0 Astros’ lead, before Schafer scored, after first stopping at third base, to make it 5-0 Astros.  The Astros then made it a 6-0 lead as, after Bogusevic had stole second base, Martinez brought him home as he hits an RBI double. The Astros added to their lead in the sixth as, with a man on second, and with one man out, Martinez hits an RBI double, his second of the game, scoring Marwin Gonzalez, who had earlier walked, then moved up to second base on pinch hitter Brandon Barnes’ ground out, 3-unassisted, giving the Astros a 7-0 lead. Four batters later, with the bases loaded, via a walk to Brian Bixler, and a single to Jonathan Singleton, moving both runners up a base, and with two men out, pinch hitter Diory Hernandez hits a two-run single, knocking in Martinez and Bixler, giving the Astros a 9-0 lead, while sending Singleton up to second base. The Astros then made it a 10-0 lead as pinch hitter Carlos Corporan hits an RBI single, scoring Singleton, while sending Hernandez up to second base. The Phils finally got on the scoreboard in the eighth as, with runners on second and third, and with tw0 men out, Lou Montanez hits a two-run double, knocking in Freddy Galvis, who had earlier walked, then stopped at third base on Scott Podsednik’s double, and Podsednik. who had just doubled, cutting the Astros’ lead down to 10-2. The Phils then made it a 10-3 Astros’ lead in the ninth as Hector Luna hits a lead-off home run, his first home run of the spring. But that would be the final score as Jose Valdez ended the game by getting Sebastian Valle to fly out to left for the final out.

Pat Misch pitched two innings, giving up four runs, only one of which was earned, on five hits and a walk, while striking out a batter. Jonathan Papelbon pitched a scoreless inning, giving up a hit and a walk, while striking out two. Dontrelle Willis pitched two and a third innings, giving up four runs on three hits and two walks. B.J. Rosenberg pitched an inning and a third, giving up a hit while striking out two. Chad Qualls and Michael Stutes pitched two scoreless innings, giving up a walk (Qualls), while striking out a batter (Stutes) between them. Bud Norris (1-0, 0.00) got the win as he pitched three scoreless innings, walking a batter.  Kyle Weiland, Lance Pendleton and Jorge De Leon combined for four scoreless innings, giving up two hits (Weiland) and two walks (Weiland (1), Pendleton (1)) between them, while strking out three  (Weiland (2), Pendleton (1)). Fernando Rodriguez pitched an inning, giving up a run on two hits and a walk, while striking out two. Jose Valdez pitched an inning, giving up a run on a hit.

The Phils had only five hits in the game, a single by Shane Victorino, a double by Scott Podsednik, a two-run double by Lou Montanez, a home run by Hector Luna and a single by Erik Kratz. The Phils also had four walks, as the offense was kept under control by Astros’ pitching.

The Phils’ (2-3) next game, another home game at Bright House Field, will be an afternoon game with the Pirates (2-2) tomorrow afternoon. The game will start at 1:05 pm EDT.

Spring Training: Phils drop their second straight game to the Yanks, 7-4.

The Phils lost their second spring training game, losing once more to the Yanks, 7.4.

The Phils started the game off by taking the lead in the first inning as, with a runner on second, and with one man out, Hunter Pence hits a two-run home run, his second home run of the spring, scoring Scott Podsednik, who had earlier singled, then stole second base, giving the Phils a 2-0 lead. The Yankees got a run back in their half of the first as, with two men out, Alex Rodriguez hits a solo home run, his first home run of the spring, making it a 2-1 Phils’ lead. The Yanks then tied the game up at two-all in the third as, with the bases loaded, via singles by Robinson Cano and Rodriguez, with Cano stopping at second base, a 6-5 force out by Mark Teixeira, wiping out Cano at third, because the ball that had originally headed towards left field had been blown back by the wind to drop in front of shortstop Freddy Galvis, with Rodriguez stopping at second base on the play and Texieira reaching first, and Andruw Jones being hit by a pitch, moving both Rodriguez and Texieira up a base, and with two men out, Francisco Cervelli walked, forcing in Rodriguez, while sending Texieira up to third base, and moving Jones on to second base. The Yankees took the lead in the fourth as, with one man on, and with two men out, Justin Maxwell, who had earlier reached first base on a fielding error by third baseman Ty Wigginton, then went up to second base on a 4-3 ground out by Derek Jeter, scored on a fielding error by Michael Martinez on a Cano grounder, giving the Yanks a 3-2 lead. The Yanks then made it a 4-2 lead as Rodriguez hits an RBI double, knocking in Cano. The Phils cut the lead down to 4-3 in the sixth as, with a man on second, and with two men out, Galvis hits an RBI double, knocking in Martinez, who had just doubled. The Yanks got the run back in the seventh as, with one man on, and with nobody out, Jose Gil hits an RBI double, knocking in Corban Joseph, who had reached base on a Dom Brown fielding error, stopping at second base, making it a 5-3 Yanks’ lead. Two batters later, with a runner on third, as Gil had moved on to third base on a Phillippe Aumont wild pitch, and with one man out, the Yanks made it a 6-3 lead as JR Murphy hits an RBI single, knocking in Gil. Two batters later, after Zoilo Almote had sent Murphy to third with a single, and with two men out, the Yanks made it a 7-3 lead as pinch hitter Jayson Nix hits an RBI single, scoring Murphy, while sending Almonte on to third. The Phils got a run back in the eighth as, with a runner on third, and with one man out, Hector Luna hits an RBI ground out, 4-3, knocking in Lou Martinez, who had earlier hit a ground-rule double, then went to third on Dom Brown’s ground out, 3-1, making it a 7-4 Yanks’ lead. Mitchell (1-0, 0.00) got the win as he pitched two scoreless innings, giving up two hits and a walk. Boone Logan recorded his first hold of the spring as he pitched a scoreless inning, giving up a hit, while he struck out two. Cory Wade received his first hold of the spring as he pitched an inning, giving up a run on two hits, striking out a batter. Clay Rapada recorded his first hold of the spring as he pitched a 1-2-3 inning, striking out a batter. Kevin Whelan pitched an inning, giving up a run on one hit, while striking out a batter. Chase Whitley recorded his first save of the spring as he pitched a scoreless inning, giving up two hits, while striking out a batter.

The Phils had twelve hits in the game, with Dom Brown (Single, Triple) and Freddy Galvis (Single, Double, RBI) leading the team with two hits each. 2011 National League Divisional Series, Game #4: The Phils are unable to clinch in St. Louis as they lose to the Cards, 5-3.

The Phils once again allow an early lead to slip away as they lose to the Cards, 5-3, forcing a game 7 in Philadelphia.

The Phils took the lead in the first as, with one man on, and with nobody out, Chase Utley hits an RBI triple, scoring Jimmy Rollins, who had started the game off with a ground-rule double, giving the Phils a 1-0 lead. The Phils then took a 2-0 lead as Hunter Pence hits an RBI single, knocking in Utley. The Phils then ran themselves out of a big inning as Ryan Howard struck out, looking, on a 3-2 slider, before Pence is thrown out trying to steal second base by Yadier Molina, although replays would show that he was actually safe. The Cards then got a run back in their half of the first as, with one man on, and with two men out, Lance Berkman hits an RBI double, knocking in Skip Schumaker, who had earlier singled, on a ball that had hit the wall, and was well played by center fielder Shane Victorino, who then, as he was getting ready to throw it in, slipped and lost control of the baseball, which then headed back towards the wall, which allowed Schumaker to score, making it a 2-1 Phils’ lead, while allowing Berkman to reach third base on Victorino’s throwing error. The Cards took the lead in the fourth as, with runners on the corners, and with one man out, David Freese hits a two-run double, knocking in Matt Holliday, who had walked, moved up to second base when Berkman was hit by a pitch, then went to third on Molina’s line out to right, and Berkman, who had earlier been hit by a pitch from Roy Oswalt, giving the Cards a 3-2 lead. The Cards then took a 5-2 lead in the sixth as, with one man on, and with two men out, Freese hits a two-run home run, his first home run of the series, knocking in Holliday, who had earlier singled. The Phils got a run back in the eighth as, with runners on the corners, and with one man out, Michael Martinez, who was pinch running for pinch hitter Ross Gload, who had gotten on base with a single, before going to third on Utley’s single, would score on Fernando Salas’ wild pitch, making it a 5-3 Cards’ lead, while sending Utley, who had just singled, up to second base. But that would be the ballgame as Jason Motte would collect his second save of the series as he pitched a 1-2-3 ninth.

Roy Oswalt (0-1, 7.50) took the lost as went six innings, giving up five runs on six hits and a walk, while striking out five. Joe Blanton and Brad Lidge combined for two 1-2-3 innings, striking out a batter (Lidge) between them. Edwin Jackson (1-0, 3.00) got the win as he pitched six inning, giving up two runs on five hits and a walk, while striking out four. Arthur Rhodes collected his second hold of the series as he pitched a third of an inning, striking out the only man that he would face. Octavio Dotel collected his first hold of the series as he pitched two-thirds of an inning, getting out both men that he would face. Fernando Salas collected his first hold of the series as he pitched two-thirds of an inning, giving up a run on two hits and a wild pitch. Marc Rzepcynski received his second hold of the series, as he pitched a third of an inning, getting out the only man that he would face. Jason Motte recorded his second save of the series as he pitched a 1-2-3 ninth, striking out a batter.

The Phils had five hits in the ballgame, with Jimmy Rollins (Single, Double) and Chase Utley (Single, Triple, RBI), both leading the team with twe hits each. Hunter Pence (RBI), Placido Polanco and pinch hitter Ross Gload had the other three Phils’ hits, all singles, as the offense continue to tail off after the first three batters, especially Ryan Howard, who, in a post-game interview, admitted he is being a bit antsy at the plate. The final Phil run came in on a wild pitch.

The Phils and Cards will play the fifth and deciding game of the series on Friday night in Philadelphia. The game will be played at Citizens Bank Park and will start at 8:37 pm EDT. The Phils will send to the mound their ace Roy Halladay (1-0, 3.38), who is coming off a win in the first game of the series on October 1, as he went eight innings, giving up three runs on three hits and a walk, while striking out eight, in the Phils’ 11-6 rout. Halladay will be trying to continue his post-season dominance, while trying to give the Phils the best chance to clinch at home. The Cards will counter with Chris Carpenter (0-0, 12.00), who is coming off a no-decision in the second game of the series on October 2, as he pitched only three innings, giving up four runs on five hits and three walks, while striking out only two, in the Cards’ 5-4 win. He will be trying to improve on his previous start. The Phils are expecting a strong performance from Doc Halladay, while seeing if they can not only jump on Carpenter, but this time pour it on like they did in game one of the series, to avoid another disappointing post-season.
