The Phils start their series with the Mets on a losing note, losing 4-1.

The Mets took the lead in the top of the second as, with the bases loaded via a lead-off bunt single by Lucas Duda, a single by Chris Young, moving Duda up to second base and an infield single by Wilmer Flores, moving up both runners, and with nobody out, Travis d’Arnaud hits into a 6-4-3 double play, wiping Flores out at second base for the inning’s first out, scoring Duda, giving the Mets a 1-0 lead, while sending Young up to third base. The Mets then took a 3-0 lead in the top of the fourth as, with one man on, and with one man out, Young hits a two-run home run, his fourth home run of the season, knocking in Curtis Granderson, who has started the inning off with a walk. The Mets then added to their lead in the top of the fifth as, with the bases loaded, via a lead-off single Zack Wheeler, a force attempt error by third baseman Cesar Hernandez on Juan Lagares’ gounder, which allowed Wheeler to safely reach second base, while Lagares would be safe at first, and a fielder choice’s grounder by David Wright to third baseman Hernandez, which would end up with Wheeler and Lagares both moving up a base, while Wright would be safe at first, and with one man out, Granderson would force in a run with a walk, forcing in Wheeler, giving the Mets a 4-0 lead, while both runners would move up a base. The Phils would finally get on the scoreboard in the bottom of the seventh as, with one man out, Marlon Byrd would hit a solo home run, his seventh home run of the season, making it a 4-1 Mets’ lead. That would end up being the final score as Jenrry Mejia collected his fifth save of the season by throwing a 1-2-3 ninth, as he struck out the side.

David Buchanan (1-1, 3.86) took the lost as he pitched six and two-thirds inning, giving up four runs, three of which were earned, on seven hits and two walks, while striking out two. Mario Hollands pitched an inning and a third, giving up a walk, while striking out three. Justin De Fratus pitched a third of an inning, giving up a hit. Antonio Bastardo pitched two-thirds of an inning, giving up a walk. Zack Wheeler (2-5, 4.31) got the win as he went six and a third innings, giving up a run on four hits, while striking out nine. Scott Rice received his sixth hold of the year as he pitched a third of an inning, getting out the only man that he would face. Vic Black collected his first hold of the year as he pitched one and a third scoreless innings, striking out three. Jenrry Mejia received his fifth save of the season as he threw a 1-2-3 inning, striking out three.

The Phils had only four hits in the game, a single by Ben Revere, a solo home run by Marlon Byrd (RBI), a double by Carlos Ruiz and a single by Cesar Hernandez. The Phils had a stolen base (Revere (14)) in the game, while the defense committed an error (Hernandez (2)) and performed two double plays.

The Phils (23-28, 5th) continue their series with the Mets (25-28, 4th) with a night game tonight. The game will be played at Citizens Bank Park and will start at 7:o5 pm EDT. The Phils will send to the mound A.J. Burnett (3-4, 3.71), who is coming off a lost to the Dodgers on May 25, as he went seven innings, giving up six runs, four of which were earned, on eleven hits and a walk, while striking out three, in the Phils’ 6-0 lost. He will be trying to even up his record. The Mets will counter with Rafeal Montero (0-2, 4.96), who is coming of a no-decision against the D-backs on May 25, as he went six innings, giving up a run on two hits and three walks, while striking out ten, in the Mets’ 2-1 lost. He will be trying for his first win of 2o14. The Phils will be trying to get back on the winning track tonight.
