The Phillies come out on top in a slugfest with the Cardinals, take control of first place in the NL East.
The Phillies’ offensive help the team outlast a determined Cardinals’ offense as the Phils defeat the Redbirds, 10-7. The Phils take over control of first place in the National League East as they head to New York City for their first meeting with their rivals, the Mets, in the Mets’ new home of Citi Field.
The Phillies took a quick 1-0 lead in the first, as, with one out, Shane Victorino hits a solo home run, his fourth home run of the season. In the third, the Phillies increased their lead, as, with runners on second and third, and nobody out, Victorino hits an RBI single, scoring Phils’ starter Brett Myers, who had earlier singled, and had gone to third on Jimmy Rollins’ double, and Rollins, who had earlier doubled, giving the Phils a 3-0 lead. Later, with the bases loaded, via a single to Raul Ibanez, which had sent Victorino over to third base, and a walk to Ryan Howard, which would move Ibanez up to second, and still nobody out, the Phils would make it 4-0 Phils as Jayson Werth hits into a sacrifice-double play, which would score Victorino from third base, while Ibanez was thrown out at second base, 8-4, as he midjudged the play, thinking that the ball would fall in for a base hit, instead of being caught by centerfielder Colby Rasmus, for the inning’s second out. A rare baserunning mistake by Ibanez since becoming a Phil. The Cards would get a run back in their half of the third, as, with runners on second and third, and one man out, Joe Thurston hits into an RBI ground out, 6-1, for the inning’s second out, knocking in Tyler Greene, who had earlier doubled, and had gone over to third on Skip Schumaker’s single, making it a 4-1 Phillies’ lead, while sending Schumaker, who had gone up to second base on Victorino’s throw home, as the ball goes past the cut off man, would move on to third. In the fourth, the Cardinals made it 4-2 Phils as Rudy Ludwick hits a lead-off solo home run, his seventh home run of the season. Two batters later, with one man out, Yadier Molina made it a 4-3 Phils’ lead as he hits a solo home run of his own, his third home run of the year. The Phillies then increased their lead in the fifth, as, with runners on the corners, and two men out, Werth hits a three-run home run, his fourth home run of the year, and his second home run of the series, scoring Rollins, who had earlier singled, and had gone on to third on Victorino’s single, who would later be picked off first, trying to steal second base, 1-3, for the inning’s first out, and Howard, who had earlier walked, giving the Phillies a 7-3 lead. The Cardinals got a run back in their half of the fifth, as, with a runner on second, and two men out, Ludwick hits an RBI single, knocking in Thurston, who had earlier doubled, cutting the Phillies’ lead to 7-4. In the sixth, with the bases loaded, via a single to Molina, Rasmus being hit by a pitch, and a single to Cardinals’ starter Adam Wainwright, with one man out, pinch hitter Khalil Greene would hit a sacrifice fly, scoring Molina from third, making it a 7-5 Phils’ lead, while sending Rasmus over to third base. In the seventh, the Phillies would make it 8-5 Phils, as, with two men on, and one man out, Howard would hit an RBI single, scoring Victorino, who had earlier singled, and had moved up to second after Ibanez was hit by a pitch, while sending Ibanez over to third base. Two batters later, after Werth was hit by a pitch to load the bases, sending Howard up to second base, Pedro Feliz hits an RBI single, scoring Ibanez, giving the Phils a 9-5 lead, while moving both Howard and Werth up a base, leaving the bases loaded. The Cardinals would get a run back, as, with two men on, and two outs, Rasmus hits an RBI double, scoring Chris Duncan, who had earlier walked and had gone on to second on Molina’s walk, making it 9-6 Phils, while sending Molina, who had earlier walked, over to third. In the ninth, the Phils added an insurance run, making it a 10-6 lead, as with a runner on first, and two men out, Feliz hits an RBI double, knocking in Werth, who was earlier safe at first on a fielder’s choice ground ball, as Ibanez, who had earlier hit a ground rule double and had reached third base on Howard’s ground out, 3-1, was cut down at home plate on a ball hit to the pitcher, Brad Thompson, who threw home to the catcher, Molina, who blocked home plate and then tagged out Ibanez, who had taken off on the crack of the bat. The Cardinals make it a 10-7 game in the bottom of the ninth, as Albert Pujols hits a lead-off home run, his tenth home run of the year, and his only hit in the series. But, that would be it, as Brad Lidge would end the game by getting out the next three batters.
Brett Myers would get the win as he pitched five and a third innings, giving up five runs on nine hits and two hit batters, while striking out one. His record is now 2-2 with a 5.35 ERA. Scott Eyre pitched two-thirds of an inning, as he recorded his third hold of the year, giving up no runs or hits. Clay Condrey pitched two-thirds of an inning, giving up a run on one hit and two walks, while striking out a batter. Ryan Madson recorded his fourth hold of the season, as he went an inning and a third, giving up no runs. Brad Lidge pitched an inning, giving up a run on one hit, while striking out a batter. Adam Wainwright took the lost, as he pitched six innings, giving up seven runs on nine hits and two walks, while striking out five. His record is now 3-1 with an ERA of 4.08. Denny Reyes pitched a third of an inning, giving up two runs on two hits and a hit batter, while striking out a batter. Chris Perez pitched a scoreless inning, giving up two hits and hitting a batter. Jason Motte pitched two-thirds of an inning, striking out a batter. Brad Thompson pitched an inning, giving up a run on two hits.
The Phillies collected fifteen hits in the game, with Shane Victorino leading the way with four hits, just one hit short of the cycle, as he had two singles, a double and a home run, knocking in three runs, and scoring three, as he raised his batting average to .308. Jimmy Rollins, Raul Ibanez and Pedro Feliz all followed with two hits apiece. Ryan Howard, Jayson Werth, Miguel Cairo, Carlos Ruiz and Brett Myers got the Phils’ other five hits. Besides the Victorino’s three RBIs, Werth lead the team with four RBIs, Feliz knocked in two runs and Howard knocked in one.
The Phillies (14-10, 1st) continue their four-games road trip with a short two-games series with their main rival in the NL East, the Mets (12-13, 3rd). The first game will be played at the Mets new home, Citi Field, with a start time of 7:10 pm Eastern. The Phils’ starter will be Chan Ho Park (0-1, 8.57), who is coming off an earlier beating at the hands of these same Mets on May 1, where he was only able to pitch four and two-thirds innings, giving up seven runs on eight hits and six walks, while striking out only one batter, in the Phillies’ 7-4 lost. Park is still looking for his first win as a Phil, while folks are wondering how many more chances the Phils will give him before putting him into the bullpen. The Mets will counter with their ace Johan Santana (3-1, 1.10), who is coming off of a no-decision against the Marlins on April 29, as the Mets’ bullpen once again let him down. Santana went seven strong innings, giving up only two runs on five hits and three walks, while striking out seven, in the Mets’ 4-3 lost. He will be looking for his fourth win of the year as he hopes to once again dominate the Phils. The Phillies will be looking to come out of New York with at least a split, before coming home for a three-games set with the Braves.
Phillies rally late, hang on to beat the Cardinals, 5-4.
Brett Myers pitches his second straight strong outing, while the Phillies rally late to score four runs in the eight to take the lead, then they would hang on to win, as the Phillies defeat the Cardinals, 5-4. With the win, they would increase their lead in the East to two and a half games as the Marlins lose to the Rockies. The Cardinals would score the first run in the second, as Troy Glaus would hit a RBI single, scoring Ryan Ludwick, who has doubled earlier, to give the Cardinals a 1-0 lead. The Cardinals would increase their lead to 2-0 when Ludwick would hit a solo home run in the fourth, his twenty-seventh home run of the year. The Phillies would cut the Cardinals’ lead to 2-1 in the sixth, as Chase Utley would hit a solo home run of his own, his twenty-eighth home run of the year. The Phillies would finally light up the Cardinals’ bullpen in the top of the eighth. With one out, and Kyle McClellan pitching, Jayson Werth would get on base with a single. McClellan would be replaced by Jaime Garcia. He would get Utley to hit into a force out, first to the shortstop, wiping out Werth at second for the second out. Ryan Howard would follow him with a single, sending Utley to second. Garcia is then replaced by Russ Springer. The Phillies would then go to work. Pat Burrell would greet Spriger with a single, scoring Utley and sending Ryan to second to make it 3-2 Cardinals. Shane Victornio would then take Garcia deep with a three-run home run, his tenth home run of the year, to give the Phillies a 5-2 lead. Greg Dobbs would then ground out to end the inning. The Cardinals then try to rally back in their half of the eighth. With one out, Brendan Ryan, who has gotten on base earlier with a pinch hit single, moved to second on a J.C. Romero’s balk, and then went to third on a ground out, would score on a Howard’s fielding error of pinch hitter Nick Stavinoha’s grounder, making it a 5-3 Phillies’ lead. After Romero hits Joe Mather with a pitch to put runners on first and second, he is replaced by Ryan Madson. Madson would then proceed to walk Albert Pujols to load the bases. With Ludwick now batting, Madson would get him to hit into a 5-4-3 double play to end the inning, the third one that the Phillies would get in as many innings. In the ninth, the Phillies would give the ball to Brad Lidge to get the save. The first batter he would face, Glaus, would greet him with a solo shot to left for his nineteenth home run of the year, to cut the lead down to 5-4. After getting Yadier Molina to fly out, the next three Cardinals would get on base with a single (Aaron Miles), a pinch hit single (Rick Ankiel) and a hit batter (Cesar Izturis) to load the bases, with Joel Pineiro pinch running for Ankiel. But Lidge would then buckle down and strike out Stavinoha and Mather to end the game as he records his twenty-eighth save.
Brett Myers would get a no-decision as he pitches his second straight quality start as he goes six innings, giving up only two earned runs on four hits. Chad Durbin would get the win as he pitch an inning plus a batter, as he gives up an earned run on two hits. His record is now 4-2 with a ERA of 1.77. J.C. Romero would pitch a third of an inning, giving up no runs on no hit and a hit batter. Ryan Madson would go two-thirds of an inning, giving up no runs on no hits and a walk. Brad Lidge would record his twenty-eighth save in as many tries, as he gives up an earned run on three hits and a hit batter, while striking out two. Todd Wellemeyer would also get a no-decision, as he goes six innings plus a batter, giving up an earned run on four hits. Ron Villone would pitch a third of an inning, giving up no runs on no hits. Kyle McClellan would pitch an inning, giving up an earned run on a hit. Jaime Garcia would receive the lost, as he goes a third of an inning, giving up an earned run on a hit. His record is now 0-1 with a ERA of 4.00. Russ Springer would commit his second blown save, as he goes a third of an inning, giving up two earned runs on two hits. Ryan Franklin would pitch a scoreless inning, giving up no hit.
The Phillies’ offense is once again unable to unload on a Cardinals’ starter as Todd Wellemeyer would only give them four hits, although one would be a home run. But they would finally light up on the Cardinals’ weak bullpen, scoring four of their runs in an one inning outburst. In turn, their own bullpen would bend, but refused to break, when the Cardinals tried to regain the lead in the eight and win it in the ninth. It seems to me that it is now more important than ever that they get some help in the bullpen as long as Tom Gordon (who has just perform a minor league rehab stint) and Rudy Seanez (just placed on the DL) are both out. Yo, idiots, unloosen the purse strings, and get some help for the bullpen.
With tomorrow off, the Phillies (61-50) come back home to Philly with a two and a half games lead in the East as the Marlins lose to the Rockies. The Mets now trail by three games as they lost to the Astros. The Braves still trail by ten games as they defeated the Brewers. The Phillies, after coming home from a 5-1 road trip, will try to deliver an early one-two punch to the Marlins as the fish come in to Philadelphia for a three games series starting on Tuesday night.
Cole Hamels is once again denied his tenth win of the year, this time hurt by the long ball.
Cole Hamels is once again denied his tenth victory of the year as he gives up two home runs, which would account for four of the five runs that he would give up, as the Cardinals defeat the Phillies, 6-3. The Cardinals would take control of the game in the third, when, with two men on and nobody out, Joe Mather would hit a three-run home run, his fifth home run of the year, scoring Skip Schumaker, who has earlier singled, and Cesar Izturis, who has walked earlier, to give the Cardinals a 3-0 lead. Four batters later, Yadier Molina would hit a sacrifice fly, scoring Ryan Ludwick, who has earlier singled, moved to second on Eric Bruntlett’s throwing error, and has moved to third on Troy Glaus’ single, to give the Cardinals a 4-0 lead. The Cardinals would increase their lead to 5-0 in the fifth when Ludwick would hit a solo home run off of Cole Hamels, his twenty-fourth home run of the year. The Phillies would finally get to Kyle Lohse in the sixth. Shane Victorino would start the inning off with a double. Chase Utley would follow with a RBI double, scoring Victornio, to make it 5-1 Cardinals. After Ryan Howard strikes out, Pat Burrell would hit a two-run home run, his twenty-seventh home run of the year, scoring Utley, making it 5-3 Cardinals. After giving up a double to Geoff Jenkins, Lohse would be taken out of the game for Russ Springer. Springer would then proceed to get Bruntlett to strike out and Carlos Ruiz to ground out, short to first, to end the inning. In the eighth, the Cardinals would increase their lead as Ludwick would hit his second solo home run of the night, his twenty-fifth home run of the year, to make it 6-3 Cardinals. The Phillies would threathen to tie the game in the ninth. With runners on second and third and two outs, Jason Isringhausen would get Victorino to ground out, second to first, to end the game, as he records his twelfth save of the year.
Cole Hamels would get the lost as he is once again denied his tenth win, thanks in part to him throwing several high fastballs in the third inning, one of which would eventually leave the park. He would go sixth innings, giving up five runs, four of which were earned, on six hits. His record is now 9-7 with a 3.37 ERA. Ryan Madson would pitch two innings, giving up an earned run on two hits. Karl Lohse would get the win, going five and a third innings, as he gave up three earned runs on five hits. His record is now 13-3 with a 3.73 ERA. Russ Springer would pitch two-thirds of an inning, getting out both men whom he would face. Jaime Garcia would pitch one and two-thirds inning, giving up no runs on no hits. Jason Isringhausen would go one and a third innings, giving up no runs on no hits as he records his twelfth save.
Karl Lohse would keep the Phillies’ offense quiet until the sixth inning, when they would finally score some runs off of him, but it would end up not being enough as the Phillies would fail to light up the Cardinals’ bullpen, as the Phillies’ five games winning streak ends. Hopefully this will only lead to a reverse of what happen in the previous series played here back in June, when the Phillies started the series with a blow out and then counldn’t do anything afterwards; maybe this time the Phillies will be able to do something about the Cardinals’ pitching and score some runs. Guess we’ll only find out during the next two games.
The Phillies (59-50) will continue their three games set with the Cardinals (62-50, 2nd-T National League Central) with a night game from Busch Stadium. The game will begin at 7:15 pm Eastern (6:15 pm Central). The Phillies will be sending to the mound Joe Blanton (5-12, 5.13), who is coming off a no-decision against the Braves on July 27, when he would only pitch two innings because of the two hours plus rain delay, giving up two earned runs on three hits, in the Phillies’ 12-10 win. This will be the first time that Blanton will face the Cardinals, which hopefully will be to Blanton’s advantage. Blanton will be trying for his first victory as a Phil as he makes his third start since being traded to the Phillies. The Cardinals’ starter will be Branden Looper (10-4, 4.38), who is coming off a win against the Braves on July 28, as he went seven innings, giving up only two earned runs on seven hits, in the Cardinals’ 12-3 win. He has already faced the Phillies once this year back on July 10, where he would go six innings, giving up four earned runs on seven hits, in the Cardinals’ 4-1 lost. Looper will be trying to improve his record while seeing if he can do better than he did the first time against the Phils.
The Phillies are still leading the Mets by a game as they lost to the Astros. The Marlins are still trailing the Phillies by a game and a half as the Rockies defeat them. The Braves still trail the Phillies by nine games as they lost to the Brewers. The Phillies will once again be trying to increase their lead in the East before going home to meet the Marlins this coming Tuesday.
Phillies win series with the Cardinals as Ryan Howard hits two home runs to defeat the redbirds, 4-1.
Jamie Moyer pitched seven strong innings as Ryan Howard belted two home runs, taking the major league lead from Chase Utley in the process, as the Phillies defeated the Cardinals, 4-1, to take the series. The Phillies have won their first series at home since they’d took three games out of four from the Reds back on June 2-5. The Phillies took the lead in the bottom of the first as Ryan Howard hit a two-run home run off of Cardinals’ starter, Braden Looper, his now major league leading twenty-sixth home run of the year, scoring Shane Victorino who has earlier singled, giving the Phillies a quick 2-0 lead. They would increase their lead to 3-0 in the third as Chase Utley hit a RBI double, scoring Jimmy Rollins, who has earlier doubled. The Cardinals would get a run back in the fourth, as Yadier Molina singles in Troy Glaus, who has earlier doubled, making it 3-1 Phillies. The Phillies would get that run back as Howard would hit his major league leading twenty-seventh home run of the year, a solo shot, to give the Phillies a 4-1 lead. But that would turn out to be it as Jamie Moyer would pitch seven strong innings, getting the Cardinals to hit into three double plays while striking out four. Ryan Madson and J.C. Romero would together pitch two scoreless frames, with Romero snuffing a threat in the ninth inning, to record his first save of the year.
Jamie Moyer will get the win, going seven innings, giving up only one earned run on seven hits. His record is now 8-6 with a 3.95 ERA. Ryan Madson would pitch one and a third innings of relief, giving up no runs on one hit. J.C. Romero would get his first save of the year as he pitches two-thirds of an inning, giving up no runs on no hits. Braden Looper will get the lose, as he pitches six innings, giving up four earned runs on seven hits. His record is now 9-7 with a 4.25 ERA. Russ Springer would pitch a third of an inning, giving up no runs on two hits. Ron Villone woild go two-thirds of an inning, giving up no runs on no hits. Chris Perez would pitch an inning, giving up no runs on no hits.
The Phillies’ offense was able to put up some runs on the scoreboard, thanks to Ryan Howard’s two home runs, and Chase Utley’s RBI double with a man in scoring position. Hopefully, this will mean that the bats are finally awake and are now waiting to do some damage on their next opponent, the presently not so dominating Diamondbacks. Meanwhile, the veteran Jamie Moyer continues to impress as he shuts down the Cardinals, giving up only seven scattered hits, while getting three double play balls behind him to help keep the redbirds from being able to do any damage.
The Phillies (50-43) will conclude their ten games home stand with a three games set against the Diamondbacks (45-46, 1st-T National League West). The game will be played at Citizens Bank Park and will start at 7:05 pm Eastern. The Phillies will send to the mound Kyle Kendrick (8-3, 4.39), who is coming off a no-decision against the Mets on July 6, as he pitched his third straight quality start as he gave up only one earned run on eight scattered hits, in the Phillies’ 4-2 lost. He’ll be for the second time trying for his ninth win of the season, and his fourth straight quality start, while hoping to throw another quality start against the D-backs as he did back on May 7, where he went six innings, giving up only three earned runs on ten hits while receiving a no-decision, in the Phillies’ 5-4 win. The D-backs will send to the mound Doug Davis (3-4, 3.74), who is coming off a lost against the Padres on July 5, where he went eight innings, giving up three earned runs on seven hits, in the Diamonbacks’ 4-2 lost. Lifetime against the Phillies he is 2-1 with a 2.92 ERA in six starts. He will be trying to even his record, while trying to keep the D-backs in first place with the Dodgers.
The Phillies’ lead is still one and a half games over the Mets as the Mets win their game with the Giants. The Phillies are at the moment leading the Marlins by two games, as the fish prepare to start a four games series with the Dodgers in Los Angeles. The Phillies have increased their lead over the Braves to six and a half game, as the Braves have an off-day today. The Phillies hope to extend their winning streak while trying to increase their lead in the East before the start of the All-Star break.
